Bacterial Lipopolysaccharide Post-Conditioning in The kainic acid animal model of Temporal Lobe epilepsy.

This study used intra-hippocampal injections of Kainic Acid (KA) in Wistar rats to induce spontaneous recurrent seizures (SRS) after a 9-day latent period. A post-conditioning protocol with LPS, injected at the same site 72 h after the initial KA insult, was employed to trigger secondary competing processes. To evaluate the post-conditioning effect of LPS, 25 animals were divided into four groups: SAL-SAL (n = 6), KA-SAL (n = 6), SAL-LPS (n = 7), and KA-LPS (n = 6). SRS occurrence and seizure duration were quantified through video monitoring from days 9 to 17, along with other ictal behaviors,

A Novel Approach to Distinguish Parkinson's Disease Patients From Healthy Control Subjects Using Speech-Based Task Analysis.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often exhibit speech and voice impairments early in the disease course, making these characteristics potential biomarkers for diagnosis. Additionally, PD speech analysis offers a promising avenue for monitoring disease progression in response to therapeutic interventions. In this study, we propose a novel method for distinguishing PD patients from healthy controls (HCs) through the analysis of speech task recordings. Our method integrates recurrence plots (RPs) and their corresponding quantitative descriptors with established speech features, namely Mel-s

A Framework for Locally Imputing and Predicting Biomarker Trajectories Under Irregular Monitoring: Application to Chronic Myeloid Leukemia.

Irregular monitoring and missing data limit the utility of longitudinal biomarkers in real-world practice. We developed a generalizable framework that combines interval-aligned preprocessing, localized multiple imputation, and machine-learning forecasting to generate complete trajectories and predict future biomarker values under routine clinical conditions. Using BCR::ABL1 monitoring in chronic myeloid leukemia as a case study, we aligned measurements to 90-day intervals, applied a windowed, uncertainty-propagating imputation strategy, and trained recurrent neural network (RNN) and XGBoost mo

Cognitive dysfunctions in depression - significance, description and treatment prospects.

Cognitive dysfunctions are part of the symptomatology of depressive disorders but they may persist even after the patient reaches symptomatic remission. As persistent symptoms of depression, cognitive dysfunctions may inhibit and restrict the patient's functioning in many spheres and significantly impair its quality. In addition, they increase the risk of somatic diseases and contribute to the increase of benefits disbursed from state aid. Furthermore, it is a factor negatively affecting the prognosis of depressive disorders because it increases the risk of recurrence of depression and reduces

Preoperative Identification of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Subtypes and Lymph Node Metastasis via Deep Learning-Assisted Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy.

Accurate preoperative diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) histological subtypes and lymph node metastasis is essential for formulating personalized treatment strategies. However, their preoperative diagnosis is challenged by the limited reliability of cytological identification of histological subtypes and the low accuracy of lymph node detection using ultrasound imaging. Herein, a deep learning-assisted surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chip is developed for the preoperative diagnosis of PTC histological subtypes and evaluation of lymph node metastasis, using fine-needle asp

A combined deep learning framework for mammalian m6A site prediction.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A) is the most prevalent chemical modification in eukaryotic mRNAs and plays key roles in diverse cellular processes. Precise localization of m6A sites is thus critical for characterizing the functional roles of m6A in various conditions and dissecting the mechanisms governing its deposition. Here, we design a combined framework of Transformer architecture and recurrent neural network, deepSRAMP, to identify m6A sites using sequence-based and genome-derived features. As a result, deepSRAMP achieves a notably enhanced performance compared to its predecessor, SRAMP, the mos

Automated detection of sleep apnea from electrocardiogram signals using nonlinear parameters.

Sleep apnoea is a very common sleep disorder which can cause symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, irritability and poor concentration. To monitor patients with this sleeping disorder we measured the electrical activity of the heart. The resulting electrocardiography (ECG) signals are both non-stationary and nonlinear. Therefore, we used nonlinear parameters such as approximate entropy, fractal dimension, correlation dimension, largest Lyapunov exponent and Hurst exponent to extract physiological information. This information was used to train an artificial neural network (ANN) classifier to ca

Clinical efficacy of NIBS in enhancing neuroplasticity for stroke recovery.

