Derivation and validation of a urinary excretion function for plutonium based on occupational exposure.

Formation of a three-component urinary excretion function using the data of occupational exposure cases is described. Measurement results of plutonium inhalation from two subjects over 6000 and 2500 d are used in the derivation of this function. The three-component excretion function obtained is U(t) = 0.0008e(-0.0566(t)) + 0.00009e(-0.0042(t)) + 0.00004e(-0.00008(t)). The function is therefore proposed as a reliable basis to make an uptake assessment for operational control for mixed class of plutonium dominated by M-class chronic exposure.

Radiation exposure from diagnostic radiographs in extremely low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to examine radiation doses received by infants of less than 750 g birth weight from radiographs. METHODS: We examined the radiology records, including radiograph films, of all 25 surviving infants with birth weight less than 750 g admitted to our center during 1991. The standard method of neonatal radiation dose calculation was modified to consider the body size, postnatal growth, and extramedullary hematopoiesis of the extremely low birth weight infant. To determine overall radiation exposure, we calculated an effective dose equivalent, which is the sum of weighed organ

Real-World Accuracy of a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System after Radiologic Exposure.

BACKGROUND: The increasing use of continuous glucose monitor (CGM) necessitates a review of variables that impact accuracy and interrupt use. Manufacturer recommendations include removing CGMs before diagnostic imaging, such as X-ray and computed tomography (CT). Early removal and replacement of CGM components present financial, clinical, and psychosocial burdens to the wearer and interrupt optimal management of diabetes for pediatric patients who receive a total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT). The study's aim was to evaluate the effect of scatter dose exposure during X-

Assessment of DNA damage in lymphocytes of workers exposed to X-radiation using the micronucleus test and the comet assay.

The mutagenic and carcinogenic effects of genotoxic agents on exposed people have constituted an increasing concern. Therefore, the objective of this work was to assess DNA damage in lymphocytes of workers exposed to X-radiation using the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus test and the comet assay (single-cell gel electrophoresis), and to compare these two techniques in the monitoring of exposed populations. The cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus test and the comet assay were employed in the monitoring of 22 workers occupationally exposed to X-radiation in a hospital in southern Brazil. The freque

Twenty five years of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine - progress and priorities for future of radiation medicine and biology.

After the creation of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine in 1993 the Research Center for Radiation Medicine was among the first institutions to join the Academy (fig. 1). Estab lishing the Academy was among the first steps of the independent Ukrainian government and aimed to provide a high level health care for population. It was extremely needed for the minimization of Chornobyl medical consequences. This choice was related to a growing recognition of the scientific research in fulfilling the Сenter's mission - study of the effects of low dose radiation on human body and radiation pro

Cytogenetic study in lymphocytes from children exposed to ionizing radiation after the Chernobyl accident.

The present study concerns the monitoring of children from the Byelorussian, Ukrainian and Russian republics exposed to the fall-out of the Chernobyl accident. Cytogenetic analyses have been performed on 41 children coming from different areas and exhibiting varying amounts of 137Cs internal contamination, as evaluated by whole-body counter (WBC) analysis. On a total of 28,670 metaphases scored, radiation-induced chromosome damage is still present, although at a very low frequency. Due to the very low fraction of dicentrics, because of the time elapsed from the accident and the relatively low

Microsurgical resection of vestibular schwannomas: complication avoidance.

