Effectiveness of the Neuroimaging Techniques in the Recognition of Psychiatric Disorders: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of RCTs.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging has helped us learn about the stages of brain development from infancy to maturity. Neuroimaging helps physicians diagnose mental illnesses and find novel treatments for them. It can distinguish depression from neurodegenerative diseases or brain tumors, and it can reveal structural defects that cause psychosis. Psychosis has been linked to lesions in the frontal or temporal lobes of the brain, as well as the thalamus and hypothalamus, which can be detected using a brain scan for mental illnesses. Neuroimaging uses quantitative and computational methods to explore the

Virtual reality-based interventions for the rehabilitation of vestibular and balance impairments post-concussion: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries are the most common causes of physical and cognitive disability worldwide. Concussion can result in post-injury vestibular and balance impairments that can present up to five years post initial concussion event, ultimately affecting many daily and functional activities. While current clinical treatment aims to reduce symptoms, the developing use of technology in everyday life has seen the emergence of virtual reality. Current literature has failed to identify substantial evidence regarding the use of virtual reality in rehabilitation. T

Expectancy in placebo-controlled trials of psychedelics: if so, so what?

Modern psychedelic research remains in an early phase, and the eventual introduction of psychedelics into clinical practice remains in doubt. In this piece, we discuss the role of blinding and expectancy in psychedelic trials, and place this in a broader historical and contemporary context of blinding in trials across the rest of healthcare. We suggest that premature and uncritical promotion ('hype') of psychedelics as medicines is not only misleading, but also directly influences participant expectancy in ongoing psychedelic trials. We argue that although psychedelic trials are likely to sign

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound for the treatment of tremor.

INTRODUCTION: Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is an emerging treatment for tremor and other movement disorders. An incisionless therapy, it is becoming increasingly common worldwide. However, given MRgFUS' relative novelty, there remain limited data on its benefits and adverse effects. AREAS COVERED: We review the current state of evidence of MRgFUS for tremor, highlight its challenges, and discuss future perspectives. EXPERT OPINION: Essential tremor (ET) has been the major indication for MRgFUS since a milestone randomized controlled trial (RCT) in 2016, with substant

Efficient and robust approaches for analysis of sequential multiple assignment randomized trials: Illustration using the ADAPT-R trial.

Personalized intervention strategies, in particular those that modify treatment based on a participant's own response, are a core component of precision medicine approaches. Sequential multiple assignment randomized trials (SMARTs) are growing in popularity and are specifically designed to facilitate the evaluation of sequential adaptive strategies, in particular those embedded within the SMART. Advances in efficient estimation approaches that are able to incorporate machine learning while retaining valid inference can allow for more precise estimates of the effectiveness of these embedded reg

Systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials on open angle glaucoma.

Evidence for the effectiveness of interventions to prevent the progression of optic nerve damage in open angle glaucoma has evolved over the last 25 years. We describe that evolution through the systematic reviews on various aspects of the topic and how those reviews have highlighted the need for new trials. Though we can be confident that lowering pressure does indeed reduce the risk of progression, we still lack good evidence on the comparative effectiveness of different treatments not so much on lowering pressure but on preventing progression of the disease. This is true for different medic
