PURPOSE: Scales for rating acute radiation dermatitis (ARD) have not been validated despite decades of clinical use, and little is known regarding the relationship between toxicity scores and patient-reported symptoms. Skin tone also complicates assessment of ARD, and as such we sought to design an illustrated scale to consistently describe ARD across several skin tone types in breast cancer patients undergoing radiation (RT).
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients undergoing RT for breast cancer were enrolled on a prospective study with photographs obtained at 2-week intervals. Photographs were clu

We assessed safety and potential efficacy of a chamomile gel compared with urea cream to prevent acute radiation dermatitis in head and neck cancer patients. We assessed safety and potential efficacy of the chamomile gel in escalating concentrations of 2.50%, 5.00% and 8.35% of chamomile. Concentration of 8.35% was chosen for a randomized trial comparing chamomile gel (8.35%) with urea cream (n = 24 per group), for potential efficacy to delay or prevent radiation dermatitis in these patients. Preliminary results demonstrate a delayed onset of dermatitis, with onset of Grade 2 dermatitis at 5.1

PURPOSE: This review aimed to assess the quality and efficacy of tools currently used in breast cancer patients to score radiation dermatitis (RD), a common debilitating side effect of radiotherapy (RT).
METHODS: A search was conducted through Ovid Medline, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases on 14 February 2020. English articles that evaluated an instrument's use in assessing RD among breast cancer patients receiving external beam RT were included. Studies that reported on the reliability, validity, or concordance of items between assessment tools were includ

Proton beam radiotherapy (PBT) represents a rapidly expanding modality for the treatment of several malignancies. We examined the current state of PBT for breast cancer to evaluate its role in the modern era of breast radiotherapy. Systematic searches were performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and abstracts from the American Society for Radiation Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and Particle Therapy Co-Operative Group of North America annual meetings, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Nine original investigations were analyzed. D

Radiation-induced skin injuries to patients in interventional procedures have been reported since the early 1990s, but the number reported is far less than what might be occurring around the world. There is a gross lack of awareness resulting in patients suffering. A case of severe injury observed in multiple percutaneous coronary interventions for chronic total occlusion is reported in this paper. Further, the paper summarises the existing knowledge on radiation dosimetry in interventional procedures, factors involved in skin injury, guidance on detection, and avoidance and management of inju

Radiation-induced fibrosis (RIF) is an uncommon complication of radiation therapy. RIF most often occurs in the extremities; it is rare in the head and neck. Only a few medical treatments for RIF are available, and they have been mediocre at best. We describe a case of RIF of the face that was treated successfully with a nonmedical modality: manual compression therapy.

Radiation-induced skin reactions occur commonly in clinical practice and cause various problems for the patient. Assessment and treatment of these reactions is an important part of the healthcare professional's role in the radiotherapy unit. To accomplish this effectively a specific, yet comprehensive, measuring tool is needed. The first article in this three-part series (Vol 8(17): 1134-40) examined the phenomenon of radiation-induced skin reactions, including descriptions of how radiotherapy affects the skin and the prevalence and significance of these skin reactions. Using the literature, t

The radiation-induced fibrosis is a late sequela of both therapeutic and accidental irradiations, and has been described in several tissues such as skin and underlying sub-cutaneous tissues, and lung. Based on the newest findings arising from cellular and molecular radiobiology, this review synthesis different aspects of the human superficial radiation-induced fibrosis: clinical and paraclinical observations, radiobiological aspects, gross histological changes, cellular and molecular regulations, and medical management. However, the underlying mechanisms of the superficial radiation-induced fi
