Health care service utilization among patients with chronic rhinosinusitis: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Previous studies showed that chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) accounts for billions of dollars in healthcare resource utilization. However, all such study estimates of the economic burden of CRS were based on subpopulations in Western societies. This study aimed to investigate differences in the utilization of healthcare services between subjects with CRS and comparison subjects using Taiwan's National Health Insurance database. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: In total, 5,849 CRS subjects and 17,547 selected comparison subjects were included in this study.

Impact of psychiatric disorders on health-related quality of life: general population survey.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) with generic preference-based instruments enables comparisons of severity across different conditions and treatments. This is necessary for rational public health policy. AIMS: To measure HRQoL decrement and loss of quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) associated with pure and comorbid forms of depressive and anxiety disorders and alcohol dependence. METHOD: A general population survey was conducted of Finns aged 30 years and over. Psychiatric disorders were diagnosed with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview and HR

Self-rated health. Comparisons between three different measures. Results from a population study.

BACKGROUND: Self-rating of health is among the most frequently assessed health perceptions in epidemiological research. The aim of this study was to compare different measures of global self-rated health (SRH) with respect to differences in age and sex groups and relations to hypothesized determinants. METHOD: Three single-question measures of SRH were included in a health questionnaire administered to 8200 randomly chosen men and women. Two SRH measures were non-comparative, one with seven (SRH-7) and one with five response options (SRH-5), while the third measure included a comparison with

Adapting multi-criteria decision analysis of drug harms to reflect population-level health outcomes: An innovation in public health policy.

SETTING: Advocates of a public health approach to psychoactive substances need actionable evidence. In several countries, multidisciplinary groups have used multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) to generate harm scores and rankings for commonly used psychoactive substances; however, these did not fully reflect substances' prevalence of use. Public health policy decisions around psychoactive substances should be informed by population-level outcomes, which are driven by use prevalence. INTERVENTION: Led by a policy practitioner, a multidisciplinary group from across Canada conducted a MCDA o

Health service contacts for mental health and substance use on release from prison: a retrospective population-based data linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health and substance use problems among people released from prison contribute substantially to premature mortality and emergency services demand. Understanding of mental health and substance use-related health service contacts prior to these severe and costly outcomes is limited. We assessed mental health and substance use-related contact with multiple services, comparing rates of contact among people released from prison to a matched general population sample who had not recently been in prison. OBJECTIVES: To compare rates of health service contacts for mental health and

Catastrophic Health Expenditure in Mental Health as Coercion in Post-Suicide Attempt Care: A Population-Based Study in Latin America.

BACKGROUND: Despite an increase in mental health problems, there is low implementation of mental health services, high catastrophic health spending, and a high incidence of coercive mental health practices. This could hinder recovery after a suicide attempt. AIMS: To analyze catastrophic spending and coercive practices, and their relationship with variables associated with recovery (depression and well-being) and with the functioning of health services (continuity of care), in people who attempted suicide during 2024 and 2025 in Caldas, Colombia. METHOD: A cross-sectional and population-base

Chronotype Differences in Health Behaviors and Health-Related Quality of Life: A Population-Based Study Among Aged and Older Adults.

This study investigates health behaviors, health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and sleep among chronotypes in a community-based sample (n = 2,976). Analysis of covariance indicated evening types (E-types) had a significantly higher percentage of current smokers and more sleep-interfering behaviors compared to intermediate and morning types (M-type), and also lower physical activity and more sleep disturbance compared to M-types. E-types also had worse mental HRQOL compared to both chronotypes, and worse physical HRQOL compared to M-types. Exploratory analyses indicated E-types consumed more

Leveraging Administrative Health Databases to Address Health Challenges in Farming Populations: Scoping Review and Bibliometric Analysis (1975-2024).

BACKGROUND: Although agricultural health has gained importance, to date, much of the existing research relies on traditional epidemiological approaches that often face limitations related to sample size, geographic scope, temporal coverage, and the range of health events examined. To address these challenges, a complementary approach involves leveraging and reusing data beyond its original purpose. Administrative health databases (AHDs) are increasingly reused in population-based research and digital public health, especially for populations such as farmers, who face distinct environmental ris

Health system resource use among populations with complex social and behavioral needs in an urban, safety-net health system.

BACKGROUND: Costs incurred by health systems when caring for populations with social or behavioral complexity are poorly understood. We compared the frequency and costs of unreimbursed care among individuals with complexity factors (homelessness, a history of county jail incarceration, and/or substance use disorder or mental illness [SUD/MI]). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using electronic health record data for adults aged 18 and older between January 1, 2016 and December 31, 2017 from a Midwestern safety-net health system.
