Edge Modes on Stringy Horizons.

For a quantum field of arbitrary mass and spin in the static patch of de Sitter spacetime, the Euclidean partition function receives contributions from edge modes localized on the horizon, expressible in terms of the Harish-Chandra character of the de Sitter group. Considering the flat limit and summing over all string fields, we obtain the partition function of edge modes in string theory near the Minkowski-Rindler horizon. Application of the Kronecker limit formula naturally yields a modular invariant one-loop partition function. The resulting expression generalizes the edge contribution of

Semiclassical analytic theory of multi-channel electronic energy transfer in nonadiabatic atomic collisions.

The semiclassical theory of nonadiabatic energy transfer [Adamovich and Rich, J. Chem. Phys. 160, 194101 (2024)] is extended to include multi-channel electronic excitation and quenching in three-dimensional atomic collisions. The transition probabilities, cross sections, and rate coefficients predicted by the theory are compared with high-fidelity quantum scattering predictions for N + N, using state-of-the-art ab initio interaction potentials and nonadiabatic couplings, and with a few available experiments. The theory predictions are in good agreement with quantum scattering, both for conditi

High-precision calculation of the quark-gluon coupling from lattice QCD.

The outcomes of modern particle physics experiments, such as proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), depend crucially on the precise description of the scattering processes in terms of the fundamental forces. Among all the known forces that contribute, the limited understanding of the strong nuclear force is a key source of inaccuracy. At the fundamental level, the strong force is described by quantum chromodynamics, the theory of quarks and gluons. Their coupling, αs, becomes weaker at high energies (asymptotic freedom), enab

Survival of the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in Orbital Magnetic Fields as a Consequence of the Parity Anomaly.

Recent experimental progress in condensed matter physics enables the observation of signatures of the parity anomaly in two-dimensional Dirac-like materials. Using effective field theories and analyzing band structures in external out-of-plane magnetic fields (orbital fields), we show that topological properties of quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators are related to the parity anomaly. We demonstrate that the QAH phase survives in orbital fields, violates the Onsager relation, and can be therefore distinguished from a quantum Hall (QH) phase. As a fingerprint of the QAH phase in increasing

Buried Unstrained Germanium Channels: A Lattice-Matched Platform for Quantum Technology.

Strained germanium ( ε $\varepsilon$ -Ge) and strained silicon ( ε $\varepsilon$ -Si) buried quantum wells have enabled advanced spin-qubit quantum processors. However, in the absence of suitable lattice-matched substrates, ε $\varepsilon$ -Ge and ε $\varepsilon$ -Si are deposited on defective, metamorphic SiGe buffers, which may impact device performance and scaling. Here an alternative platform is introduced based on the heterojunction between bulk unstrained Ge and a lattice-matched strained silicon-germanium ( ε $\varepsilon$ -SiGe) barrier, eliminating the need for metamorphic buffer

Regio- and Enantioselective Oxidation of Eicosapentaenoic and Arachidonic Acids by Human CYP2E1: A Comparative Mechanistic Study.

Human CYP2E1 oxidizes both eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, an ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid [PUFA]) and arachidonic acid (AA, an ω-6 PUFA) to bioactive lipid mediators, yet the mechanistic basis for its regio- and enantioselective preferences remains incompletely understood. Here, we use a combined molecular dynamics (MD) and hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) strategy to compare the oxidation of EPA and AA by human CYP2E1 at atomistic resolution. MD simulations indicate that EPA and AA occupy essentially the same CYP2E1 cavity but are stabilized through distinct interaction pat

The error theory of LLM consciousness: there is no evidence that standard LLMs are conscious.

Are chatbots AI zombies or conscious minds? I suspect they are AI zombies, at least when implemented on today's standard hardware. I argue that today's Large Language Mode's (LLM's) consciousness-like behaviors do not suggest they are conscious, because there is an error theory - a theory explaining why they behave as if they are conscious in absence of actual felt experience. LLMs function as "crowdsourced neocortices" - as they scale up, they come to mirror human conceptual structures, leading to human-like behaviors, including those involving consciousness. By contrast, bio-computers, quant

Magnetic graphs for cavity quantum electrodynamics.

Strengthening light-matter coupling has become a central challenge in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), enabling ultrafast gate operations, qubit protection, and deterministic nonlinear optics. As the coupling increases, even the simplest configuration-an atom interacting with a quantized field-requires careful treatment, as exemplified by ongoing debates on quantum Rabi models (QRMs). Here we propose a magnetic graph model for single-atom cavity QED that offers a unified description of quantum dynamics from the weak- to the ultrastrong-coupling regime via graph connectivity. We demonstrat

Resolving Energy Transfer Dynamics at the Quantum Dot Gels-Perylene Diimide Hybrid Interface.

Semiconductor-molecular hybrids provide a platform for controlling excited-state transfer in photocatalysis and optoelectronics. While quantum dots (QDs) are promising semiconductors, they are often capped with surface ligands that limit accessibility and hinder coupling with molecular species. QD gels are a porous three-dimensional network of QDs that can address the limitations of QDs, making them especially advantageous for semiconductor-molecular hybrid systems; however, excited-state transfer dynamics remain largely unexplored. Here, we report energy transfer dynamics from a CdS QD gel to

Magnetic geometry induced quantum geometry and nonlinear transports.

