Forensic applications of 3D printing - a review of literature, case studies and future implications.

The technological revolution has impacted every facet of life, including crime and law enforcement. Following the adoption of digital evidence, artificial intelligence, and CT scans, scientists and legal professionals have now turned to three-dimensional (3D) printing to present evidence more clearly in a court of law. 3D printing is a process of creating physical objects by depositing materials layer by layer, based on digital models, to form solid, tangible replicas. It has a wide range of applications across various fields of forensic science, including explosives analysis, ballistics, fore…

Germination-driven modifications in pulse carbohydrates for optimized 3D food printing inks and structures.

This study investigates the development of extrusion-based 3D food printing (3DFP) inks using carbohydrate-rich flours from lentil and pea byproducts, before and after germination. Germination, a natural modification method, improved rheological and textural properties of 3DFP inks by reducing insoluble dietary fiber and increasing pasting viscosities, especially in pea carbohydrate-rich flour (PCRF). One-day germination improved shear-thinning behavior and viscoelastic moduli in germinated PCRF (PCRFG), enhancing printability. Optimal texture was achieved using 12 % PCRF at 80 °C. Extruder te…

4D printing of trigger-free shape-memory hydrogels towards self-adaptive substrates for bioelectronics.

Shape-changing smart substrates are revolutionizing implantable bioelectronics by offering minimal invasiveness and self-adaptive geometric conformity. However, precise manipulation of shapeshifting, which is critical for the successful implantation, are hindered by triggering accessibility and cumbersome customization. Here we introduce a digital 4D printing technique for fabricating customized shape memory hydrogel substrates enabling trigger-free shapeshifting with predefined onset periods. By controlling spatio-temporal light exposure, pixelated polymer sheets with heterogeneous networks a…

3D printing innovations in catheter design to reduce catheter-associated infections: a scoping review.

Catheter-associated infections (CAIs) remain a significant healthcare challenge, driven by biofilm formation, antimicrobial resistance, and design limitations of conventional catheters. While coatings and sterilization methods have advanced, long-term infection prevention is often inadequate. This scoping review, conducted using PRISMA-ScR guidelines, analyzed 36 peer-reviewed studies selected from 545 records retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Eight innovation domains were identified: 3D printing technologies, antimicrobial coatings, surface engineering, biodegradable material…

Designing Oral Films Based on Beeswax: Comparative Assessment of 3D Printing and Solvent Casting.

BACKGROUND: From the perspective of drug delivery systems, oral films (OFs) have received increased attention, mainly for pediatric and geriatric applications. Beeswax, a naturally derived and FDA-approved material, is often mixed with other polymers to enhance its mechanical properties. This study presented the first use of precisely controlled, solvent-free pressure-assisted micro-syringe printing to produce OFs. METHODS: Solvent casting and pressure-assisted micro-syringe printing were employed to produce hybrid film structures composed of beeswax, polyvinyl alcohol, borax, and hydroxyprop…

Bone regeneration remains a challenge and designing scaffolds to replicate the natural bone structure (complex hierarchical network) while p … ns (3-6 mm cell size, 70 % porosity) and fabricated from polylactic acid using stereolithography 3D printing technique. Furthermore, multi-morphology graded (MMG) lattice structure designs were proposed, combining two TPMS unit cell types, which showed high mechanical properties. Gradient transitions were introduced using sinusoidal patterns along a single …

Fully customizable bronze-PLA lung shields using 3D printing for total body irradiation (TBI).

Purpose. Total body irradiation (TBI) is a critical component in the treatment of hematological malignancies, but it carries a risk of radiation-induced lung damage. Traditional lung shields, typically made of lead or Cerrobend, are used to protect lung tissue during TBI. However, these shields require manual fabrication, present toxicity concerns, and are difficult to reproduce in the precise geometry needed for each individual patient. This study investigates the feasibility of 3D-printed bronze-polylactic acid (PLA) lung shields as a non-toxic, customizable alternative to conventional shiel

Multiple H-bonds induced mechanically robust vat photopolymerization 3D printing poly(urethane-urea) elastomers.

Vat photopolymerization (VP) elastomers show great promise across various fields, yet they face significant challenges in achieving adequate mechanical strength, elasticity, and durability due to incomplete polymerization and weak interfacial bonding between printed layers. In this study, we introduce high-performance poly(urethane-urea) elastomers (PUEs) utilizing a dual cross-linked network (DCN) strategy compatible with VP 3D printing. This innovative approach enhances mechanical properties by incorporating multiple hydrogen-bonded urethane and urea groups. The presence of multiple hydrogen…

Effects of honeycomb surfaces on bond strength to zirconia fabricated with 3-dimensional printing.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: In dental applications, the bonding ability of zirconia to resin remains a significant limitation to its broader clinical use. The microstructures on its surface can improve bonding strength, but the effects of honeycomb structures remain unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of surface honeycomb structures on the bond strength to zirconia fabricated with advanced customized jetting (ACJ) technology, a 3-dimensional printing method. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Honeycomb structures with varying depths (60, 80, and 100 µm) and widths (100, 200,…

Advancements in 3D printing technologies for personalized treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology has shown significant promise in the medical field, particularly in orthopedics, prosthetics, tissue engineering, and pharmaceutical preparations. This review focuses on the innovative application of 3D printing in addressing the challenges of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery, which is often suboptimal for younger patients, 3D printing offers precise localization of necrotic areas and the ability to create personalized implants. By integrating advanced biomaterials, this technology offers a promising…

High-precision 3D printing of multi-branch vascular scaffold with plasticized PLCL thermoplastic elastomer.

Three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as a transformative technology for tissue engineering, enabling the production of structures that closely emulate the intricate architecture and mechanical properties of native biological tissues. However, the fabrication of complex microstructures with high accuracy using biocompatible, degradable thermoplastic elastomers poses significant technical obstacles. This is primarily due to the inherent soft-matter nature of such materials, which complicates real-time control of micro-squeezing, resulting in low fidelity or even failure. In this study, we…
