The effect of chronic childhood malnutrition on pubertal growth and development.

Pubertal growth and development were compared in 342 privileged, urban children and 347 impoverished rural adolescents from Kenya. Measurements of height, weight, upper arm circumference, and triceps skinfolds revealed marked differences between the two study groups just before the onset of sexual maturation. These differences were also found in the early stages of puberty but notable catch-up was evident throughout the later period of the maturational process. Early stages of sexual maturity were delayed by 3 yr in malnourished boys with a 2.1-yr lag in the age of onset of menarche in rural g

Growth assessment in children with Williams-Beuren syndrome: a systematic review.

Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) is a rare genetic disease caused by a sporadic heterozygous microdeletion in 7q11.23. It is characterized by distinctive facial appearance, cardiopathy, short stature, intellectual disability, and endocrine abnormalities. To evaluate the growth pattern of patients with WBS and to identify the prevalence of malnutrition, overweight, and obesity in this population, a systematic review of studies published in English, between 1987 and 2018, was performed following the PRISMA protocol using the PubMed, Cochrane, and BIREME databases. Original articles and articles th

Growth patterns for untreated individuals with MPS I: Report from the international MPS I registry.

Mucopolysaccharidosis Type I (MPS I), caused by deficiency of α-L-iduronidase results in progressive, multisystemic disease with a broad phenotypic spectrum including patients with severe (Hurler syndrome) to attenuated (Hurler-Scheie and Scheie syndromes) disease. Disordered growth is common with either phenotype. The study objectives were to construct sex- and age-specific estimated length/height and head circumference growth curves for untreated individuals with severe and attenuated disease and compare them with clinical reference standards. Untreated individuals in the MPS I Registry with

Pseudorabies Virus and Brucella abortus from an Expanding Wild Pig ( Sus scrofa ) Population in Southern Oklahoma, USA.

Wild pigs ( Sus scrofa ) are causing increasing ecologic and economic damage at a global scale. Because wild pigs can carry ≥65 diseases that affect livestock, their widespread expansion threatens native wildlife and livestock. We screened wild pigs from south-central Oklahoma, US for antibodies against Brucella abortus , pseudorabies virus (PRV), and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRS). These pathogens were chosen because they are part of eradication programs in the US and could have large economic impacts on domestic livestock if transmitted from wild animals. We teste

Racial differences in vasectomy utilization in the United States: data from the national survey of family growth.

OBJECTIVES: To explore whether health care, socioeconomic, or personal characteristics account for disparities observed in the utilization of vasectomy. More than 500,000 vasectomies are performed annually in the United States. The safety and efficacy of vasectomy make it a good family planning option, yet the factors related to use of male surgical sterilization are not well understood. In this analysis, we examined differences in vasectomy rates according to factors such as race and socioeconomic status. METHODS: We analyzed data from the male sample of the 2002 National Survey of Family Gr

Prevalence of malnutrition, anemia, and soil-transmitted helminthiasis in preschool-age children living in peri-urban populations in the Peruvian Amazon.

Stunting, anemia, and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are major health concerns for children in extremely poor regions of the world, especially rural and periurban ones. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of these three cooccurring conditions in preschool-age children in an extremely poor district on the outskirts of Iquitos, in the Peruvian Amazon, to inform public health actions. Malnutrition was assessed by standard World Health Organization-recommended metrics; anemia, by hemoglobin levels; and STH, by the Kato-Katz technique. Logistic regression analyses were performe

Determinants of socioeconomic and rural-urban disparities in stunting: evidence from Indonesia.

INTRODUCTION: Stunting continues to be a prominent health problem in Indonesia. Stunting prevalence is higher in children from poor families or living in rural areas; however, there has been a lack of information on predictors of stunting disparities and stunting risk factors by socioeconomic status (SES) and location of residence (rural or urban). This study aims to examine the factors associated with stunting by SES and rural-urban status, and to assess determinants of stunting disparities by SES and rural-urban status in Indonesia. METHODS: This study analysed data from the Indonesian Fami

Israel: health and beyond.

The principle that global human identity and dignity supersede other values is a broadly accepted conviction that guides practice and policies in the realm of human health in most of the world. An assessment of the level of success that Israel has achieved in health, in the face of formidable challenges, including rapid population growth, diverse and often divided ethnic affiliations, and existential security threats, leads us to propose that extension of this principle of global human identity and dignity, together with the objective of a decent society, as overriding values beyond health to …

Using a climate-dependent model to predict mosquito abundance: application to Aedes (Stegomyia) africanus and Aedes (Diceromyia) furcifer (Diptera: Culicidae).

Mosquitoes, acting as vectors, are involved in the transmission of viruses. Thus, their abundances, which strongly depend on the weather and environment, are closely linked to major disease outbreaks. The aim of this paper is to provide a tool to predict vector abundance. In order to describe the dynamics of mosquito populations, we developed a matrix model integrating climate fluctuations. The population is structured in five stages: two egg stages (immature and mature), one larval stage and two female flying stages (nulliparous and parous). The water availability in breeding sites was consid

Laboratory estimation of degree-day developmental requirements of Phlebotomus papatasi (Diptera: Psychodidae).

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is one of the most important vector-borne endemic diseases in Turkey. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of temperature on the developmental rates of one important vector of leishmaniasis, Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli, 1786) (Diptera: Psychodidae). Eggs from laboratory-reared colonies of Phlebotomus papatasi were exposed to six constant temperature regimes from 15 to 32 degrees C with a daylength of 14 h and relative humidity of 65-75%. No adult emergence was observed at 15 degrees C. Complete egg to adult development ranged from 27.89 +/- 1

[Human rights and procreation].

The impact of procreation on freedom, health and welfare of human beings, is considerable. This relationship, however, is not mirrored in texts devoted to Human Rights. This omission obviously implies a neglect of women's and children's rights. The history of anticonceptive methods exemplifies the struggle for these rights. This conquest, which has lasted two hundred years, is far from completed. Because of the demographic outbreak in Third World countries, an ideological conflict has appeared between first generation Human Rights concerned with individual freedom ("rights of") and those of se

Constitutive and herbivore-induced plant defences regulate herbivore population processes.

Herbivore-induced plant defences regulated by the phytohormones jasmonic acid (JA) and salicylic acid (SA) are predicted to influence herbivore population dynamics, in part because they can operate in a density-dependent manner. While there is ample evidence that herbivore-induced plant responses affect individual performance and growth of herbivores, whether they scale-up to regulate herbivore population dynamics is still unclear. We evaluated the consequences of variation in plant defences and herbivore density on herbivore development, reproduction and density-dependent population growth. W…

Fibroblast growth factor 23 and risk of incident stroke in community-living adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a hormone that regulates phosphorus and vitamin D metabolism. Elevated FGF23 concentrations are associated with excess risk of cardiovascular disease. Associations of FGF23 with stroke outcomes are less clear. METHODS: Using a case-cohort study design, we examined the association of baseline plasma FGF23 concentrations with incident stroke in the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study, a cohort of black and white adults aged ≥45 years. FGF23 was measured in 615 participants who developed incident s
