Baseline metrics that may predict future myopia in young children.

PURPOSE: We used baseline data from the PICNIC longitudinal study to investigate structural, functional, behavioural and heritable metrics that may predict future myopia in young children. METHODS: Cycloplegic refractive error (M) and optical biometry were obtained in 97 young children with functional emmetropia. Children were classified as high risk (HR) or low risk (LR) for myopia based on parental myopia and M. Other metrics included axial length (AXL), axial length/corneal radius (AXL/CR) and refractive centile curves. RESULTS: Based on the PICNIC criteria, 46 children (26 female) were c

Refractive changes during off-the-axis retinoscopy in myopia.

PURPOSE: To analyze the refractive shift during off-the-axis retinoscopy under cycloplegic drugs in myopic patients during ocular examination. METHODS: Prospective cross-sectional study was carried out among 10 myopic patients having refractive errors of -3.00 D or less. All the subjects underwent cycloplegic refraction by a single examiner at 0°, 10°, and 20°. Descriptive data were analyzed as mean and standard deviation. Paired t-test was used to compare the mean differences between on-axis (0°) and off-axis (10° and 20°) retinoscopy. RESULT: The mean spherical equivalent refraction of 10

Visual Acuity Outcomes in a Randomized Trial of Wavefront Metric-optimized Refractions in Adults with Down Syndrome.

SIGNIFICANCE: This study reports visual acuity outcomes from a clinical trial investigating an objective refraction strategy that may provide a useful tool for practitioners needing additional strategies to identify refractive corrections for adults with intellectual disability. PURPOSE: Determining refractions for individuals with Down syndrome is challenging because of the presence of elevated refractive error, optical aberrations, and cognitive impairment. This randomized clinical trial evaluated the performance of spectacle corrections determined using clinical techniques and objective re

Refractive Shifts and Changes in Corneal Curvature Associated With Antibody-Drug Conjugates.

PURPOSE: Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are a class of cancer drug wherein some are associated with corneal abnormalities, but there is a dearth of published information on refractive shifts in patients receiving ADCs. Here, we evaluated the dynamics of refractive error and keratometry readings in patients with ADC-related keratopathy and microcyst-like epithelial changes (MECs). METHODS: This study is a retrospective case series including 58 eyes of 29 patients with ADC-related keratopathy from a single tertiary care cancer referral center (MSKCC). One eye (29 total) was randomly assigned f

Clinical outcomes following the dispensing of ready-made and recycled spectacles: a systematic literature review.

Uncorrected refractive error is the leading cause of global visual impairment. Given resource constraints in developing countries, the gold standard method of refractive error correction, custom-made spectacles, is unlikely to be available for some time. Therefore, ready-made and recycled spectacles are in wide use in the developing world. To ensure that refractive error interventions are successful, it is important that only appropriate modes of refractive error correction are used. As a basis for policy development, a systematic literature review was conducted of interventional studies analy

Study of the wavefront aberrations in children with amblyopia.

BACKGROUND: Amblyopia is a common ophthalmological condition and the wavefront aberrometer is a relatively new diagnostic tool used globally to measure optical characteristics of human eyes as well as to study refractive errors in amblyopic eyes. We studied the wavefront aberration of the amblyopic children's eyes and analyzed the mechanism of the wavefront aberration in the formation of the amblyopia, try to investigate the new evidence of the treatment of the amblyopia, especially in the refractory amblyopia. METHODS: The WaveScan Wavefront System (VISX, USA) aberrometer was used to investi

Spherical aberration in contact lens wear.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present studies was to investigate the effect on spherical aberration of different non custom-made contact lenses, both with and without aberration control. METHODS: A wavefront analyser (Zywave, Bausch & Lomb) was used to measure the aberrations in each subject's right eye uncorrected and with the different contact lenses. The first study evaluated residual spherical aberration with a standard lens (Focus Dailies Disposable, Ciba Vision) and with an aberration controlled contact lens (ACCL) (Definition AC, Optical Connection Inc.). The second study evaluated the

[Epidemiology of refraction abnormalities in Northern Navy young soldiers].

Screening ophthalmological studies were carried out in 2851 soldiers arriving to Northern Navy, in order to detect ocular diseases, refraction abnormalities, and functional disorders. Visual disorders were detected in 529 subjects (19%), refraction abnormalities in 87% of these. Myopia predominated (344 subjects, 66%) in the structure of ophthalmological disorders. Hypermetropia was detected in 114 patients (21%), anisometropia in 85 (16%). Twelve percent of all examinees were in need of optic correction. Epidemiological analysis showed an obvious increase in the prevalence of myopia from Sout

Mechanical methods in refractive corneal surgery.

Over the past decade, keratorefractive surgery has moved into the mainstream of ophthalmology as improved instrumentation and newer techniques have evolved. These new aspects increase the safety and effectiveness of the various keratorefractive procedures. The introduction of new techniques and knife designs has led to improved results with radial keratotomy. The newly developed arcuate keratome purportedly offers the possibility of improving the predictability of arcuate keratotomy. Keratomileusis and epikeratoplasty have been successful for some difficult refractive states, such as aphakia a

Nav1.7 P610T mutation in two siblings with persistent ocular pain after corneal axon transection: impaired slow inactivation and hyperexcitable trigeminal neurons.

Despite extensive study, the mechanisms underlying pain after axonal injury remain incompletely understood. Pain after corneal refractive surgery provides a model, in humans, of the effect of injury to trigeminal afferent nerves. Axons of trigeminal ganglion neurons that innervate the cornea are transected by laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). Although most patients do not experience postoperative pain, a small subgroup develop persistent ocular pain. We previously carried out genomic analysis and determined that some patients with persistent pain after axotomy of corneal axons dur

CLEAR - Orthokeratology.

Orthokeratology (ortho-k) is the process of deliberately reshaping the anterior cornea by utilising specialty contact lenses to temporarily and reversibly reduce refractive error after lens removal. Modern ortho-k utilises reverse geometry lens designs, made with highly oxygen permeable rigid materials, worn overnight to reshape the anterior cornea and provide temporary correction of refractive error. More recently, ortho-k has been extensively used to slow the progression of myopia in children. This report reviews the practice of ortho-k, including its history, mechanisms of refractive and oc