Vestibular schwannoma (VS) surgery requires appropriate patient selection, meticulous microsurgical technique and optimal post-operative care. Focused radiation is an effective alternative for the treatment of smaller VSs. For VS surgery to remain a reasonable option, surgery must be performed with a limited number of complications. Complication rates for VS surgery have increased over the last decade. This is likely due to (1) decreased surgical volume and as a result decreased microsurgical experience, (2) larger tumors undergoing surgery while smaller tumors are reserved for radiation, and

Precision-Arranged DNA Origami Plasmonic Nanoantennas for Multidimensional Smart-Warning of Weightlessness Induced Bone Loss.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) shows promise for monitoring health during space missions, particularly in assessing the effects of microgravity and radiation. However, traditional SERS sensors struggle with precise interfacial engineering, leading to a relatively poor assembly efficiency, and are unable to meet the practical needs of extreme spaceflight environments. To address this, it is designed and fabricated precision-arranged DNA origami plasmonic nanoantennas. By leveraging DNA origami's addressability, it is built a 3 × 4 antenna array with a controlled spacing of 21.76 nm, e

Application of whole-body personal TL dosemeters in mixed field beta-gamma radiation.

Application of whole-body personal TL dosemeters based on a high-sensitivity LiF:Mg,Cu,P (MCP-N) in mixed field beta-gamma radiation has been characterised. The measurements were carried out with (90)Sr/(90)Y, (85)Kr and (137)Cs point sources to calculate the energy response and linearity of the TLD response in a dose range of 0.1-30 mSv. From the result, calibration curves were obtained, enabling the readout of individual dose equivalent Hp(10) from gamma radiation and Hp(0.07) from beta radiation in mixed field beta-gamma. Limitation of the methodology and its application are presented and d

Role of imaging in the evaluation of inflammatory bowel disease: How much is too much?

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a lifelong condition with waxing and waning disease course that requires reassessment of disease status as well as screening for complications throughout a patient's lifetime. Laboratory testing, endoscopic assessment, and fecal biomarkers are often used in the initial diagnosis and ongoing monitoring of a patient with IBD. Imaging plays an integral role in the diagnosis and evaluation of IBD. Different imaging modalities can be used over the course of a patient's lifetime, from the initial screening and diagnosis of IBD, to determining the extent of intesti

[A case of occupational ultraviolet cataract caused by magnetic particle testing].

Magnetic particle testing, as an efficient non-destructive testing method, has been widely applied in the field of defect detection for precision components. This study reports a case of occupational ultraviolet cataract caused by prolonged exposure of a magnetic particle testing worker to ultraviolet radiation exceeding standard intensity levels. Insufficient awareness of the potential ocular damage caused by long-wave ultraviolet radiation, inadequate provision of protective goggles, and non-compliant occupational hygiene monitoring and health examinations were identified as the primary cont

Risks of radiation exposure to orthopaedic surgeons.

The risks of occupational radiation exposure for orthopaedic surgeons has not been well documented. The use of fluoroscopy in orthopaedics has reduced morbidity and by reducing operative time and by reducing the invasiveness of procedures. Increasingly procedures requiring the use of fluoroscopy are being developed. In a prospective study we have monitored cumulative radiation exposure over a 6-month period. The exposure levels are well below the maximum dose limits for ionizing radiation as recommended by European Economic Communities EURATOM directives. Experimentally using a phantom patient

Radiation protection concepts and quantities for the occupational exposure to cosmic radiation.

For the purposes of dose limitation and dose control, the harm, or detriment, of exposure to radiation is assessed by the quantity effective dose. Effective dose is evaluated by the application of factors to the averaged absorbed dose in the organs and tissues of the body. Radiation monitoring instruments are generally calibrated in terms of the quantity ambient dose equivalent which is defined in a simple spherical phantom. The relationship of these quantities is described. Requirements for the radiation protection of aircraft crew are given in the European Union Council Directive 96/29/EURAT…

An evaluation of radiation exposure from portal films taken during definitive course of pediatric radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Recently, considerable attention has been directed toward computed tomography radiation doses (estimated 1 to 4 cGy) received by pediatric patients, because of the potential for increasing a pediatric patient's risk for developing a secondary malignancy. However, minimal attention has been given to the radiation exposure outside the treatment field resulting from the use of portal films to visualize surrounding anatomy. The objective of this study was to quantify the radiation dose from portal imaging delivered within and outside the radiation treatment field during a course of radiat
