Waste heat promoted ammonia recovery from sludge lysate using a MES-TMCS system: thermal-electric-microbial synergies.

Sludge lysate from low-temperature pyrolysis is rich in high ammonia and waste heat (<100 °C), yet its conversional treatment is energy- and chemical- intensive. Microbial electrochemical systems (MES) coupled with ammonia recovery technologies have shown considerable potential for nitrogen recovery, but remain untested for such thermally impacted wastewaters. Here, an MES coupled with a transmembrane capture system (MES-TMCS) was applied to sludge lysate to investigate the ammonia recovery performance and underlying mechanisms under controlled temperature (25-45 °C). The best performance was

Concussion Recovery in Children and Adolescents: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Concussion is a common injury among children and adolescents, with a growing body of literature supporting a variety of diagnostic and treatment modalities. Recovery is variable and depends on multiple factors that can be evaluated through a clinic visit: a thorough history, physical examination, and use of the Post-concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS). PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors associated with overall recovery from concussion in children and adolescents in the clinical setting. It was hypothesized that the presence of 1 of a number of pre- o

Use of Non-Thermal Plasma as Postoperative Therapy in Anal Fistula: Clinical Experience and Results.

Anal fistula, characterized by abnormal tracts between the perianal skin and the anal canal, presents challenges in treatment because of its diversity and complexity. This study investigates the use of non-thermal plasma as a postsurgical therapy for anal fistula, aiming to promote healing and tissue regeneration. A specialized plasma reactor was designed to apply non-thermal plasma within the anorectal cavity practically. Non-thermal plasma treatment was administered to 20 patients including 10 undergoing fistulectomies and 10 undergoing fistulotomies. The average duration of non-thermal plas

Ag Nanoparticles Sensitized In2O3 Nanograin for the Ultrasensitive HCHO Detection at Room Temperature.

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is the main source of indoor air pollutant. HCHO sensors are therefore of paramount importance for timely detection in daily life. However, existing sensors do not meet the stringent performance targets, while deactivation due to sensing detection at room temperature, for example, at extremely low concentration of formaldehyde (especially lower than 0.08 ppm), is a widely unsolved problem. Herein, we present the Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) sensitized dispersed In2O3 nanograin via a low-fabrication-cost hydrothermal strategy, where the Ag NPs reduces the apparent activation en

Recovery and Growth Potential of Listeria monocytogenes in Temperature Abused Milkshakes Prepared from Naturally Contaminated Ice Cream Linked to a Listeriosis Outbreak.

The recovery and growth potential of Listeria monocytogenes was evaluated in three flavors of milkshakes (vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate) that were prepared from naturally contaminated ice cream linked to a listeriosis outbreak in the U.S. in 2015, and were subsequently held at room temperature for 14 h. The average lag phase duration of L. monocytogenes was 9.05 h; the average generation time was 1.67 h; and the average population level increase per sample at 14 h was 1.14 log CFU/g. Milkshake flavors did not significantly affect these parameters. The average lag phase duration of L. mono

Improved procedure for the quality control of Hypericum perforatum L.

A new, fast and reliable procedure for the quantification of the major compounds of Hypericum perforatum L. has been developed. Four naphthodianthrones (protopseudohypericin, pseudohypericin, protohypericin, hypericin) and two phloroglucinols (hyperforin, adhyperforin) were assayed by HPLC using a short (17 min) linear gradient, with hypericin and hyperforin as external standards. Extraction of dried plant material with methanol in the dark at room temperature for 2 h led to a complete recovery of phloroglucinols but only a partial recovery of the naphthodianthrone derivatives. Treatment of pl

[Anesthetic management of a patient with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome].

The Freeman-Sheldon syndrome is a rare congenital myopathy and dysplasia that results in deformity of the face, hands, and feet. We describe here some problems in general anesthesia from the anesthetic management point of view. An 8-year-old girl with Freeman-Sheldon syndrome underwent surgery under general anesthesia for the correction of lip deformity and microstomia. Patients with this syndrome may present anesthetic problems involving difficulties in endotracheal intubation due to microstomia, micrognathia and neck rigidity, as well as postoperative respiratory complications and problems t

Monoclonal antibody 55 (CD10) and complement used for purging autologous bone marrow in common acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

A CD10 monoclonal antibody 55 (McAb55) was intended for purging residual common acute lymphoblastic leukemia antigen (CALLA) positive leukemic cells from autotransplants of common acute lymphoblastic leukemia (C-ALL) patients. It was found that after two rounds of McAb55 and complement treatment, 4-5 logs of CALLA+ cells were removed from bone marrow detected by clonogenic assay. The standardization of separation, purgation and preservation of bone marrow for C-ALL patients' autotransplants was then set as follows: Following the carboxymethyl starch sedimentation and Ficoll-Hypaque gradient se

