PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent reports have reiterated the inequities in maternal morbidity and mortality for minority ethnic groups, with preecl … those of minority ethnic groups. The reasons for this are multifactorial but underlying biases and racism have been attributed as major contributors to poor care and adverse outcomes.
SUMMARY: Exploring disparities in preeclampsia care is essential to address ethnic inequities that lead to increased adverse outcomes. We must alter current clinical prac …

INTRODUCTION: Racial discrimination has been identified as a risk factor for cardiometabolic diseases, the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among racial/ethnic minority groups; however, there is no synthesis of current knowledge on the association between discrimination and cardiometabolic diseases. The objective of this systematic review was to summarize evidence linking racial/ethnic discrimination and cardiometabolic diseases.
METHODS: The review was conducted based on studies identified via electronic searches of 5 databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, WorldWideScience.org, ResearchG

PURPOSE: To examine the relationships between individual-level perceived racial/ethnic discrimination and mental health and substance use outcomes by school-level racial composition among American Indian (AI) adolescents.
METHOD: Self-reported survey data on individual-level variables come from a sample of AI adolescents (n = 510) living in or near the Cherokee Nation during the fall of 2021. School-level data come from publicly available databases. Multilevel linear and logistic regression analyses were performed to test for and examine the interaction between perceived racial/ethnic discrim

For decades, Black mothers have been most likely to suffer the worst outcomes of pregnancy, including death. Even though traditional individual level risk factors do not explain racial inequities in maternal morbidity, most studies identify Black race as a predictor, instead of the ways in which our society is structured around racism that makes Black mothers vulnerable to adverse health outcomes. As an example, the U.S is exceptional in incarcerating its residents, and Black men are six times and Black women are three times more likely than their white counterparts to be incarcerated. Related…

As one of the most racially/ethnically diverse workplaces in the United States, the Department of Defense (DoD) has been on the forefront in driving diversity initiatives. Yet, racial/ethnic harassment and discrimination (REHD) in the military persist and threaten mission readiness. Despite this, limited research exists identifying factors that influence REHD in the U.S. military that could be leveraged for prevention and intervention. In this study, we sought to identify how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) factors in the workplace are associated with REHD in order to identify potential

INTRODUCTION: As anti-immigrant hostility toward Latino populations grows, more fervent attention is needed to consider strength-based approaches to attenuate the effects of perceived discrimination. This systematic review synthesizes the evidence about the effects of racial/ethnic discrimination on mental, physical, and health behaviors of Latinos and examines the coping mechanisms and cultural factors that attenuate the negative association between discrimination and health among adult Latinos living in the United States.
METHOD: The search criteria included articles that (a) examined ethni

Schoolchildren with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience physiologic and psychologic stress that can affect school functioning, mental well-being, and physical health. Student needs are unique and individualized; however, school nurses can support students and families with SCD through comprehensive and thorough care planning efforts. In addition to components specific to individual prescriptions and other nonpharmacological therapies, school nurses should consider school access and inclusion, pain management, racism, and disease self-management when care planning. As a healthcare provider who…

This study examined associations between race-based discrimination and substance use among a predominantly minority sample of male youth, ages 13-19, residing in under-resourced neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Youth completed in-person, anonymous electronic surveys about their lifetime experiences with race-based discrimination and past 30-day tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use. Logistic regression models examined associations between race-based discrimination, measured as a sum of each discriminatory experience endorsed and by each individual discriminatory experience, and past 30

BACKGROUND: For much of the 20th century, the South African mining industry had a statutory compensation system for pneumoconiosis and tuberculosis characterized by gross racial inequality. This study examines the impact of inflation over the period 1973-2024 on the real value of miners' lung disease compensation, including the effect of the dropping of formal racial discrimination after 1993.
METHODS: Sources of information included legislation, government reports, notices, and Gazettes, and mining industry reports.
RESULTS: From 1973 to 1993, high rates of inflation hollowed out the value

