Is Behavioural Therapy a New Treatment Option for Task-Specific Dystonia in Athletes? A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Task-specific dystonia is a movement disorder of the central nervous system characterized by focal involuntary spasms and muscle contractions, which can negatively affect performance of a specific task. It can affect a wide range of fine motor skills, also in athletes. Current management of task-specific dystonia includes mainly prescribing drugs, exercise therapy or botulinum injections to the affected muscles. Psychological interventions for athletes suffering from task-specific dystonia have not been described extensively so far. METHODS: We present a case-series of 4 different

Intensified voice therapy: a new model for the rehabilitation of patients suffering from functional dysphonias.

The objective of this study was to evaluate a new intervention for chronic dysphonias, consisting of a 2-week outpatient treatment period using intensified voice therapy combined with elements of physical medicine, including physiotherapy (orthotherapy, detonisation and training of the trunk muscles, respiratory therapy and others), manual therapy (mobilization of the cervical spine), inhalations, vibration massages, thermotherapy, classical massages and active relaxation (e.g. autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation). In addition, the autonomous regulation was influenced by hydrothe

Effect of cognitive-existential group therapy on survival in early-stage breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Cognitive-existential group therapy (CEGT) was developed to improve mood and mental attitude toward cancer in women with early-stage breast cancer receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. Given the debate about group therapy's association with increased survival in women with metastatic breast cancer, we were curious to check its effect at a much earlier stage in the cancer journey. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We randomly assigned 303 women with early-stage breast cancer who were receiving adjuvant chemotherapy to either 20 sessions of weekly group therapy plus three relaxation classes (n = 154) o

A randomized controlled trial of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for treating tinnitus.

UNLABELLED: We conducted a randomized clinical trial to examine the relative effectiveness of two psychological interventions for treating tinnitus. People with tinnitus were initially offered a single session of psychoeducation about tinnitus, followed 2 months later by six weekly sessions of either mindfulness or relaxation training. Results indicated benefits from psychoeducation in reducing negative emotions, rumination and psychological difficulties of living with tinnitus. These effects were maintained or enhanced by mindfulness training that also emphasized acceptance, although they wer

[Stuttering: what does it tell us (body and speech)? What can be proposed (body and psyche)?].

The language can not be broken away from the oral: the actual psychoanalytic conceptions are called again. That allows to approach the stammering in its clinical theoretic aspects. One can consider the relation to the mother, the accession to the spoken word, the voice's wealth and possibilities, the necessity of the listening and of silence, with in all its aspects the emergence of the differences in stammerer subject or not. The links with the body and/or with the corporeal bring the notions on the psyche or psychic reality and permit to understand better the importance of a therapeutic acti

Distraction and relaxation training in the treatment of anticipatory vomiting: a single subject intervention.

A within-series phase change design (ABABC) was used to evaluate the effect of video distraction and relaxation in the treatment of a 29-year-old male with anticipatory vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy. Heart rate, blood pressure, nausea ratings, and the occurrence of emesis were recorded during 18 chemotherapy treatments over a 9 month period. Video distraction initially inhibited vomiting but the treatment effects were not maintained. Subsequent relaxation training inhibited vomiting after two sessions. These effects were maintained for the remainder of the patient's chemotherapy

The thought-stopping technique: a treatment for different types of ruminations?

Thought-stopping, a simple behavioural technique, can be of help in the treatment of different ruminative processes such as ruminations, phobias of internal stimuli, smoking the sexual deviations. After reviewing the research data, although they claim that more controlled studies are mandatory, the authors believe that thought-stopping can be beneficial in clinical practice under certain conditions. They advise clinicians to use the technique described by Wolpe and Lazarus and they discourage the use of relaxation prior to thought-stopping. Tape-recorded instructions are not recommended in ord

Evaluation of equiosmolar 20% mannitol, 3% hypertonic saline and 8.4% sodium bicarbonate on intraoperative brain relaxation and hemodynamic parameters in patients undergoing craniotomy for supratentorial tumors: a prospective randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Research comparing 20% mannitol, 3% hypertonic saline and 8.4% sodium bicarbonate for intraoperative hyperosmolar therapy during supratentorial tumor excision is sparse. With the hypothesis that equiosmolar concentration of these agents will produce equivalent effects, this study was conducted to compare the effects on intraoperative brain relaxation and hemodynamics. METHODS: The prospective study was conducted over a period of one year. Ninety patients, aged 18-60 years, American Society of Anesthesiologists class Ι and ΙΙ with supratentorial tumor and scheduled for surgery were

