Re-imagining poppers regulation in Canada: Perspectives from pharmacists, pharmacy students and public health practitioners.

Alkyl nitrites, commonly known as poppers, remain widely used in Canada despite regulatory prohibitions that restrict their sale as prescription-only substances. This incongruence between policy and practice has contributed to unregulated supply chains, product contamination, and missed opportunities for harm reduction - particularly among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, who use poppers at higher rates. This commentary examines the implications of reclassifying poppers as Schedule II drugs, permitting pharmacist-mediated, non-prescription access, drawing on perspectives fro

Student radiographers' role ideals and role realities: Exploring the technical-interpersonal imbalance across two cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: Student radiographers are routinely asked to balance technical imaging competencies with psychosocial patient care, yet evidence suggests technical priorities continue to dominate practice. This study explores whether this imbalance persists at foundational educational levels and examines how students justify their role reality. METHODS: Qualitative study using reflexive thematic analysis. Two cohorts of diagnostic radiography students from a single UK HEI participated in semi-structured focus groups. Data collection phases were 12 years apart, enabling comparison before and aft

Exploring the implementation and integration of structured medication reviews in primary care: a qualitative evaluation using normalisation process theory.

BACKGROUND: Structured medication reviews (SMRs) were introduced into primary care in England in 2020 for patients living with multiple long-term conditions (MLTC), polypharmacy, increased frailty, in care homes, or at risk of medicines-related harm. SMRs aim to optimise the therapeutic potential of medication and reduce medicine-related harms through holistic reviews. AIM: To explore the day-to-day work being undertaken with, and by, clinical pharmacists to implement, embed, and integrate SMRs into practice, and consider how to optimise SMRs. DESIGN AND SETTING: Qualitative one-to-one inter

[Teachable moments: the right moment to make patients change their lifestyle].

Healthcare professionals can play a significant role in the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases. Yet there is still relatively little attention to lifestyle counseling, partly because of limited available time and doubts about its effectiveness. During so-called 'teachable moments', patients may be more receptive towards lifestyle advices and more motivated to change their lifestyle. For example during pregnancy, disease diagnoses, abnormal test results or even the corona crisis, patients may suddenly face lifestyle change differently. In this paper, we provide guidelines to healthcare pr

Involvement of Acute Care Physical Therapists in Care Transitions for Older Adults Following Acute Hospitalization: A Cross-sectional National Survey.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent evidence has suggested physical therapist involvement in care transitions after hospitalization is associated with reduced rates of hospital readmissions. However, little is known about how physical therapists participate in care transitions for older adults, the content of care communications, and the facilitators and barriers of implementing evidence-based care transition strategies into practice. Thus, the purpose of this article is to evaluate participation in care transition activities known to influence readmission risk among older adults, and understand pe

Next step in antibiotic stewardship: Pharmacist-provided penicillin allergy testing.

WHAT IS KNOWN: Penicillin allergy limits therapeutic options for patients but often disappears over time, leaving patients erroneously labelled allergic and leading to the utilization of broad-spectrum and more expensive antibiotics. Penicillin allergy can be effectively assessed via skin testing. OBJECTIVE: To improve patient access to penicillin allergy testing by implementing a pharmacist-provided service in a hospital setting. COMMENT: Beta-lactams remain a mainstream therapy for many infections due to their effectiveness, low side effects and affordability. Typically, patient access to