Social threat is both a source and consequence of implicit bias against Asian Americans, who are often stereotyped as "perpetual foreigners," posing some threat to (white) American values. The implicit nature of these attitudes makes investigating anti-Asian bias difficult as self-report and behavioral data suffer from social desirability and learning effects. To investigate implicit social threat in anti-Asian bias, we presented participants with a passage critical of American values, purportedly written by a white American (ingroup) or by an Asian American author (outgroup). We utilized elec

Up to 40 % of individuals who sustain traumatic injuries are at risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the conditional risk for developing PTSD is even higher for Black individuals. Exposure to racial discrimination, including at both interpersonal and structural levels, helps explain this health inequity. Yet, the relationship between racial discrimination and biological processes in the context of traumatic injury has yet to be fully explored. The current study examined whether racial discrimination is associated with a cumulative measure of biological stress, the gene expression

Racial inequity in mental health care quality is influenced by many systems-level factors, as elucidated by critical race theory, structural competency, and other keystone frameworks.1 A growing body of literature also suggests provider-level bias to be a key driver.1-3 There is specific evidence that racism is an important driver of health inequities among youth4 and that it is mediated, in part, by provider-level processes related to diagnosis and treatment.2 For example, in child and adolescent psychiatry, youth who are Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) experience disproportion…

Ethnic/racial discrimination is associated with negative psychosocial outcomes, and this study considered sleep disturbance as a mediating pathway. Employing a combination of daily diary and biannual surveys, multilevel structural equation models estimated the indirect effects of sleep/wake concerns on negative, anxious, and positive mood, rumination, and somatic symptoms. In a sample of 350 urban Asian (74% Chinese, 8% Korean, 4% Indian, 1% Filipinx, 1% Vietnamese, and 12% other), Black, and Latinx (25% Dominican, 24% South American, 22% Mexican, 15% Puerto Rican, 5% Central American, and 9%

In the United States, women are over-represented and Blacks are under-represented as living kidney donors. A traditional bioethics approach would state that as long as living donors believe that the benefits of participation outweigh the risks and harms (beneficence) and they give a voluntary and informed consent, then the demographics reflect a mere difference in preferences. Such an analysis, however, ignores the social, economic and cultural determinants as well as various forms of structural discrimination (e.g., racism, sexism) that may imply that the distribution is less voluntary than m…

UNLABELLED: Emerging evidence suggests that vicarious racial experiences of discrimination may negatively influence child health. Few studies have focus on childhood asthma symptoms and potential moderators of such relationship.
METHODS: We used two population-based cross-sectional studies from the Social Change Allergy and Asthma in Latin America project in Salvador, Brazil. A total of 1003 children and mothers interviewed in 2006 were included, of whom 873 were reached again in 2013. Vicarious racial discrimination was assessed in mothers by applying the Experiences of Discrimination scale.

Understanding both the impact and intersection of race in the criminal justice system is critical to understanding cyclical factors driving the disproportionate minority incarceration rate. Through the Critical Race Theory (CRT) lens, this article examines race and the criminal justice system by reviewing specific aspects of the legal system and its arbitrary application of the system's significant discretionary power, which is a major influencer in the disparate incarceration rates for people of color. The Sentencing Project reports that racial disparity the criminal justice system exists whe

The recently reported cases of coerced sterilisation of women at a privately operated immigration detention facility in the USA are egregiou … have remained particularly vulnerable to sterilisation abuse. The intersectional vulnerabilities of racism, xenophobia and carcerality must be addressed to prevent such abuses from recurring.

Three widely discussed explanations of the punitive carceral state are racism, harsh drug laws, and prosecutorial overreach. These three narratives, however, only partially explain how our correctional system expanded to its current overcrowded state. Neglected in our discussion of mass incarceration is our largely forgotten history of the long-term, wholesale institutionalization of the disabled. This form of mass detention, motivated by a continuing application of eugenics and persistent class-based discrimination, is an important part of our history of imprisonment, one that has shaped key …