The combination of quantum geometry and magnetic geometry in magnets excites diverse phenomena, some critical for antiferromagnetic spintronics. However, very few material platforms have been predicted and experimentally verified to date, with the material pool restricted by the assumed need for strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Here, we bypass the need for SOC by considering magnetic order induced quantum geometry and corresponding nonlinear transports (NLTs) in antiferromagnets (AFMs). By integrating spin space group theory into the symmetry analysis, we find that collinear and coplanar magn

The fine-structure constant as a scaled quantity.

The fine-structure constant α≈1/137 is traditionally regarded as a fundamental dimensionless parameter. I argue instead that α is a scaled quantity that arises only where the structural scales contributed by classical electromagnetism (e), quantum mechanics (ħ), and special relativity (c) intersect. None of these theories, taken individually, supplies the independent scales required to define α. The constant first appears when relativistic corrections are added to the Schrödinger-Bohr description of hydrogen (Sommerfeld), and it becomes the structural coupling in quantum electrodynamics, where

Demonstration of the Holonomically Controlled Non-Abelian Geometric Phase in a Three-Qubit System of a Nitrogen Vacancy Center.

The holonomic approach to controlling (nitrogen-vacancy) NV-center qubits provides an elegant way of theoretically devising universal quantum gates that operate on qubits via calculable microwave pulses. There is, however, a lack of simulated results from the theory of holonomic control of quantum registers with more than two qubits describing the transition between the dark states. Considering this, we have been experimenting with the IBM Quantum Experience technology to determine the capabilities of simulating holonomic control of NV-centers for three qubits describing an eight-level system

Are randomized controlled trials (RCTs) redundant for testing the efficacy of homeopathy? A critique of RCT methodology based on entanglement theory.

INTRODUCTION: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have yet to deliver unequivocal results demonstrating the efficacy (or otherwise) of homeopathic remedies and individualized homeopathic prescribing. This could be caused by an implicit assumption inherent in RCT methodology that specific effects of a remedy and any nonspecific effects of consultation are independent of each other. Reported here is a theoretical investigation of the consequences arising from this assumption proving to be false. METHODS: A previously developed theoretical model of entanglement in homeopathy between patient, pra

Sample-Based Quantum Diagonalization Methods for Modeling the Photochemistry of Diazirine and Diazo Compounds.

Diazirines and diazo compounds are widely employed as photoreactive precursors for generating carbenes, key intermediates in chemical biology and materials science. However, computationally modeling their reaction pathways remains challenging due to the need for large active spaces and the requirement to accurately capture excited-state surfaces along with transition states and conical intersections. In this work, we utilize a hybrid quantum-classical workflow for investigating carbene formation in representative diazirine-diazomethane systems. Our approach leverages Sample-based Quantum Diago

Density functional and experimental study of NO/O2 on zigzag char.

In this paper, quantum chemistry computation (density functional theory) of multi-air-staged combustion was investigated in combination with experiment. It was found that the presence of oxygen in the combustion environment has a great influence on the surface chemistry of coal char. In the reaction pathway, the ring-opening reaction happens first, and is followed by NO adsorption. Afterwards, the ring-closure reaction takes place, leaving the nitrogen atom trapped in the inner char molecule. This reaction route effectively inhibits NO formation and achieves the aim of controlling NO emissions

Total angular momentum conservation in Ehrenfest dynamics with a truncated basis of adiabatic states.

Ultra-strong spin-orbit coupling and topological moiré engineering in twisted ZrS2 bilayers.

We predict that twisted bilayers of 1T-ZrS2 realize a novel and tunable platform to engineer two-dimensional topological quantum phases dominated by strong spin-orbit interactions. At small twist angles, ZrS2 heterostructures give rise to an emergent and twist-controlled moiré Kagome lattice, combining geometric frustration and strong spin-orbit coupling to give rise to a moiré quantum spin Hall insulator with highly controllable and nearly-dispersionless bands. We devise a generic pseudo-spin theory for group-IV transition metal dichalcogenides that relies on the two-component character of th

Anisotropic hydrogen diffusion in α-Zr and Zircaloy predicted by accelerated kinetic Monte Carlo simulations.

This report presents an accelerated kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) method to compute the diffusivity of hydrogen in hcp metals and alloys, considering both thermally activated hopping and quantum tunneling. The acceleration is achieved by replacing regular KMC jumps in trapping energy basins formed by neighboring tetrahedral interstitial sites, with analytical solutions for basin exiting time and probability. Parameterized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the accelerated KMC method is shown to be capable of efficiently calculating hydrogen diffusivity in α-Zr and Zircaloy, without a

Are QM/MM models systematically improvable? A case study on carbonic anhydrase binding affinities.

Hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) is the method of choice for modelling large biochemical systems, but their performance depends critically on how they are implemented. This paper examines the sensitivity of QM/MM enzyme-ligand binding energy predictions to key parameters, including QM region size, the incorporation of thermal and solvation effects as well the use of docked poses versus crystal structures. The focus is on carbonic anhydrase which has emerged as an important drug target for a wide variety of pathologies. It is demonstrated that trends in binding affinities ar
