Seroprevalence of varicella-zoster virus in five US-bound refugee populations.

Little is known about varicella-zoster virus (VZV) susceptibility in US-bound refugee populations, although published data suggest that VZV seroprevalence in these refugee populations may be lower than US populations. We describe VZV seroprevalence in five US-bound refugee groups: (1) Bhutanese in Nepal, (2) Burmese on the Thailand-Burma (Myanmar) border, (3) Burmese in Malaysia, (4) Iraqi in Jordan, and (5) Somali in Kenya. Sera were tested for presence of VZV IgG antibodies among adults aged 18-45 years. Overall VZV seroprevalence was 97% across all refugee groups. VZV seroprevalence was als

Personality and psychopathology in African unaccompanied refugee minors: repression, resilience and vulnerability.

Examining personality and psychopathological symptoms among unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs), we measured intra-individual dimensions (repression and correlates thereof) usually associated with resilience. Forty-one URMs completed the Weinberger Adjustment Inventory (WAI), assessing personality, and the Youth Self-Report (YSR), describing current symptoms. URMs endorsed high levels of Repressive Defensiveness, Denial of Distress, and Restraint; unexpectedly, URMs reported high Distress and reduced Happiness (WAI, p's < 0.05). Although YSR symptoms were below clinical cut points, there were

Implementation of an interferon-gamma release assay to screen for tuberculosis in refugees and immigrants.

Despite increased use and accuracy of interferon-gamma release assays to detect latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in foreign-born arrivals in the United States, risk characteristics associated with positive results are not well characterized. We conducted a retrospective record review of 541 refugees and immigrants screened for LTBI with QuantiFERON(®)-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-IT) at the Spokane Public Health Clinic from January 2, 2008, through June 5, 2009. Overall, 24 % of the arrivals had a positive QFT-IT, with the greatest frequency of positive results occurring in arrivals from Liberia (…

Malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies among Bhutanese refugee children--Nepal, 2007.

Acute and chronic malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies have been found in refugee camp populations. In southeastern Nepal, despite consistent access by refugees to general rations, certain micronutrient deficiencies have posed a substantial health burden to the approximately 100,000 Bhutanese residing in seven refugee camps. Limited food diversity, frequent illness, and poor feeding practices have been cited as underlying causes of poor nutritional status in this population. Annual surveys to assess levels of acute malnutrition (i.e., wasting) and chronic malnutrition (i.e., stunting) h…

Infertility in a US resettled African refugee: a case report of genital tuberculosis.

A 27-year-old, previously healthy Somali refugee presented with infertility. Cultures of endometrial tissue were positive for fully susceptible tuberculosis and she was diagnosed with genital tuberculosis. After 12 months of antituberculosis therapy, she attempted to become pregnant; however, use of in vitro fertilization and surrogate carrier probably will be needed given the degree of scar tissue present before treatment. Due to the increasing numbers of US-resettled refugees, physicians should consider genital tuberculosis in any refugee woman presenting with infertility or amenorrhea.

Asthma prevalence in children living in villages, cities and refugee camps in Palestine.

Previous studies have suggested that asthma prevalence is generally lower in the Middle East than in more developed countries. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and severity of asthma and asthma symptoms in schoolchildren in the Ramallah District in Palestine. In the autumn of 2000, 3,382 schoolchildren aged 6-12 yrs were surveyed in 12 schools, using the International Study for Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC)-phase III, parents-administered translated questionnaire. The crude prevalence rates for "wheezing-ever", "wheezing in the previous 12 months", and "physi

An outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis in an Afghan refugee settlement in north-west Pakistan.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to Leishmania tropica appears to be an emerging disease in parts of north-east Afghanistan and north-west P … transmission. CL has not been reported from this area of Pakistan before. Although the majority of refugees left Afghanistan 2 decades ago, cross-border movement of men is common. The Afghanistan capital, Kabul, is currently experiencing a major epidemic of CL; infected migrant carriers from Kabul are probably the source of the outbreak in Timargara.

The Indochinese Psychiatry Clinic: trauma and refugee mental health treatment in the 1990s.

The Indochinese Psychiatry Clinic (IPC), located in Boston, was founded in 1981 to meet the special needs of traumatized Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Laotian refugees resettling in the Boston area. Over the past 16 years, IPC has pioneered the field of refugee mental health and the treatment of the psychological and social sequelae of mass violence and torture. IPC developed the bicultural model of psychiatric treatment of refugees suffering from trauma-related mental disorders, which utilizes a multidisciplinary, bicultural team approach that emphasizes understanding the patient's trauma histor…

[An outbreak of Shigella dysenteriae type 1 dysentery in a refugee camp in Rwanda].

As a consequence of the civil war that devastated Burundi in October 1993, more than 300,000 refugees settled in the neighboring country of Rwanda. We describe the outbreak of dysentery due to Shigella dysenteriae type 1 (Sd1) that developed in Nzangwa, a camp hosting some 20,000 Burundese refugees. Between November 17, 1993 and March 10, 1994, 6,122 cases of bloody diarrhea were notified by the health information system of the camp. The overall attack rate was 32.3%, and the fatality rate was 3.8%. Children under five years of age were the most affected group of the population. All dysentery …

Five-year follow-up of Vietnamese refugee children in the United States.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the present physical, mental, and psycho-social health of Vietnamese refugee children. Questionnaires were sent or given to adoptive families, foster families, and Vietnamese children living in the United States with their family units. Otitis media, respiratory ailments, and varicella constituted a large number of their initial medical problems. Severe nightmares and temper tantrums occurred frequently during their first year. It was found that the children's health and emotional problems improved markedly after the first year. Despite stormy pasts

Prevalence of probable posttraumatic stress disorder among Sudanese refugees in Egypt: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The conflict that began in Sudan in April 2023 has displaced over 6.6 million individuals, with hundreds of thousands seeking refuge in Egypt. Displaced populations face significant post-migration stressors that elevate the risk of psychological distress. OBJECTIVES: This pilot study aimed to provide a preliminary estimate of the prevalence of probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Sudanese refugees in Cairo and identify associated sociodemographic risk factors. METHODS: A pilot cross-sectional survey was conducted with 397 Sudanese refugees recruited via convenience…

A latent profile analysis of Germans' threat perceptions, intergroup emotions and attitudes toward refugees.

BACKGROUND: Members of receiving societies respond differently to arriving refugees. Person-centered factors can affect the level of perceived threat by refugees, the intensity of intergroup emotions, and attitudes toward refugees. However, it is largely unknown whether members of receiving societies display distinct profiles reflecting the co-occurrence of cognitive-affective-attitudinal responses and person-centered antecedents toward refugees. METHODS: The current study used latent profile analysis to examine distinct response profiles of Germans without migration background (N = 910). Par…
