PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to provide an overview and update on recent literature regarding low-add multifocal intraocular lenses (MFIOLs).
RECENT FINDINGS: Clinical and benchwork studies involving low-add MFIOLs were reviewed. Clinical studies focused on uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near vision, along with secondary dysphotopsias. Studies done in the laboratory assessed the optical properties of various lenses, and optically replicated visual scenarios at different viewing distances.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examines the economic history of refractive surgery and the decline of laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in the USA, and the emergence of refractive cataract surgery as an area of growth.
RECENT FINDINGS: Since it peaked in 2007 at 1.4 million procedures per year, LASIK has declined 50% in the USA, whereas refractive cataract surgery, including presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses (IOLs), astigmatism-correcting IOLs, and femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, has grown to 350 000 procedures per year, beginning in 2003.

PURPOSE: To analyze the reasons for which LASIK was rejected in eyes of patients who requested surgical correction of their refractive errors.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in which data pertaining to refractive and ocular status of 338 patients who presented for refractive surgery at our LASIK facility between November 2002 and December 2003 were reviewed. The reasons for not performing LASIK in cases that were rejected were also noted.
RESULTS: Among the 338 patients who requested refractive surgery, 223 (66%) underwent LASIK; surgery was not performed in 115 (34%) patients.

Photorefractive keratectomy and laser in situ keratomileusis can induce or exacerbate dry eye after surgery. This manifests as an increase in degree and frequency of symptoms, corneal findings, such as superficial punctate keratopathy, and abnormal results of dry eye tests, such as the Schirmer test and tear break-up time.
