Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and vision.

This review describes a group of diseases known as the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), which affect animals and humans. Examination of affected brain tissue suggests that these diseases are caused by the acquisition and deposition of prion protein (PrP). Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) is the most important form of TSE in humans with at least four different varieties of the disease. Variant CJD (vCJD), a new form of the disease found in the UK, has several features that differ from the classical forms including early age of onset, longer duration of disease, psychiatric prese

Nystagmus: diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Nystagmus can have either a jerk (slow and quick phase) or a pendular waveform. Saccadic oscillations can either be back-to-back saccades or have an interval between two saccades. Both nystagmus and oscillations can decrease visual acuity and cause oscillopsia. Each type of nystagmus is attributable to instability or an inadequacy of specific ocular motor systems, including vestibular, optokinetic, smooth pursuit, fixation and the neural integrator. Saccadic oscillations are attributable to instability of the saccadic system. Nystagmus that develops during infancy will not decrease visual acui

[A lateralized reduction of NAA in a case of corticobasal degeneration (CBD): application of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS)].

We studied the application of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in a case of corticobasal degeneration. A 73-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for dysarthria and clumsiness in right arm movement. Intelligence was normal and neither ideational apraxia or ideomotor apraxia were observed. Her speech was slurred and extremely slow. Neurological findings showed a limitation of ocular upward gaze movement, impaired smooth pursuit in the horizontal gaze, rigidity, limb kinetic apraxia and cortical sensory disturbance in the right arm. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed di

Object motion perception during ego-motion: patients with a complete loss of vestibular function vs. normals.

Object motion perception was assessed in avestibular patients and normal controls. Two experiments were conducted, in which subjects were required to assess the motion of a visual stimulus with respect to earth. In the first experiment, we measured the velocity at which a briefly presented (200 ms) grating was perceived as earth fixed, while the subject maintained fixation on a visual target fixed relative to the body, during whole-body yaw rotation (VOR suppression). In this experimental setup, the influence of the semicircular canal signals on object motion perception was evaluated. The aves

Otoneurologic disturbances caused by solvent pollution.

Subjects exposed to industrial solvents may experience vertigo and nausea. Solvents are usually volatile hydrocarbon compounds, which are important parts of everyday life in a modern society. They may also cause neurastenia, personality changes, and reduced intellectual capacity. The syndrome that may develop was formerly named psycho-organic syndrome (POS), but in modern terminology it is called chronic toxic encephalopathy (CTE). The syndrome develops slowly, and during the first years no pathological findings will be found using various test batteries. Somewhat later, when the syndrome stil

Anterior segment dysgenesis with bilateral acorea and microphthalmia associated with compound heterozygous FOXE3 pathogenic variants: outcomes after optical iridectomy.

BACKGROUND: FOXE3-related anterior segment dysgenesis produces a spectrum of severe ocular malformations, and bilateral congenital acorea is a rare presentation within that spectrum. Management is complicated when standard visual function tests, such as flash VEP, fail to record. PATIENT: A 1 month old boy with bilateral microphthalmia and congenital acorea underwent slit lamp exam, ultrasound biomicroscopy, B scan ultrasonography, flash VEP, and MRI. Whole exome sequencing was performed to identify a genetic cause. RESULTS: Whole exome sequencing identified compound heterozygous FOXE3 varia

2D Nanomaterials Toward Function-Ready Superlubricity in Advanced Microsystems.

The rapid evolution of micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems defines a new frontier of intelligent miniaturization, where interfacial friction and wear emerge as the fundamental bottlenecks limiting functional reliability and energy efficiency. Two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials with van der Waals layered structures have redefined the pursuit of superlubricity, where the interfacial potential corrugation is minimized by lattice incommensurability, and energy dissipation is further suppressed through phonon spectrum mismatch and charge-mediated coupling at the sliding interface. These atomis

Adult-onset ocular flutter-opsoclonus spectrum across diverse neurological disorders: a video-oculographic case series.

BACKGROUND: Ocular flutter and opsoclonus are rare ocular motor disorders most often associated with paraneoplastic or autoimmune conditions, although their full aetiological spectrum in adults remains incompletely defined. Because the distinction between ocular flutter and opsoclonus may be challenging using routine video-oculographic tracings alone, the broader term flutter-opsoclonus spectrum is used in this study. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case series of adult patients evaluated between September 2024 and February 2026 at a tertiary neurology centre, in whom high-frequency sac

Gasotransmitters and noble gases in cardioprotection: unraveling molecular pathways for future therapeutic strategies.

Despite recent progress, ischemic heart disease poses a persistent global challenge, driving significant morbidity and mortality. The pursuit of therapeutic solutions has led to the emergence of strategies such as ischemic preconditioning, postconditioning, and remote conditioning to shield the heart from myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury (MIRI). These ischemic conditioning approaches, applied before, after, or at a distance from the affected organ, inspire future therapeutic strategies, including pharmacological conditioning. Gasotransmitters, comprising nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, s

[Neuro-otological Studies of Patients Suffering from Dizziness with Cerebrospinal Fluid Hypovolemia after Traffic Accident-associated Whiplash Injuries].

