Effects of ionising radiation exposure in offspring and next generations: dosimetric aspects and uncertainties.

PURPOSE: The impact of the exposure to ionizing radiation in the offspring and next generation has been investigated in the last decades and currently is the subject of study of the ICRP Task Group 121. Studying the effects of radiation exposure in pre-conceptional and post-conceptional phases can be a challenge since potential effects to the fetus vary depending on the stage of fetal development. Epidemiology and radiobiology studies are the two sources of information one can use to correlate the radiation dose to the human body and tissues and the resulting effects. For a proper evaluation o

Radiation processing of bacterial cellulose-monolaurin wound dressing: Physicochemical effects, functional analysis, and sterilization.

A commercial bacterial cellulose-monolaurin wound dressing was investigated for changes in the chemical structure, mechanical strength, thermal degradation, morphology, and functional swelling properties after exposure to gamma and electron beam radiations at doses 15-50 kGy. Radiation-induced oxidation occurred as seen in the FT-IR peaks at 1720-1750 cm-1. Degradation of the cellulosic network was observed in tensile strength reduction and shift in degradation temperature to lower values. The SEM cross-section images of the irradiated dressings revealed a less dense nanostructure network comp

Exploring the hormetic effects of radiation on the life table parameters of Spodoptera frugiperda.

BACKGROUND: Spodoptera frugiperda, a global agricultural pest, can be effectively controlled through the sterile insect technique. However, exposure to low-dose radiation below the sterilization threshold may induce hormetic effects. Here, the biphasic aspects of the fertile progeny population of S. frugiperda were analyzed using an age-stage, two-sex life table after dosing male and female pupae with 10-350 Gy gamma radiation. RESULTS: The parental sterilizing dose for 6-day-old female and male pupae was 200 and 350 Gy, respectively. The total longevity, pre-adult survival rate, net reproduc

Enhanced hair growth effects through low-level vortex beams radiation: An experimental animal study.

Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is a non-invasive and pain-less treatment for hair loss. Researches on PBMT rarely considered the impact of different light structures. In this study, we irradiated shaven rats with both 650 nm, m = 32 vortex beams and ordinary Gaussian beams. The laser treatment was performed at 24-hour intervals for 20 days. The energy density was set to 4.25 J/cm2 . The results indicated that low-level vortex beam irradiation led to better stimulation of hair growth than the Gaussian beams, which might be related to deeper penetration. The underlying biological mechanisms a

Comparison of effects of dexmedetomidine and amifostine against X-ray radiation-induced parotid damage.

Radiotherapy can be employed as a therapeutic modality alone in the early stages of cancer and is used together with other treatments such as surgery and chemotherapy in more advanced stages. However, exposure to ionizing radiation in association with radiotherapy affects several organs in the head and neck and can give rise to early and late side effects. Exposure to ionizing radiation used in radiotherapy is known to cause cell damage by leading to oxygen stress through the production of free oxygen radicals (such as superoxide radicals, hydroxyl radical, hydrogen peroxide, and singlet oxyge

Dichotomous effects of in vivo and in vitro ionizing radiation exposure on lymphatic function.

On the one hand, lymphatic dysfunction induces interstitial edema and inflammation. On the other hand, the formation of edema and inflammation induce lymphatic dysfunction. However, informed by the earlier reports of undetected apoptosis of irradiated lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs) in vivo, lymphatic vessels are commonly considered inconsequential to ionizing radiation (IR)-induced inflammatory injury to normal tissues. Primarily because of the lack of understanding of the acute effects of IR exposure on lymphatic function, acute edema and inflammation, common sequelae of IR exposure, have

Late radiation effects in survivors of head and neck cancer: State of the science.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common neoplasms. Radiotherapy (RT) plays an essential role in the management of such cases. Despite advances in the technique, hyposalivation, xerostomia, dysphagia, trismus, radiation caries, and osteoradionecrosis remain significant late complications of RT. The aim of this narrative review was to summarize and update the main findings related to late side effects of radiotherapy in survivors of head and neck cancer (HNC). Such effects limit the ability to speak, ingest food and medications, and breathe and also exert a negative impac

Regional radiation dose susceptibility within the parotid gland: effects on salivary loss and recovery.

