Echinococcosis is a disease that has been affecting human beings since decades and is primarily a zoonotic disease. The larvae of genus Echinococcus causes this disease. The most common sites for these cysts are the lungs and liver. Cardiac hydatidosis is a rare phenomenon and the incidence of such cases is about 1.3%. The case presented is of a 15- year-old boy who would have shortness of breath on exertion and acute right leg pain. To diagnose cardiac variant of the cystic disease, computed topography (CT) and echocardiography were done. Doppler studies confirmed acute limb ischemia. The tre

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the prevalence of popliteal cysts in patients studied with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Cyst presence and volume will be related to other internal derangement of the knee.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three hundred and eighty-two consecutive patients with a MR study of the knee were included. Images were obtained in the three spatial orthogonal planes and evaluated through consensus. Four categories were established for the Baker cyst and synovial fluid (absence, minimum, moderate and massive), and the presence of meniscal, cruciate ligaments and cartilage …

We report the case of a 68-year-old man with right intermittent claudication by adventitial cystic disease. We performed resection of the cyst and affected popliteal artery with interposing an autologous vein graft. Intraoperative findings revealed an intimal tear between the cyst and the compressed artery. His symptoms resolved after surgery, and the postoperative course was uneventful. Although adventitial cystic disease with intimal tear is rare, we consider that conventional surgical intervention remains the favorable treatment option for adventitial cystic disease. <Learning objective: We

Cystic adventitial disease of the popliteal artery is an uncommon vascular condition that can manifest as intermittent claudication, particularly in active individuals without typical atherosclerotic risk factors. We report the case of a 50-year-old male presenting with a 2-year history of progressive right leg pain, triggered by prolonged walking and knee flexion, yet notably absent during cycling activities. Clinical examination revealed diminished distal pulses in the right leg. A Doppler-based treadmill test indicated a significant post-exercise drop in ankle pressures on the right side. U

Peroneal nerve entrapment is most common in the popliteal fossa, but is rarely caused by a ganglion. Although ganglionic cysts are very common lesions, they seldom cause serious complications. Ganglionic cysts developing in the sheath of a peripheral nerve or joint capsule may cause compression neuropathy. We report on two cases of compression neuropathy of the common peroneal nerve caused by an extraneural ganglion and its evaluation with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography. The differential diagnosis should involve L5 root pathology, a posttraumatic intraneural hemorrhage, a

BACKGROUND: The gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa may communicate with the knee joint. The arthroscopic anatomy of the posteromedial aspect varies depending on the angle of the oblique popliteal ligament, the level at which it crosses the medial gastrocnemius tendon, and its relationship with the capsular joint and synovia. The aim of this paper is to identify possible patterns, and to evaluate their characteristics and their relationship with Baker's cyst.
METHODS: data archived from 185 consecutive arthroscopies were evaluated; an anatomic description and classification was carried out; t

OBJECTIVE: To describe ganglion cysts arising close to the origin of the medial and lateral head of gastrocnemius as identified on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: We present a series of ten cases of ganglion cysts arising close to the gastrocnemius origin from the medial and lateral femoral condyles. These were collected over a 6-year period from our imaging database. All patients attended for routine MR imaging of the knee with a variety of clinical presentations. Data collected included patient demographics, ganglion size, ganglion site, clinical presentation and ancil

The authors describe their experience in diagnosis and treatment of 267 children with hygroma of the infragenual region. The nature of the disease is still not clear with various factors such as injuries and inflammatory diseases affecting its development. Hygromas are treated surgically, recurrences occur in 8.8% of the cases. The causes of the recurrences are investigated and an operation in recurrent hygromas is proposed.

Rupture of a Baker's cyst is an under-recognized condition that may closely mimic deep vein thrombosis, often leading to diagnostic uncertainty and delayed management. Although popliteal cysts are common findings associated with degenerative or inflammatory knee disorders, their rupture represents an uncommon but clinically significant complication. Ruptured cysts typically present with acute calf swelling and pain due to extravasation of synovial fluid into the intermuscular planes. The condition may mimic venous thrombosis (pseudo-thrombophlebitis), making diagnostic accuracy essential. Dupl…

UNLABELLED: Popliteal synovial cysts (Baker's cysts) are a common occurrence in children and adults. Synovial cysts in other locations and/or with atypical extension are less common and may be confounded with tumors or other medical conditions. In this article we describe the underlying disease, clinical presentation and clinical course in six children with a sudden onset of paraarticular soft tissue masses or non-specific chronic pain. Ultrasound was the initial imaging method used in all cases; this was supplemented by MRI in three patients. Four children were diagnosed to be suffering from

We investigated the mechanism of Foucher's sign, the change in pressure in the Baker's cyst with extension and flexion of the knee, by echography, arthrography, and computed tomography. With extension the gastrocnemius and the semimembranosus muscles approximate each other and the joint capsule compressing the cyst against the deep fascia. Opposite effects in flexion allow the cyst to relax.

INTRODUCTION: Bakers (popliteal) cysts are cystic masses that arise from bursae swellings filled with synovial fluid. It is assumed that preceding osteoarthritic or meniscal injuries cause the synovial fluid to extrude and concentrate, forming a gel-like material within a cyst. Clinical presentation is either symptomatic or asymptomatic swelling. The following symptoms are commonly associated with this condition: Knee pain, stiffness, and limited knee range of motion. Based on symptomatology and etiology, the management plan can be divided into conservative versus surgical intervention, by eit

Intralymphatic histiocytosis is a rare disorder associated with a variety of inflammatory conditions. We report the case of an 89-year-old woman with a history of a right knee replacement and a ruptured popliteal cyst who developed an erythematous indurated plaque over the surgical scar. Histopathology revealed fibrosis, chronic inflammation, and histiocytes within the lymphatics consistent with intralymphatic histiocytosis. The plaque flattened following intralesional injection of triamcinolone acetonide 10 mg/cc×1.6 cc once monthly for 2 consecutive months and application of a pressure banda…

This case report describes an acute postoperative compartment syndrome of the lower leg following simple arthroscopy of the knee. The diagnostics as well as the time course of further therapeutic procedures are considered critically. Furthermore, the surgical workflow is analyzed for possible reasons. Retrospectively, an accumulation of irrigation fluid passing through a popliteal cyst into the superficial flexor compartment must be suspected. In summary, even with an optimal perioperative management the subsequent compartment syndrome due to knee arthroscopy cannot be avoided with any certain…
