BACKGROUND: Mutations in the human peripherin/retinal degeneration slow (rds) gene have been found in patients with macular dystrophies as well as in those with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa. The authors studied the clinical features in members of two families with autosomal dominant retinitis pigmentosa and a previously unreported mutation in the peripherin/rds gene.
METHODS: Affected family members underwent a clinical ophthalmic examination and electrophysiologic and psychophysical testing. Available family members were evaluated for a mutation in the peripherin/rds gene.

In a subset of aspirin-tolerant asthmatics, administration of aspirin improves respiratory symptoms. We present a patient with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps who exhibited relief of nasal obstruction and nasal discharge and improvement in the sense of smell following oral administration of 150 mg of aspirin daily. Improvement in the patency of the nasal passages was documented by nasal endoscopy and magnetic resonance imaging. Improvement of olfactory function was documented by validated psychophysical olfactory testing and by means of olfactory event-related potentials.

An estimate of the traveling wave velocity (TWV) was evaluated in 18 young adults to determine the technique's applicability as a possible tool in evaluating Meniere's disease. This TWV estimation uses a derived auditory brain stem response procedure requiring high-intensity masking. The results indicate that on average, TWVs were similar to those obtained via psychophysical measures or electrocochleography. However, instances of undermasking, due to subjects' intolerance, resulted in a number of subjects exhibiting faster than expected TWVs.

Stiles--Crawford functions (SCF's) were measured for both eyes of an albino observer with a marked pendular nystagmus using an eye position monitoring system. The visually evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) were examined in 22 patients with optic neuritis. 1. In the acute stage, amplitude and latency time of the VECPs are impaired not only on the affected eye, but often also of the fellow eye. 2. A bilateral disturbance of the VECPs often persists in the recovery period, although psychophysical functions, including color vision remain normal. 3. It follows that in cases of unilateral optic neuritis, demyelinations without clinical evidence may occur in the optic nerve of the fellow eye.
