Lipopolysaccharide preconditioning disrupts the behavioral and molecular response to restraint stress in male mice.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a complex neuropsychiatric disorder potentially influenced by factors such as stress and inflammation. Chronic stress can lead to maladaptive brain changes that may trigger immune hyperactivation, contributing to MDD's pathogenesis. While the involvement of inflammation in MDD is well established, the effects of inflammatory preconditioning in animals subsequently exposed to chronic stress remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of inflammatory preconditioning on behavioral, biochemical, and molecular changes in adult male Swiss mice subjec

Role of CRF1 and CRF2 receptors in the lateral hypothalamus in cardiovascular and anxiogenic responses evoked by restraint stress in rats: Evaluation of acute and chronic exposure.

We investigated the role of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) neurotransmission within the lateral hypothalamus (LH) in cardiovascular and anxiogenic-like responses evoked by acute and repeated restraint stress in rats. For this, animals were subjected to intra-LH microinjection of a selective CRF1 (CP376395) or CRF2 (antisauvagine-30) receptor antagonist before either an acute or the 10th session of restraint stress. Restraint-evoked arterial pressure and heart rate increases, tail skin temperature decrease and anxiogenic-like effect in the elevated plus maze (EPM) were evaluated. We also

Restraint stress increased the permeability of the nasal epithelium in BALB/c mice.

Stress seems to affect the onset and evolution of diverse illnesses with an inflammatory substrate. Whether physiological or psychological, stress increases epithelial permeability. In the mucosa of the nasal cavity and upper respiratory tract, the epithelial barrier is regulated in large part by bicellular and tricellular tight junctions (bTJs and tTJs, respectively). The junctional complexes are composed of multiple membrane proteins: claudins, tight-junction-associated MARVEL proteins (TAMs: occludin, tricellulin and marvelD3), and scaffolding proteins such as ZO-1, -2 and -3. The aim of th

[Induction of Epileptic Seizures in Mouse Models of Chronic Restraint Stress].

Objective To investigate the sensitivity of mouse models of chronic restraint stress to conditions that induce epileptic seizures. Methods Male C57BL/6J mice were randomized into chronic restraint stress(CRS)group and normal control(NC)group. The modeling results were evaluated by sucrose preference test and forced swimming test. Kainic aicd(KA)was intraperitoneally injected to induce acute seizures. Seizure onset time, duration, and scores were recorded and compared. Results During the forced swimming test, the immobility time was(120.9±13.5)s in CRS group and only(59.1±9.8)s in NC group(t=3.700,P

Fatal rhabdomyolysis after torture by reverse hanging.

PURPOSE: Reverse hanging (also known as Palestinian hanging) is a form of positional torture where the victim is suspended for a prolonged period of time by the wrists, after the wrists are bound at the back. We report the first autopsy case of reverse hanging. We have discovered that fatal myoglobinuric renal failure due to rhabdomyolysis can be a complication of Palestinian hanging. METHOD: An adult detainee, who underwent interrogation by authorities, was admitted to hospital from a prison and died in hospital after a few days. Death was due to myoglobinuric renal failure. An autopsy was p

Alterations of Ca(v)1.2 and 5-hydroxytryptamine in rat hearts after positional asphyxia.

We investigated alterations of cardiac Ca(v)1.2 and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) associated with positional asphyxia. Male rats were divided into five groups: a control group with no restraint, group 1 restrained for 1 h, group 2 restrained for 2 h, group 3 restrained for 4 h, and group 4 restrained for 8 h. The rats that were restrained for 8 h ultimately suffered fatal asphyxia. After the restraint periods, the rats were sacrificed and immunohistochemistry was performed to evaluate the expressions of Ca(v)1.2 and 5-HT in the heart. Sections were analyzed by digital image analysis. Cardiac expr

Lactic acidosis in restrained cocaine intoxicated patients.