Vertigo and dizziness are common clinical manifestations after traffic accident-associated whiplash injury. Recently, Shinonaga et al. (2001) suggested that more than 80% of patients with whiplash injury complaining of these symptoms showed cerebrospinal (CSF) hypovolemia on radioisotope (RI) cisternography (111In-DTPA). However, neuro-otological studies to investigate the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying these symptoms have been insufficient. In the present study, patients complaining of these symptoms with CSF hypovolemia after traffic accidents were investigated with posturography a

A new approach to predicting postconcussion syndrome after mild traumatic brain injury based upon eye movement function.

Following on from our earlier findings of a close relationship between motor function and outcome after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), this study examined whether it might be possible to predict poor recovery in the form of postconcussion syndrome (PCS) based upon early eye and arm motor function. Within 1 week post-injury, we assessed 37 mTBI patients on measures of saccades, oculomotor smooth pursuit, upper-limb visuomotor function, neuropsychological status, and self-reported health condition. At 3 months, 8 patients met the criteria for PCS. Using discriminant function analyses, we ex

EYE movement abnormalities in Parkinson's disease: optometric screening and rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasingly recognized as a multisystem disorder in which eye movement abnormalities provide important diagnostic and prognostic insights. OBJECTIVE: This review synthesizes current evidence on oculomotor disturbances in PD, their clinical relevance, and their potential as biomarkers for early detection and disease monitoring. METHODS: A structured narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases (up to July 2025). Although a systematic search strategy was applied, findings were synthesized narratively due to heterogen

Vestibular findings in sensorineural hearing disorders. Results of caloric, oculomotor and hearing tests in 205 patients with unilateral hearing dysfunction.

In 205 patients with unilateral hearing loss, 117 of cochlear and 88 of retrocochlear origin, thorough audiovestibular examinations were performed to establish the occurrence and severity of vestibular dysfunction. The results were also analysed with the aim of determining the relationships between the severity of the hearing loss, the etiology and the topical location of the hearing disorder, on the one hand, and vestibular dysfunction, recorded as reduced caloric sensitivity and occurrence of oculomotor disturbances, on the other. No correlation was found between severity of hearing loss and

Effect of intrapulmonary tetrahydrocannabinol administration in humans.

This randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, cross-over study was designed to identify which pharmacodynamic parameters most accurately quantify the effects of delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the predominantly psychoactive component of cannabis. In addition, we investigated the acceptability and usefulness of a novel mode of intrapulmonary THC administration using a Volcano vaporizer and pure THC instead of cannabis. Rising doses of THC (2, 4, 6 and 8 mg) or vehicle were administered with 90 minutes intervals to twelve healthy males using a Volcano vaporizer. Very low between-subject

Using the Modified Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening Tool to Identify Blast Exposure Effects in Military Service Members.

INTRODUCTION: Military service members training with heavy weapons systems are exposed to low-level blast (LLB) overpressure, sometimes resulting in acute symptoms similar to mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). There is a need for a quick and effective screening tool to identify early deficits and changes associated with blast exposure and minimizing potential ensuing effects. Recently, researchers developed the modified Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening (mVOMS), designed to assess signs and symptoms of mTBI. modified Vestibular/Ocular Motor Screening consists of four physical movement conditi

Do Initial Symptom Factor Scores Predict Subsequent Impairment Following Concussion?

OBJECTIVE: Symptom factors present during the first week following concussion may predict subsequent concussion outcomes and recovery duration. We hypothesized that a high loading on cognitive-fatigue-migraine and somatic factors would be predictive of neurocognitive impairment following concussion. We also hypothesized that the affective factor would be related to vestibular symptoms and impairment. DESIGN: Prospective repeated measures. SETTING: Concussion specialty clinic. PARTICIPANTS: Athletes aged 13 to 20 years diagnosed with a concussion within the past 7 days. INDEPENDENT VARIABLE

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex during whole body yaw rotation in standing subjects: the role of head position and neck proprioception.

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were studied during whole body yaw rotation in the dark at different static head positions. Rotations consisted of four cycles of symmetric sinusoidal and asymmetric oscillations. Self-motion perception was evaluated by measuring the ability of subjects to manually track a static remembered target. VOR was recorded separately and the slow phase eye position (SPEP) was computed. Three different head static yaw deviations (active and passive) relative to the trunk (0°, 45° to right and 45° to left) were examined. Active head deviations had

Cognition and motor control as a function of Delta9-THC concentration in serum and oral fluid: limits of impairment.

Cannabis use has been associated with increased risk of becoming involved in traffic accidents; however, the relation between THC concentration and driver impairment is relatively obscure. The present study was designed to define performance impairment as a function of THC in serum and oral fluid in order to provide a scientific framework to the development of per se limits for driving under the influence of cannabis. Twenty recreational users of cannabis participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, three-way cross-over study. Subjects were administered single doses of 0, 250 and 500 mi
