Strengthening post-exposure prophylaxis uptake among survivors of sexual violence through immediate access at police stations in Nigeria's Federal Capital Territory.

INTRODUCTION: Data on sexual violence (SV) prevalence in Nigeria is limited; however, 2014 data indicate that 24.8% of females aged 18-24 years experienced SV in childhood and only 3.5% received any form of services. Initiation of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to prevent HIV acquisition following SV is most effective when started immediately and is not recommended after 72 hours. Police stations are often entry points for survivors; however, lengthy processes may result in delays and missed PEP opportunities. Using an ongoing phased approach, we introduced PEP into selected police stations i…

Evaluation of decriminalizing small amounts of illicit drugs in Victoria, BC: A seasonally adjusted interrupted time-series analysis of police data.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, British Columbia (BC), Canada implemented a three-year pilot policy to decriminalize personal possession of a cumulative total of 2.5 g or less of opioids, cocaine, methamphetamine, and MDMA. Under this exemption, individuals found within the threshold are not subject to criminal charges, though possession above 2.5 g, possession in excluded locations (e.g., schools, airports), and trafficking remain criminal offences. This study evaluates the impact of this policy on police-reported drug-related offences, charges, and seizures in Victoria, BC. METHODS: Interrupted time-s…

Indirect Associations Between Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms and Other Psychiatric Symptoms, Alcohol Use, and Well-being via Psychological Flexibility Among Police Officers.

Police officers experience a high number of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) often associated with elevated posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). In addition, PTSS are related to co-occurring psychiatric symptoms (e.g., anxiety, depression), alcohol misuse, and low perceived well-being. Yet, behavioral processes that may account for the associations between PTSS and unfavorable outcomes remain unspecified. Psychological flexibility, or one's response to private experiences (e.g., PTE-related memories) with an open, aware, and active approach, may be one such process. The present study aimed…

Using the double diamond framework to co-create and evaluate '1TeamActive': A physical activity and well-being intervention for police workers and their families.

Police work can be stressful, negatively affecting well-being and familial relationships. But, the influence of family-based interventions on such outcomes is unknown. Using co-creation, we employed the 'Double Diamond' framework in four British police forces to develop, deliver and evaluate '1TeamActive' - a physical activity intervention for police workers and their families. Multiple stakeholders (Team Police UK, Sport England, four UK police forces, police workers and families) participated in four longitudinal research phases. In Phase 1, literature reviews 'Discovered' the stress impacts…

'I can see that it's bad for them': third party judgements about the effect of procedural injustice on mental health and relationships with the police.

OBJECTIVES: Explore why people react so strongly to procedural injustice experienced by others. One possibility is that people recognise the marginalisation and psychological harm that injustice can cause. METHODS: An online experiment tested whether exposure to procedurally unjust police behaviour directed at crime victims would influence participants' assessments of the subject's marginalisation, mental health outcomes, and their overall perceptions of the police (N = 300). RESULTS: Exposure to procedurally unjust police behaviour led to more negative evaluations of its psychological impac…

Gomastahs, Peons, Police and Chowdranies: The Role of Indian Subordinate in the Functioning of the Lock Hospitals and the Indian Contagious Diseases Act, 1805 to 1889.

Recent scholarship on the social history of health and medicine in colonial India has moved beyond enclavist or hegemonic aspects of imperial medicine and has rather focused on the role of Indian intermediaries and the fractured nature of colonial hegemony. Drawing inspiration from this scholarship, the article highlights the significance of the Indian subordinates in the lock hospital system in the nineteenth century Madras Presidency. This study focuses on a class of Indian subordinates called the "gomastah", who were employed to detect clandestine prostitution in Madras to control the sprea