Severe lactic acidosis has been reported in patients struggling against restraints, especially in association with the use of stimulant drugs, such as cocaine. Profound acidosis occurring under these conditions can lead to cardiac arrhythmias, autonomic instability and cardiac arrest, a syndrome known as restraint associated asphyxia. Early recognition of this condition and removing the stimulus for lactic acid production (excessive muscle activity) by aggressive sedation and ventilatory assistance, coupled with fluid administration to improve tissue perfusion and lactate metabolism, can be li

[Recent progress in research on positional asphyxia of restraint].

Positional asphyxia of restraint means that when an individual was limited in an abnormal body position, asphyxia would take place owing to the disorder of spontaneous respiratory function, and finally it lead to die. So, it belongs to a special type of the mechanical asphyxia. From the cases reported, we could found that it would take place in several conditions. Because the cases were not caused enough recognition, the study has been researched carefully only in recent years. Following the more cases reported, many experts of forensic medicine had investigated it on the mechanism of death an

[Stress-induced inhibition of the ileal, caecal, and colonic contractile activity in rabbits].

In alert rabbits, immobilisation stress decreased the spike burst rate and amplitude in ileum, caecum, and colon for 20 min. Following beta-adrenoceptor blockade, the contractile activity suppression was aggravated. The stress seems to lead to suppression of the ileal, caecal, and colonic contractile activity for up to 40 min which is unrelated to adrenergic inhibition of the smooth muscle activity mediated by beta-adrenoceptors.

Focal neurological complications of handcuff application.

The application of handcuffs may result in compression neuropathies at the wrist. The frequency of these complications is unknown. Twelve of 190 (6.3%) consecutive subjects kept in police custody presented distal neurological symptoms possibly related to handcuff application. The duration of handcuffing was significantly longer in patients with neurological symptoms than in patients without neurological symptoms (mean +/- SD: 3.7+/-5.2 h vs. 1.8+/-2.6 h, P = 0.02). A long duration of handcuff application and, possibly, the existence of somnolence or acute alcohol intoxication could be predispo

The role of background movement in goldfish vision.

In experiments described in the literature objects presented to restrained goldfish failed to induce eye movements like fixation and/or tracking. We show here that eye movements can be induced only if the background (visual surround) is not stationary relative to the fish but moving. We investigated the influence of background motion on eye movements in the range of angular velocities of 5-20 degrees s(-1). The response to presentation of an object is a transient shift in mean horizontal eye position which lasts for some 10 s. If an object is presented in front of the fish the eyes move in a d

Effects of sleep deprivation and other stressors on the immune and inflammatory responses of influenza-infected mice.

Many stressors have well-documented effects on host immune competence. However, two important stressors that have not been extensively characterized in terms of their immune-modulatory properties are sleep deprivation and alterations in light:dark cycles. We therefore evaluated the effects of these stressors on the immune and inflammatory responses of mice inoculated intranasally with influenza virus. In contrast to a previous report, sleep deprivation did not significantly alter viral clearance or antibody titers of either virus-naive or immunized mice. Exposure to constant light also failed

Relationship between gonadal steroids and corticosterone during blood sampling in saker falcons.

Blood sampling in manually restrained or ketamine (15 mg/kg given intramuscularly) treated saker falcons (Falco cherrug) induced an increased concentration in plasma corticosterone. Elevated plasma progesterone, oestradiol 17 beta, and testosterone concentrations also were observed in some of these birds. An inverse relationship was demonstrated between levels of corticosterone and progesterone, but not with the levels of other hormones. It is suggested that progesterone measurement should be taken into consideration when studying the influence of stressors in falcons.

The effects of restraint using self-locking stanchions on dairy cows in relation to behavior, feed intake, physiological parameters, health, and milk yield.

Holstein cows (n = 64) ranging from peak to end lactation were restrained in self-locking stanchions (i.e., head locks) for approximately 4 h/d for four periods in a modified switchback design. Milk yield, milk fat percentage, somatic cell count, and dry matter intake and dry matter intake were unaffected by restraint. Milk protein percentage was significantly lower for cows that were restrained. Plasma cortisol concentrations and the ratio of neutrophils to mononuclear cells were not significantly different between restrained and unrestrained (control) cows. No difference in the incidence of
