Low trait self-control in problem gamblers: evidence from self-report and behavioral measures.

Problems with self-control are seen as a key cause of problem gambling behavior. Yet, self-control is rarely studied directly in gambling studies. We demonstrated that self-report and behavioral measures (derived from the strength model of self-control) show lower trait self-control in problem gamblers. In Study 1, a sample of 2,208 undergraduate students from the University of Guelph, Canada (73% female, mean age = 19 years, SD = 4) completed a self-report measure of self-control strength. In Study 2, a sample of 296 University of Guelph students and staff (58% female, mean age = 19 years, SD

Behavioral and academic problems in children with Sturge-Weber syndrome: differences between children with and without seizures.

Although Sturge-Weber (SWS) syndrome is associated with behavioral and academic problems in childhood, it is unknown whether those problems are concomitants of the disorder itself or of the seizure disorder that is common in SWS. We compared two groups of children with SWS-- one with seizures (n=20) and one without seizures (n=14)--on parent-report and teacher-report measures of behavioral and academic functioning. The two subgroups were compared with each other as well as with children with epilepsy alone (n=29) and a group of healthy controls (n=21). The SWS group with seizures was more impa

Behavior problems of 9-16 year old preterm children: biological, sociodemographic, and intellectual contributions.

BACKGROUND: Preterm children are at risk for behavior problems. Studies examining contributions of intellectual and environmental factors to behavior outcomes in preterm children are mixed. AIMS: (1) To identify the nature of maladaptive behaviors in preterm children age 9 to 16 years born across the spectrum of gestational age and birth weight (BW). (2) To examine contributions of BW as a biological factor, socioeconomic status as an environmental factor, and intelligence quotient (IQ) as indicative of intellectual ability to behavior outcomes. METHOD: Using the Child Behavior Checklist, pa

Modeling the interplay of multilevel risk factors for future academic and behavior problems: a person-centered approach.

This study identified profiles of 13 risk factors across child, family, school, and neighborhood domains in a diverse sample of children in kindergarten from four US locations (n = 750; 45% minority). It then examined the relation of those early risk profiles to externalizing problems, school failure, and low academic achievement in Grade 5. A person-centered approach, latent class analysis, revealed four unique risk profiles, which varied considerably across urban African American, urban White, and rural White children. Profiles characterized by several risks that cut across multiple domains

Math performance and behavior problems in children affected by prenatal alcohol exposure: intervention and follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), resulting from maternal alcohol use during pregnancy, are associated with significant academic and behavior problems. Although affected children are common in clinical practice, information to guide recommendations about interventions with this high risk group is very limited. This study evaluated the persistence of effects of an intervention on the math performance and behavior of 54 children, 3- to 10-years, diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome or FASD. METHODS: Children were randomly assigned to a 6-week Math intervention (n = 28) tailor

Caregiver unresolved loss and abuse and child behavior problems: intergenerational effects in a high-risk sample.

This study examines the intergenerational effects of caregivers' unresolved loss and abuse on children's behavior problems from middle childhood to early adolescence in an economically disadvantaged sample. One hundred twenty-four caregivers completed the Adult Attachment Interview (AAI) and a lifetime trauma interview during the age 13 wave of the study. Child behavior problems were assessed at four time points (ages 6, 8, 10, and 13) with teacher-reported Child Behavior Checklist total problem scales. The children of insecure caregivers with unresolved loss showed a consistent pattern of inc

Sexual problems and associated help-seeking behavior patterns: results of a population-based survey in France.

OBJECTIVES: To report the sexual activity, the prevalence of sexual problems and related help-seeking behavior among adults in France. METHODS: A telephone survey was conducted in 2001 and 2002. Interviews were based on a standardized questionnaire including demographic details, overall health, relationships, and sexual behaviors, attitudes and beliefs. RESULTS: A total of 1500 individuals (750 men, 750 women) aged 40 to 80 years completed the survey. Eighty-one percent of men and 65% of women had engaged in sexual intercourse during the 12 months preceding the interview. Premature ejaculati

What is spared by fetal brain-sparing? Fetal circulatory redistribution and behavioral problems in the general population.

Intrauterine growth restriction has been linked to infant behavioral problems. While typically only birth weight is examined, here the authors assessed fetal circulatory redistribution, also called the "brain-sparing effect," which is a fetal adaptive reaction to placental insufficiency. They aimed to investigate whether fetal circulatory redistribution protects against behavioral problems. Within the Generation R Study (Rotterdam, the Netherlands, 2003-2007), fetal circulation variables for the umbilical artery and the middle and anterior cerebral arteries were assessed with Doppler ultrasoun

Adjustment problems in the family and school contexts, attitude towards authority, and violent behavior at school in adolescence.

