The clinical impact of health behaviors on emergency department visits.

Modifiable health behaviors are an important cause of visits to emergency departments (EDs). Substance use, unsafe sexual behavior, interpersonal violence, unintentional injury, and other risky behaviors account for a large proportion of ED volume, as well as up to 40% of all deaths in the United States. While emergency physicians commonly treat the illnesses and injuries caused by these behaviors, additional opportunities exist to screen, intervene, refer, and initiate treatment for patients with these health risks. This article reviews the epidemiology and clinical impact of risky health beh

Behavioral compliance with preventive health measures for students with and without hearing disability during COVID-19 pandemic: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hearing loss affects over 1.5 billion individuals worldwide. Their disability and limited access to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic information make them suffer a greater degree than ordinary people. However, the quantitative studies on the implementation of behavior compliance with preventive health measures for vulnerable groups such as people with hearing disability were limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the compliance with pandemic-related protective health measures among people with hearing disability. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey, population-based coh

Integrating Cervical Cancer Screening and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Care among Women Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus: A Call for Action.

Cervical cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related morbidity and mortality in women living with human immunodeficiency virus (WLHIV) worldwide. However, there is no nationwide public health policy in India that aims to prevent cervical cancer among WLHIV. Thus, the integration of cervical cancer preventive services within existing HIV care programs is essential. This study proposes a framework for healthcare providers and policymakers to enhance the integration of cervical cancer screening services within existing HIV care programs in India. This aims to improve access to early detection and

Confidentiality Issues and Use of Sexually Transmitted Disease Services Among Sexually Experienced Persons Aged 15-25 Years - United States, 2013-2015.

National-level data are limited regarding confidentiality-related issues and the use of sexually transmitted disease (STD) services for adolescents and young adults. Changes in the U.S. health care system have permitted dependent children to remain on a parent's health insurance plan until the child's 26th birthday and required coverage of certain preventive services, including some STD services, without cost sharing for most plans (1,2). Although these provisions likely facilitate access to the health care system, adolescents and young adults might not seek care or might delay seeking care fo

Development of and satisfaction with a short-term outpatient preventive medical service for working informal caregivers: a study protocol of a non-randomized prospective pilot study.

BACKGROUND: About 80% of care receivers (CRs) in Germany are cared for at home by family members or friends. These informal caregivers (CGs) often report a high burden from caregiving, which negatively affects their mental and physical health and often results in reduced work hours. CGs with statutory health insurance can apply for preventive medical services. A change in the law has allowed the duration of service to be split. Recent research postulated specialized digital and analog multi-component interventions to protect CGs' health, which the pAKur project wants to develop and implement i

A Preventive Social Media Intervention for Perinatal Depression and Anxiety in Regional, Rural, and Remote Communities: Participatory Co-Design Study.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression and anxiety are significant public health concerns, affecting up to 1 in 5 women globally, with disproportionate burden carried by women in regional, rural, and remote communities where structural and social inequities amplify vulnerability. Access to perinatal mental health support in these settings is severely constrained by geographical isolation, workforce shortages, financial barriers, and a lack of culturally safe services. Prevention is recognized as critical to reducing this burden, with evidence suggesting that effective preventive approaches can reduc

Obesity disparities in preventive care: findings from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, 2005-2007.

Obesity and its consequences are a major health concern. There are conflicting reports regarding utilization of preventive health-care services among obese patients. Our objective was to determine whether obese patients receive the same preventive care as normal weight patients. Weighted patient clinic visit data from the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) were analyzed for all adult patient visits with height/weight data (N = 866,415,856) from 2005 to 2007. Preventive care practice patterns were compared among different weight groups of normal, obese, and morbidly obese. Obese pa

Stillbirths: ending preventable deaths by 2030.

Efforts to achieve the new worldwide goals for maternal and child survival will also prevent stillbirth and improve health and developmental outcomes. However, the number of annual stillbirths remains unchanged since 2011 and is unacceptably high: an estimated 2.6 million in 2015. Failure to consistently include global targets or indicators for stillbirth in post-2015 initiatives shows that stillbirths are hidden in the worldwide agenda. This Series paper summarises findings from previous papers in this Series, presents new analyses, and proposes specific criteria for successful integration of

[Health Care Use by Intellectually Disabled People: A Cross-Sectional Study in three Sheltered Workshops].

STUDY OBJECTIVE: People with intellectual disabilities have a lower life expectancy and more frequent comorbidities than the general population and have unmet health needs. Insufficient medical care is suspected to be one reason, for which little data is available in Germany. The study therefore focuses on the question of how people with intellectual disabilities make use of medical care, including screening and preventive measures. METHOD: In a cross-sectional study in 3 workshops for people with intellectual disabilities, the use of health care was surveyed by means of questionnaires from t

A Geriatric Approach to Percutaneous Coronary Interventions in Older Adults, Part II: A JACC: Advances Expert Panel.

About two in five children and adolescents will meet the criteria for a mental disorder by age 18, and more than half of youth who are accessing mental health services receive them in an educational setting. Yet there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of school-based interventions on children's mental health and education outcomes. We examine the effectiveness of two key United States' federally-funded interventions for expanding school-based capacities to improve children's health and education outcomes-School-Based Health Centers (SBHCs) and Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Educat

A Revised Public Health Emergency Preparedness Logic Model Reflecting the European Experience in the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In 2017, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control developed a public health emergency preparedness logic model for European Union, differentiating between capacities (resources and infrastructure) and response capabilities (actions during emergencies). Analysis of the COVID-19 experience suggests that the main features of this logic model, including the 5 high-level categories of capabilities, remain valid. Some changes are needed, however, in 3 areas. In the detection and assessment area, "laboratory analysis" was integrated with "testing" to better represent their combined role