Comparative Risk of Opioid Overdose With Concomitant Use of Prescription Opioids and Skeletal Muscle Relaxants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The concomitant use of prescription opioids and skeletal muscle relaxants has been associated with opioid overdose, but little data exist on the head-to-head safety of these drug combinations. The objective of this study was to compare the risk of opioid overdose among patients on long-term opioid therapy who concurrently initiate skeletal muscle relaxants. METHODS: We conducted an active comparator cohort study spanning 2000 to 2019 using healthcare utilization data from 4 US commercial and public insurance databases. Individuals were required to have at least 180

Management of chronic tension-type headache with tricyclic antidepressant medication, stress management therapy, and their combination: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: Chronic tension-type headaches are characterized by near-daily headaches and often are difficult to manage in primary practice. Behavioral and pharmacological therapies each appear modestly effective, but data are lacking on their separate and combined effects. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of behavioral and pharmacological therapies, singly and combined, for chronic tension-type headaches. DESIGN AND SETTING: Randomized placebo-controlled trial conducted from August 1995 to January 1998 at 2 outpatient sites in Ohio. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred three adults (mean age,

Around anesthesia: anesthetic aspects of electroconvulsive treatment in the light of the latest reports - review article.

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains the most effective method of treating acute mental conditions in psychiatry. The progress that has been made in anesthesiology in recent years allows for the personalization and optimization of electroconvulsive therapy through purely anesthetic interventions. There are few procedures in medicine where anesthesia would have such a direct impact on the effectiveness, or even success, of a given procedure. A key aspect of electroconvulsive therapy is a selection of the appropriate anesthetic. In Polish conditions, we have a choice of thiopental, propofol,

Characterization of magnetic viral complexes for targeted delivery in oncology.

Oncolytic viruses are promising new agents in cancer therapy. Success of tumor lysis is often hampered by low intra-tumoral titers due to a strong anti-viral host immune response and insufficient tumor targeting. Previous work on the co-assembly of oncolytic virus particles (VPs) with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) was shown to provide shielding from inactivating immune response and improve targeting by external field gradients. In addition, MNPs are detected by magnet resonance imaging (MRI) enabling non-invasive therapy monitoring. In this study two selected core-shell type iron oxide MNPs we

Diagnosis and treatment of myofacial pain-dysfunction (MPD) syndrome.

The successful management of patients with MPD syndrome is dependent on establishing an accurate diagnosis and using proper therapy based on an understanding of the etiology of the disorder. Establishing an accurate diagnosis is accomplished by taking a careful history, doing a thorough examination, and having a knowledge of the various other conditions that can produce signs and symptoms similar to those of MPD syndrome. Using proper therapy is related to recognition that MPD syndrome is a stress-induced psychophysiologic disease originating in the muscles of mastication and not an organic di

Diastolic Function in Normal Sinus Rhythm vs. Chronic Atrial Fibrillation: Comparison by Fractionation of E-wave Deceleration Time into Stiffness and Relaxation Components.

Although the electrophysiologic derangement responsible for atrial fibrillation (AF) has been elucidated, how AF remodels the ventricular chamber and affects diastolic function (DF) has not been fully characterized. The previously validated Parametrized Diastolic Filling (PDF) formalism models suction-initiated filling kinematically and generates error-minimized fits to E-wave contours using unique load (xo), relaxation (c), and stiffness (k) parameters. It predicts that E-wave deceleration time (DT) is a function of both stiffness and relaxation. Ascribing DTs to stiffness and DTr to relaxati

Mechanisms involved in testosterone-induced relaxation to the pig urinary bladder neck.

OBJECTIVES: Testosterone replacement therapy improves bladder capacity in urinary tract dysfunction. There is no information, however, about the role of this steroid hormone on the muscle tension of the bladder outflow region. The current study investigated the mechanisms underlying the testosterone-induced action in the pig bladder neck. METHODS: Urothelium-denuded bladder neck strips were mounted in myographs for isometric force recordings and for simultaneous measurements of intracellular Ca(2+) concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) and tension. The relaxations to testosterone, the non-aromatizable

Brief Post-Surgical Stress Management Intervention Effects on Positive Psychological Well-Being and Self-Efficacy in Women Being Treated With Adjuvant Endocrine Therapy for Hormone-Receptor Positive Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Women prescribed adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) for nonmetastatic breast cancer may experience a decline in positive psychological well-being (PPWB) and self-efficacy. Brief cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and relaxation training (RT) interventions have shown short-term efficacy in reducing distress, but their impact on PPWB and self-efficacy over longer periods among women prescribed AET is unknown. AIMS: We aimed to investigate longitudinal effects of CBT and RT on PPWB and self-efficacy among women prescribed AET. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a randomized controlle
