The dimethylamine (DMA) concentration in the gastrointestinal tract of Wistar male rats fed a commercial diet containing 23.6 mg/kg DMA was highest (11.2 +/- 2.1 mg/kg) in the stomach and decreased from the upper region to the lower region. In contrast, the highest DMA concentration (6.6 +/- 2.5 mg/kg) in the upper small intestine was observed in rats fed a low-DMA diet containing 1.0 mg/kg DMA. Two doxycycline derivatives Doxycycline polyphosphate and Doxycycline hydrochloride were administered to rats at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight. Doxycycline tissue levels were determined using a microbiological assay. Only an insignificant fraction of the antibiotics was found to cross the blood brain barrier. In 2 out of 390 carotid bodies of rats arteriovenous anastomoses (AVA) have been found. Both cases belonged to a group of 12 glomera carotici which were prepared using the semithin section technique. The AVA were found in the course of branches of the glomic arteries leaving the main vessel before its entrance into the carotid body tissue. Satellite cells quantitated in the rat soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles following a complete regeneration returned to "normal" percentages of myofiber nuclei in both muscles 3 months after injury. Following cross-transplantation, the percentage of satellite cell nuclei in the EDL regenerated in the soleus bed was indistinguishable from the percentage in the soleus. Examination of morphology and iron deposition in pulmonary tissue from rats loaded with parenteral iron demonstrated a significant increase (compared to controls) of iron in pleural lining cells. No significant differences were noted in iron deposition in macrophages or in lung parenchyma. These results suggest that the pleural surface may represent an unrecognized target tissue in hemochromatosis.

Inoculation of Escherichia coli into the ventral lobe of the rat prostate produced positive bacterial cultures in the expressed fluid of all three lobes of the rat prostate for a prolonged period of time. Orchiectomy at the time of bacterial inoculation significantly shortened the interval of positive bacterial cultures in the prostate expressate.

In both normal and hypophysectomized rats, electroconvulsive shock (ECS) produced a significant postictal rise in seizure threshold (S.T.) to flurothyl, a volatile convulsant.
