Several bacterial and viral agents have been implicated in the pathogenesis of the Guillain-Barré syndrome, an acquired immune-mediated disorder. A case of Guillain-Barré syndrome associated with acute Q fever is described. Coxiella burnetii should therefore be added to the list of microorganisms capable of inducing the Guillain-Barré syndrome.

We present a second case in which Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) appeared simultaneously, both in acute and fulminant form. The patient, a 10-year-old girl, presented with acute onset of coma and flaccid, are-flexic quadriparesis. The elevated CSF protein levels and delayed F waves fulfilled the criteria of GBS and an MRI study revealed extensive multifocal demyelination compatible with a diagnosis of ADEM. Prompt clinical response followed by complete recovery was achieved by treatment with corticosteroids. It is suggested that acute severe combi

We describe a young woman with complications of a primary varicella-zoster infection. She was admitted with varicella pneumonitis and developed the syndrome of Guillain-Barré. At admission she also had a myocardial infarction. We stress the lack of symptoms of pulmonary disease and the various neurological complications in varicella infection at older ages. We discuss the possible relationship between varicella infection and myocardial infection.

Mononeuritis multiplex and acute demyelinating polyneuropathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome) are well known in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Chronic acquired demyelinating polyneuropathy has been reported rarely in SLE. Two young women had monophasic progressive weakness, areflexia, elevated CSF protein, and slow nerve conduction velocities as the first manifestation of SLE. Sural nerve biopsy in one patient revealed mild loss of myelinated fibers and an increased number of thinly myelinated fibers. Steroid therapy led to improvement in both patients. These patients demonstrate that chronic d

A 71-year-old man developed a facial diplegia following right ophthalmic zoster. Neurological examination also revealed loss of reflexes in the lower limbs with increase of CSF protein. Unusual cases of the Ramsay Hunt syndrome and Guillain-Barré syndrome seen with herpes zoster were reviewed. These cases including our case may suggest that the bilateral involvement or its wider spread throughtout nervous tissue can rarely occur in the Ramsay Hunt syndrome and its subgroups.

The autoimmune peripheral neuropathies with prominent motor manifestations are a diverse collection of unusual peripheral neuropathies that are appreciated in vast clinical settings. This chapter highlights the most common immune-mediated, motor predominant neuropathies excluding acute, and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP and CIDP, respectively). Other acquired demyelinating neuropathies such as distal CIDP and multifocal motor neuropathy will be covered. Additionally, the radiculoplexus neuropathies, resulting from microvasculitis-induced injury to nerve roots,…

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated acute polyradiculoneuropathy and commonly occurs after a preceding infection or immunization sequalae. Following the severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus-2 virus pandemic with co-introduction of massive vaccinations, several GBS cases associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection per se or after vaccination for COVID-19 were reported internationally. Herein, we report two cases of Korean GBS presenting with tetraplegia after two different COVID-19 vaccinations (42-year old man by AstraZeneca and 48-year woman by Pfize…

BACKGROUND: Miller Fisher syndrome, a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome, is an acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy that may occur weeks after a bacterial or viral infection. Campylobacter jejuni and Haemophilus influenzae are frequently reported etiological agents.
PATIENT DESCRIPTION: We describe a boy with Miller Fisher syndrome following Epstein-002DBarr virus primary infectious mononucleosis. He presented with bilateral dysfunction of several cranial nerves and hyporeflexia of the limbs but without ataxia. Miller Fisher syndrome was confirmed by the presence of anti-G…

Identification of CD59 p.Cys89Tyr mutation in 5 patients from North-African Jewish origin presenting with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy like disease and chronic hemolysis, led us to reinvestigate an unsolved disease in 2 siblings from the same origin who died 17 years ago. The two patients carried the same CD59 gene mutation previously described by our group. These children had quiet similar disease course but in addition developed devastating recurrent brain infarctions, retinal and optic nerve involvement. Revising the brain autopsy of one of these patients confir…

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an acute, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy, with several clinical variants including the acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN) subtype. AMAN often presents with rapid motor weakness, respiratory compromise, and may follow antecedent infections. We report a rare and severe case of AMAN in a 25-year-old female presenting with rapidly progressive quadriplegia and type II respiratory failure. She required prolonged mechanical ventilation, developed multiple hospital-acquired infections, and experienced infusion-related adverse reactions to intravenous immunogl…

We describe an unusual case of clinical amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with initial neurophysiological studies suggesting demyelination, along with neuroimaging findings that helped to support the eventual diagnosis. An otherwise well 68-year-old man had 8 weeks of left upper limb weakness. On examination, there were widespread lower and upper motor neurone findings suggesting ALS. However, nerve conduction studies identified sensorimotor demyelinating changes suggesting chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP), a diagnosis further supported by cerebrospinal fluid …