This study analyzed the role of different but interrelated variables in the family and school contexts in relation to problems of violent behavior at school during adolescence. Participants were 1,068 students aged 11 to 16 (47% male) drawn from secondary schools in the Valencian Community (Spain). Statistical analyses were carried out using structural equation modeling. The model accounted for 32% of the variance in school violence. Results showed a direct association between quality of communication with father and teacher's expectations of the student with the adolescent's involvement in vi

Oral health, dental anxiety, and behavior management problems in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common developmental disorder. The aim of this study was to investigate whether children with ADHD have a higher caries prevalence, a higher degree of dental anxiety, or more dental behavior management problems (BMP) than children of a control group. Twenty-five children with ADHD and a control group of 58 children, all aged 11 yr, were included in the study. The children underwent a clinical dental examination, and bitewing radiographs were taken. The parents completed the Dental Subscale of Children's Fear Survey Schedule (CFSS-DS). Dental

Effects of adolescent manic symptoms on agreement between youth, parent, and teacher ratings of behavior problems.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the extent to which manic symptoms might influence the self-report ratings of adolescents as compared to parent and teacher ratings, although there are clinical reasons to believe that mania would increase disagreement. METHODS: Parents and youths between the ages of 11 and 17 years were evaluated with the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children (KSADS), Young Mania Rating Scale, and Child Depression Rating Scale-Revised. Based on the KSADS results, subjects were assigned to either a bipolar spectrum group (e.g., meeting cri

Symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing in 5-year-old children are associated with sleepiness and problem behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in children is reportedly associated with problem behaviors suggestive of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder; however, there are few data on the relation of SDB to problem behaviors in the general pediatric population. The goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of SDB symptoms in 5-year-old children and their relation to sleepiness and problem behaviors. METHODS: A population-based, cross-sectional survey was conducted of a birth cohort of children who were born in eastern Massachusetts. Subjects were 3019 5-year-old children (1551 bo…

Preadolescent children of substance-dependent fathers with antisocial personality disorder: psychiatric disorders and problem behaviors.

We compared psychiatric disorders and problem behavior scores in pre-adolescent children of fathers with alcohol or other drug dependence and ASP (SD+/ASP+), children whose fathers had substance dependence without ASP (SD+/ASP-), and children whose fathers were without either disorder (SD-/ASP-). SD+/ASP+ children showed elevated rates of major depression, conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, and separation anxiety disorder when compared to SD+/ASP- and SD-/ASP- children. SD+/ASP+ children had higher internalizing and externalizing problem …

Longitudinal course of behavioral problems during Alzheimer's disease: linear versus curvilinear patterns of decline.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) are commonly assumed to experience a linear decline in behavioral functioning that parallels progressive cognitive decline. However, some researchers have suggested that specific behavioral problems either decline at different rates or improve in late dementia. METHODS: The present analyses examined 150 AD patients at an initial assessment, 61 of whom were also evaluated annually on two additional occasions. Measures of cognitive impairment and behavioral problems were obtained. RESULTS: Cross-sectional results indicated curvilinear associat

More than the terrible twos: the nature and severity of behavior problems in clinic-referred preschool children.

The primary goals of this study are to describe the nature and severity of disruptive behavior problems in clinic-referred preschoolers from low-income environments and to explore the validity of DSM-IV disruptive disorders for young children. We examine the relation between DSM-IV symptoms, standardized behavior checklists, and observational ratings as a means of exploring measurement validity in this age group. Seventy-nine clinic-referred preschoolers (ages 2 through 5 years) from low-income environments were assessed. To examine whether clinic-referred preschool children have symptoms that

Attachment relationships among children with aggressive behavior problems: the role of disorganized early attachment patterns.

This article reviews recent attachment-related studies of early aggression. That aggressive behavior toward peers is related to disorganized or controlling patterns of attachment behavior toward parents but not to avoidant or ambivalent patterns. Longitudinal attachment studies indicate that risk factors identified in cross-sectional studies of aggressive school-age children, such as family adversity, parental hostility, parental depression, and child cognitive deficits, are already evident in infancy and predictive of later aggression, before the onset of coercive child behavior. In infancy,

A study of problem behaviors in 10- to 15-year-old biologically related and unrelated international adoptees.

Genetic and environmental influences on problem behaviors were studied in a sample of international adoptees. Parental ratings of childrens' problem behaviors were obtained with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). The sample (mean age, 12.4 years) comprised a group of biological siblings (111 pairs), a group of nonbiological siblings (221 pairs), and a group of singletons (94). Nonshared environmental influences were most important for problem behaviors studied in this paper. Genetic influences were substantial for Externalizing behaviors but unimportant for Internalizing behaviors. For the C…

Emotional/behavioral problems in clinic and nonclinic children: correspondence among child, parent and teacher reports.

This study examined the correspondence among child, parent and teacher reports, in rating emotional and behavioral problems of 98 community nonpatients and 64 clinically referred children (ages 6-13). The mean ratings differed significantly for the three sources and for the two samples, and there were a few significant interactions. Correlations of the scores between sources, especially parents and teachers, were in the moderate range and were not significantly different from one another. Informant correspondence was higher for externalizing than internalizing problems in both patient and nonp

Video game playing time and problem behaviors in children: A large Japanese nationwide longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Increasing video game time is a public health issue, and there is a growing trend toward restricting gameplay from childhood. Given that the relationship between video game playing time and problem behaviors remains unclear, we examined the association in children. METHODS: Using a national survey that includes all infants born in Japan on January 10 and 17, and July 10 and 17, 2001, we analyzed data from 28126 participants to examine the relationship between video game playing time at 7 years old and the four types of problem behaviors at 8 years old (i.e., unsociability, fights …

Childhood facial emotion recognition: Associations with the parental emotional environment and child emotional and behavioral problems.

Impairments in negative facial emotion recognition (FER) are widely reported in children with internalizing and externalizing problems; however, it remains unclear whether these impairments reflect response biases or reduced discrimination accuracy. Children's emotion socialization is informed by the emotional climate at home, yet parental mental health and Expressed Emotion (EE) are rarely examined together in relation to child FER. This study examined associations between parental mental health, EE, the severity of child internalizing and externalizing problems, and children's recognition of