BACKGROUND: For stroke patients, a therapeutic approach named Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) was applied and it has gained attention. This NIBS approach enhances the neuroplasticity and facilitates in functional Stroke Rehabilitation (SR) through regulating the brain activity. This NIBS has several advantages, but, the variability in patient responses, poor personalized treatment plans, and challenges in predicting rehabilitation stages may limit its clinical application. The generalized approaches are usually employed by the current SR methods. Here, the Patient-Centric (PC) factors th

Altered effective connectivity in patients with drug-naïve first-episode, recurrent, and medicated major depressive disorder: A multi-site fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) has been diagnosed through subjective and inconsistent clinical assessments. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) with connectivity analysis has been valuable for identifying neural correlates of patients with MDD, yet most studies rely on single-site and small sample sizes. METHODS: This study utilized large-scale, multi-site rs-fMRI data from the Rest-meta-MDD consortium to assess effective connectivity in patients with MDD and its subtypes, i.e., drug-naïve first-episode (FEDN), recurrent (RMDD), and medicated MDD (MMDD)

Migraine and menopause as converging factors in brain vulnerability: a hypothesis-driven perspective.

Migraine is a highly prevalent neurological disorder with a pronounced female predominance, yet its relationship with brain aging remains incompletely understood. Across the female lifespan, migraine interacts with neuroendocrine transitions, particularly menopause, a period characterized by substantial hormonal, metabolic, and neuroimmune changes. This hypothesis-driven narrative perspective synthesizes evidence across clinical, neuroimaging, and mechanistic domains to explore whether migraine, particularly in chronic or hormonally sensitive forms, may reflect altered neural vulnerability in

An End-to-End CRSwNP Prediction with Multichannel ResNet on Computed Tomography.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a global disease characterized by poor treatment outcomes and high recurrence rates, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. Due to its complex pathophysiology and diverse clinical presentations, CRS is categorized into various subtypes to facilitate more precise diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis prediction. Among these, CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) is further divided into eosinophilic CRSwNP (eCRSwNP) and noneosinophilic CRSwNP (non-eCRSwNP). However, there is a lack of precise predictive diagnostic and treatment methods, making research into acc

Suicidal Ideation Is Associated With Reduced Functional Connectivity and White Matter Integrity in Drug-Naïve Patients With Major Depression.

Depression is a highly prevalent psychiatric disorder affecting millions of people worldwide. Depression is characterized by decreased mood or loss of interest in daily activities, changes in feeding and circadian rhythms and significant impairments in cognitive and executive function. In addition, the occurrence of recurrent thoughts of death and suicidal ideation confers depressed patients a higher risk of suicide than the general population. With this study, we aimed to explore the neural correlates of suicidal ideation in drug-naïve patients diagnosed with depression. Twenty-five patients

The Importance of Lateral Connections in the Parietal Cortex for Generating Motor Plans.

Substantial evidence has highlighted the significant role of associative brain areas, such as the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) in transforming multimodal sensory information into motor plans. However, little is known about how different sensory information, which can have different delays or be absent, combines to produce a motor plan, such as executing a reaching movement. To address these issues, we constructed four biologically plausible network architectures to simulate PPC: 1) feedforward from sensory input to the PPC to a motor output area, 2) feedforward with the addition of an effer

Cognitive Challenges Are Better in Distinguishing Binge From Nonbinge Drinkers: An Exploratory Deep-Learning Study of fMRI Data of Multiple Behavioral Tasks and Resting State.

BACKGROUND: Studies have identified imaging markers of binge drinking. Functional connectivity during both task challenges and resting state was shown to distinguish binge and nonbinge drinkers. However, no studies have compared the efficacy of task and resting data in the classification. HYPOTHESIS: Task outperforms resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data in the differentiation of binge and nonbinge drinkers. We tested the hypothesis via multiple deep learning algorithms. STUDY TYPE: Cross-sectional; retrospective. POPULATION: A total of 149 binge (107 men) and 151

Exploring the Impact of Batch Size on Deep Learning Artificial Intelligence Models for Malaria Detection.

Introduction Malaria is a major public health concern, especially in developing countries. Malaria often presents with recurrent fever, malaise, and other nonspecific symptoms mistaken for influenza. Light microscopy of peripheral blood smears is considered the gold standard diagnostic test for malaria. Delays in malaria diagnosis can increase morbidity and mortality. Microscopy can be time-consuming and limited by skilled labor, infrastructure, and interobserver variability. Artificial intelligence (AI)-based tools for diagnostic screening can automate blood smear analysis without relying on

DOP-2 D2-Like Receptor Regulates UNC-7 Innexins to Attenuate Recurrent Sensory Motor Neurons during C. elegans Copulation.

UNLABELLED: Neuromodulation of self-amplifying circuits directs context-dependent behavioral executions. Although recurrent networks are found throughout the Caenorhabditis elegans connectome, few reports describe the mechanisms that regulate reciprocal neural activity during complex behavior. We used C. elegans male copulation to dissect how a goal-oriented motor behavior is regulated by recurrently wired sensory-motor neurons. As the male tail presses against the hermaphrodite's vulva, cholinergic and glutamatergic reciprocal innervations of post cloaca sensilla (PCS) neurons (PCA, PCB, and
