BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign lesion and rarely involves the patella. This disease is characterized by a relatively high recurrence rate after primary treatment. En bloc resection has been a predominant option for recurrent GCT. However, total patellectomy can lead to disruption of the knee. Therefore, exploration of functional reconstruction of the extensor mechanism is worthwhile.
CASE SUMMARY: A 54-year-old woman presented with right knee pain and swelling, and was diagnosed as having a GCT in the patella following curettage and autograft. Medical imaging revealed a lytic

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a common disorder that may be idiopathic, caused by trauma, or associated with alcohol or glucocorticoid use. The goals of early treatment include delaying or avoiding hip replacement, but there are no effective treatments for early-stage disease. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of treatment with 3D-printed porous titanium alloy scaffold combined with daily intraperitoneal trans-cinnamaldehyde (TCA) in a dog model of ONFH. Four weeks after creation of the ONFH model, MRI examination of the femoral head showed the characterist

Defects in bone are some of the most difficult injuries to treat. Biomimetic scaffolds represent a promising approach for successful bone tissue regeneration. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) scaffold with osteo-inductive functionality was designed and assayed both in-vitro and in-vivo. Bone formation peptide-1 (BFP1), an osteo-promoting specific peptide, was covalently bound to a 3D printed polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold using polydopamine (DOPA). The amount of BFP1 immobilized on the surface was found to increase depending on the BFP1 concentration of the loading solution. To observe

BACKGROUND: Tuberculum sellae meningiomas (TSMs) are surgically demanding because of their proximity to the optic apparatus, anterior communicating artery complex, and supraclinoid carotid arteries. The expanded endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) is a viable alternative to transcranial surgery for selected midline lesions, but safe navigation of these neurovascular relationships requires detailed preoperative planning. Patient-specific three-dimensional (3D) printing is an established tool for anatomical simulation and rehearsal before skull base surgery (SBS).

Limited cadaver availability and health risks from formaldehyde-treated cadavers have increased the need for alternative learning materials in veterinary anatomy education. Two studies were conducted to investigate whether low-fidelity 3D-printed models provide comparable learning outcomes to real specimens. In study 1, veterinary students were assigned to two groups to study the equine distal limb on a real specimen (n = 67) or a 3D model (n = 68). In study 2, students were divided into four groups to study the canine forelimb on a real specimen (n = 44), a 3D model (n = 45), a 3D model follo

This study integrated a locking plate system into three-dimensional (3D)-printed implants and evaluated whether directly 3D-printed locking plate holes could achieve mechanical performance comparable to their machined counterpart. In vitro mechanical tests were performed to compare a 3D-printed 3.5-mm locking plate system with a commercially available variable-angle locking system (ARIX). Locking plate specimens (n = 90) were 3D printed from Ti6Al4V in three build orientations (0, 45 and 90 degrees). A torque limit test assessed the failure points under three screw insertion torques (0.6, 1.1

Interbody fusion is a workhorse technique in lumbar spine surgery that facilities indirect decompression, sagittal plane realignment, and successful bony fusion. The 2 most commonly employed cage materials are titanium (Ti) alloy and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). While Ti alloy implants have superior osteoinductive properties they more poorly match the biomechanical properties of cancellous bones. Newly developed 3-dimensional (3D)-printed porous titanium (3D-pTi) address this disadvantage and are proposed as a new standard for lumbar interbody fusion (LIF) devices. In the present study, the li

Oral leukoplakia, which presents as white lesions in the oral cavity, including on the tongue, is precancerous in nature. Conservative treatment is preferable, since surgical removal can markedly reduce the patient's quality of life. In the present study, we focused on the flavonoid apigenin as a potential compound for preventing carcinogenesis, and an apigenin-loaded mucoadhesive oral film was prepared using a three-dimensional (3D) bioprinter (semi-solid extrusion-type 3D printer). Apigenin-loaded printer inks are composed of pharmaceutical excipients (HPMC, CARBOPOL, and Poloxamer), water,

BACKGROUND: As the frequency of spine surgery increases in the veterinary field, many studies have been conducted on minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS). Although many studies have been conducted on the thoracolumbar spine about MISS in animals, several problems and limitations have emerged regarding this method. Therefore, we developed a three-dimensional (3D) printed patient-specific surgical guide (3DPSSG) using 3D printing technology to overcome these problems. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy and safety of the 3DPSSG in minimally invasive mini-hemilaminectomy-corpectomy (MI-MHC). MI-
