The effect of 1,000 mg of tetracycline hydrochloride and 200 mg of minocycline hydrochloride on Propionibacterium acnes levels and skin-surface lipid levels was measured in 15 patients with acne. Herein described is a case of biofilm obstructing ventriculoperitoneal shunt due to Cutibacteirum acnes infection in a patient with coccidioidal meningitis. Cutibacterium acnes infects and obstructs cerebral shunts by the production of biofilm; however, diagnosis is usually missed by routine aerobic cultures. Obtaining anaerobic cultures routinely in patients with foreign body implants leading to central nervous system infections could prevent a missed diagnosis of this pathogen. Penicillin G is the first-line treatment.

Tailored skin microbiome modulation approaches with probiotics are highly challenging. Here, we show that lactobacilli are underestimated members of the skin microbiota. We select specific strains of nomadic lactobacilli for their functional applicability on the skin and capacity to inhibit growth and inflammation by skin pathobionts.