Guidelines on analgosedation, monitoring, and recovery time for flexible bronchoscopy: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing bronchoscopy in spontaneous breathing are prone to hypoxaemia and hypercapnia. Sedation, airway obstruction, and lung diseases impair respiration and gas exchange. The restitution of normal respiration takes place in the recovery room. Nonetheless, there is no evidence on the necessary observation time. We systematically reviewed current guidelines on bronchoscopy regarding sedation, monitoring and recovery. METHODS: This review was registered at the PROSPERO database (CRD42020197476). MEDLINE and awmf.org were double-searched for official guidelines, recommend…

Residual paralysis: a real problem or did we invent a new disease?

PURPOSE: Over the past three decades, many studies have shown a high proportion of patients in the recovery room with residual neuromuscular blockade after anesthesia. The purpose of this Continuing Professional Development module is to present the physiological consequences of residual paralysis, estimate the extent of the problem, and suggest solutions to prevent its occurrence. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Residual paralysis is defined as a train-of-four ratio (TOFR) < 0.9 at the adductor pollicis. While tidal volume and, to a lesser extent, vital capacity are well preserved as the intensity of blo…

Humidity-resilient room-temperature NO2 sensing enabled by epitaxial single-crystalline Bi2WO6 ultrathin films.

The development of embedded and distributed artificial olfaction systems requires gas sensors that combine low-power operation, miniaturization, environmental robustness, and scalable fabrication. Here, we demonstrate that epitaxial single-crystalline Bi2WO6 (BWO) ultrathin films can simultaneously achieve room-temperature NO2 sensing, high selectivity, and strong humidity resilience, which is a combination rarely reported for perovskite oxide thin films. By decoupling the effects of thickness and crystalline quality, sensor responses are correlated with key morphological parameters via a quan

Glucose-Derived Circular Thermoset Platform Breaks the Industrial Trilemma of Recyclable Structural Polymers.

The long-standing trilemma of scalable green synthesis, industrial processing compatibility, and balanced performance-circularity represents the core barrier limiting real-world deployment of recyclable thermosets. Here, we report an exogenous catalyst- and solvent-free one-pot strategy with ∼100% atom economy to fabricate glucose-derived built-in dynamic covalent thermosets from three industrial bulk feedstocks: glucose, maleic anhydride, and pentaerythritol tetrakis(3-mercaptopropionate). The optimal formulation achieves an unprecedented balance between >130 d of room-temperature shelf life

Determination by UHPLC-QTOF-HRMS of Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in Dried Blood Spots: Method Validation and Practical Application of a Rising Alcohol Abuse Biomarker With Minimally Invasive Sampling.

The goal of our study was to develop and validate a simple, quick, and sensitive method to detect phosphatidylethanol (PEth) in dried blood spots (DBS). A 30-μL aliquot of blood was collected on a DBS card and allowed to dry at room temperature. Then, the spot was cut and transferred into a clean tube where the internal standard (PEth-D5) and 1-mL hexane were added followed by stirring, sonication, and centrifugation at room temperature. The dried supernatant was reconstituted with 30-μL acetonitrile and analyzed by UHPLC-HRMS-QTOF. Calibration curve was created at 20, 50, 100, 200, 300, and 5

First-principles insights into the C6N7 monolayer as a highly efficient sensor and scavenger for the detection of selective volatile organic compounds.

The design of new gas sensors and scavengers of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is desirable for VOC enriching, separation and utilization. Herein, first-principles methods were performed to investigate the potential of C6N7 monolayers as highly efficient sensors and scavengers for selective VOCs (toluene, benzene, vinyl chloride, ethane, methanal, acetone, ethanol, and acetaldehyde). The physisorption of toluene, benzene, acetone, ethanol, acetaldehyde, and methanal has relatively high adsorption strength and can significantly tune the electronic properties and work function (Φ) of the C6N7

Incubation Temperature and Period During Denarase Treatment and Microfiltration Affect the Yield of Recombinant Adenoviral Vectors During Downstream Processing.

Adenoviral vectors (AV) are commonly used as vaccine and gene therapy vehicles because of their ease of construction, ability to grow to high titers in the large-scale production process, and safety for human applications. However, the efficiency rate of downstream processes for adenoviral vectors still varies greatly. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the effect of the downstream treatment protocol and microfiltration of the harvested upstream material on viral vector yield. We compared the performance of the repeated freeze-thaw (RFT) and the Tween-20 detergent lysis (DLT) method