PURPOSE: Xerostomia is one of the most likely late toxic effects of radiotherapy treatment in patients with head-and-neck cancers. Modern treatment techniques can incorporate knowledge of complication risk into treatment plans. To this end, the authors attempt to quantify the regional radiotherapy dose-dependence of salivary output loss and recovery in a prospective study. METHODS: Salivary output was collected from patients undergoing radiotherapy treatment for head-and-neck cancers at the BC Cancer Agency between February 2008 and May 2013. Regional dose-dependence (i.e., dose susceptibilit

Assessment of the Radiation Effects of Cardiac CT Angiography Using Protein and Genetic Biomarkers.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether radiation exposure from cardiac computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is associated with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage and whether damage leads to programmed cell death and activation of genes involved in apoptosis and DNA repair. BACKGROUND: Exposure to radiation from medical imaging has become a public health concern, but whether it causes significant cell damage remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study in 67 patients undergoing cardiac CTA between January 2012 and December 2013 in 2 U.S. medical c

Effects of UV-B radiation on germlings of the red macroalga Nemalion helminthoides (Rhodophyta).

Studies have clearly demonstrated the damaging effects of UV-B exposure on macroalgae, but few have reported the impact of UV-B on spore germination and development at juvenile stages. Therefore, this work aimed to analyze the effects of UV-B radiation on germlings of Nemalion helminthoides at the tetrasporophytic phase. To accomplish this, germlings of N. helminthoides were cultivated in the laboratory and separated into two groups. The control group was exposed onlyto photosynthetic radiation, while the treatment group was exposed to photosynthetic radiation + UV-B for 2 hours during a perio

The genome-wide effects of ionizing radiation on mutation induction in the mammalian germline.

The ability to predict the genetic consequences of human exposure to ionizing radiation has been a long-standing goal of human genetics in the past 50 years. Here we present the results of an unbiased, comprehensive genome-wide survey of the range of germline mutations induced in laboratory mice after parental exposure to ionizing radiation and show irradiation markedly alters the frequency and spectrum of de novo mutations. Here we show that the frequency of de novo copy number variants (CNVs) and insertion/deletion events (indels) is significantly elevated in offspring of exposed fathers. We

Analyses of ionizing radiation effects in vitro in peripheral blood lymphocytes with Raman spectroscopy.

The use of Raman spectroscopy to measure the biochemical profile of healthy and diseased cells and tissues may be a potential solution to many diagnostic problems in the clinic. Although extensively used to identify changes in the biochemical profiles of cancerous cells and tissue, Raman spectroscopy has been used less often for analyzing changes to the cellular environment by external factors such as ionizing radiation. In tandem with this, the biological impact of low doses of ionizing radiation remains poorly understood. Extensive studies have been performed on the radiobiological effects a

Mechanical loading causes site-specific anabolic effects on bone following exposure to ionizing radiation.

During spaceflight, astronauts will be exposed to a complex mixture of ionizing radiation that poses a risk to their health. Exposure of rodents to ionizing radiation on Earth causes bone loss and increases osteoclasts in cancellous tissue, but also may cause persistent damage to stem cells and osteoprogenitors. We hypothesized that ionizing radiation damages skeletal tissue despite a prolonged recovery period, and depletes the ability of cells in the osteoblast lineage to respond at a later time. The goal of the current study was to test if irradiation prevents bone accrual and bone formation

Radiation-induced cytogenetic and hematologic effects on aquatic biota within the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

During 1998-2014 the rate of chromosomal aberrations in embryo tissues of the pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) and root meristems of higher aquatic plants, and also hematologic indexes of mantle liquid of the adult snails and peripheral blood of fishes in water bodies within the Chernobyl exclusion zone (EZ) was studied. The absorbed dose rate for hydrobionts from water bodies of the EZ registered in a range from 0.25 to 420 μGy h(-1) and in the reference ones - up to 0.09 μGy h(-1). The level of chromosomal aberrations in the molluscs from the most contaminated water bodies of the EZ was regist

Effects of human amnion-derived mesenchymal stromal cell transplantation in rats with radiation proctitis.

BACKGROUND AIMS: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) have been reported to be a promising cell source in cell therapy, and large amounts of MSCs can easily be isolated from human amnion. Therapeutic irradiation for intra-pelvic cancer often causes radiation proctitis; however, there is currently no effective treatment. We therefore investigated the effect of transplantation of human amnion-derived MSCs (AMSCs) in rats with radiation proctitis. METHODS: Amnion was obtained at cesarean delivery, and AMSCs were isolated and expanded. Sprague-Dawley rats were γ-irradiated (5 Gy/d) at the rectum for

Effects of acute gamma radiation on the reproductive ability of the earthworm Eisenia fetida.

Earthworms are the most suitable biological indicators of radioactive pollution because they are the parts of nutritional webs, and are present in relatively high numbers. Four months old Eisenia fetida were exposed to different doses of gamma radiation, namely 1, 2, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 & 60 Gy to study the effects of radiation on different reproductive parameters. The number of cocoons laid and the hatchlings emerged were recorded for all the selected doses. There was no reduction in cocoon production, however; decreasing size and weight of the cocoons was observed fr
