Fundus reflectometry of the cat retina showed that under certain circumstances a rapid increase in density may follow intense bleaching exposures. The spectral characteristics of the density changes indicated that neither rhodopsin nor its bleach products could be responsible for this effect. A histological examination was carried out on the eye of an eleven-year-old patient who, like his brother, was suffering from the lung variety of the Osler syndrome. The examination showed rubeosis of the iris accompanied by secondary glaucoma. One striking feature was extensive proliferous retinopathy presumably caused by chronic lack of oxygen in the arterial blood.

The levels of rhodopsin and opsin were investigated in relation to the maintenance of retinal structure in retinas of vitamin A--deficient rats in low levels of cyclic illumination (1.5 to 2 foot-candles). Rhodopsin levels decreased in the deficient retinas to approximately 20% of control at 9 weeks, and this level was retained through 39 weeks on the deficient diet. The ultrastructural effects of dark, light, and low temperature were investigated in the cone cell endings of the red-eared turtle (Pseudemys scripta elegans). Thin sections revealed that in dark-adapted retinas maintained at 22 degrees C, the neural processes which contact the cone cells at the invaginating synapses penetrated deeply into the photoreceptor endings. Atrophy of the nerve fibres in the retina visible by direct ophthalmoscopy using red-free illumination, together with corresponding scotomata in the visual fields, signified retrograde degeneration of retinal nerve fibres from multiple sclerosis. Defects in medullated retinal nerve fibres were continous with arcuate nerve fibre bundle defects. These myelin defects exemplify secondary demyelination of optic axons.
