Without meaningful and intuitive sensory feedback, even the most advanced prosthetic limbs remain insensate and impose an enormous cognitive burden during use. The regenerative peripheral nerve interface can serve as a novel bidirectional motor and sensory neuroprosthetic interface. In previous human studies, regenerative peripheral nerve interfaces demonstrated stable high-amplitude motor electromyography signals with excellent signal-to-noise ratio for prosthetic control. In addition, they can treat and prevent postamputation pain by mitigating neuroma formation. In this study, the authors i

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder complaints have high re-occurrence rates and scapular control seems to be a major influencing factor in sub-acromial impingement syndromes (SIS). Scapular dyskinesia disrupts the scapulohumeral rhythm, altering biomechanical loads on the rotator cuff in shoulder movements. As a result, this disturbs the natural healing process. Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) seems to be a promising treatment approach because it has a focus on motor learning. This case report seeks to illustrate the clinical reasoning and feasibility of applying the comprehensive nature o

Deficits in proprioception, the ability to discriminate the relative position and movement of our limbs, affect ~50% of stroke patients and reduce functional outcomes. Our lack of knowledge of the anatomical correlates of proprioceptive processing limits our understanding of the impact that such deficits have on recovery. This research investigated the relationship between functional impairment in brain activity and proprioception post-stroke. We developed a novel device and task for arm position matching during functional MRI (fMRI), and investigated 16 subjects with recent stroke and nine he…

Recording of neural signals from intact peripheral nerves in patients with spinal cord injury or stroke survivors offers the possibility for the development of closed-loop sensorimotor prostheses. However, questions remain over the positioning of neural interfaces such that the separability of neural data recorded from the peripheral nerves is improved. Afferent electroneurographic signals were recorded with nerve cuffs placed on the sciatic nerve of rats in response to various mechanical stimuli to the hindpaw. The mean absolute value of the signal was extracted and fed into classifiers. The

The physiotherapist's clinical practice includes proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), which is a treatment concept that accelerates the response of neuromuscular mechanisms through spiral and diagonal movements. The adaptations that occur in the nervous system following PNF are still poorly described in the literature. Thus, this study had a goal to investigate the electrophysiological changes in the fronto-parietal circuit during PNF and movement in sagittal and diagonal patterns. This study included 30 female participants, who were divided into three groups (control, PNF, and fle

Ankle proprioceptive information is integrated by the central nervous system to generate and modulate muscle contractions for maintaining standing balance. This study evaluated the association of ankle joint proprioception with objective and self-report measures of balance, mobility, and physical function across the adult life span. Seven hundred and ninety participants (age range 24-97 years, 362 women) who completed ankle proprioception assessment between 2010 and 2014 were included in the present study from the population-based cohort of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA), USA…

Each muscle of the extraocular muscles, containing abundant muscle spindles, was exposed to horseradish peroxidase (HRP) on 8 young pigs (2-month-old, 20-30 kg in body weight, both sexes). The results obtained are follows: The HRP-labelled neurons innervating the superior rectus muscle were always found in a crescent ventro-medio-dorsal fashion in the most medial position of the contralateral oculomotor nucleus. The HRP-labelled cells for the medial rectus muscle appeared close to the superior rectus group in the ipsilateral nucleus. The labelled cells for the inferior rectus muscle appeared i

The neural crest gives rise to diverse cell types, including the proprioceptive sensory neurons that relay limb and organ position to the central nervous system. Studying how these neurons interact with their peripheral targets in a human context has been constrained by the lack of integrated in vitro models that combine neural crest derivatives with functional effector tissue. Here, we present a protocol for generating spontaneously beating neuromyocardial organoids from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs), incorporating neural crest-derived proprioceptive-biased neurons. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and a major cause of long-term disability. These deficits may alter the body representation of the affected limb. Recent evidence suggests that Virtual Reality (VR), particularly when integrating body illusion paradigms, may enhance neuroplasticity and improve motor and proprioceptive abilities after stroke. This study investigated the effectiveness of a VR-based rehabilitation program for upper-limb motor and proprioceptive deficits. Participants were adults (both sexes) aged 18-85 years with ischemic or haemorrhagic stroke occurring from

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic sensorimotor peripheral neuropathy (DSPN) is a common complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). However, it is still unclear how the cortical processing of proprioceptive afference is altered due to DSPN.
METHODS: Cortical responses to right and left ankle joint rotations were recorded with magnetoencephalography and pooled together in 20 T1DM participants and 20 healthy controls for source space comparisons. T1DM participants also underwent a lower limb nerve-conduction study to correlate peripheral nerve function with the cortical responses.
RESULTS: Primary sens
