Long-term changes in the choroidal thickness in patients with unilateral central retinal vein occlusion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the long-term changes in the choroidal thickness in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) following anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment. This retrospective study included 41 eyes from 41 patients with treatment-naïve unilateral CRVO. We compared the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT), and central macular thickness (CMT) of CRVO eyes with those of fellow eyes at baseline, 12 months, and 24 months. Baseline SFCT was significantly higher in CRVO eyes than in fellow eyes (p < 0.001); however, t…

Role of the choroidal vascularity index in branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) with macular edema.

PURPOSE: To assess choroidal vasculature changes in eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and macular edema (ME) using the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and evaluate the effectiveness of CVI as a prognostic biomarker. METHODS: 35 patients with monocular BRVO and ME were analyzed retrospectively. Luminal and stromal areas in choroids of swept-source optical coherence tomography were calculated using the image binarization technique. The CVI was calculated as the ratio of the luminal to total choroidal area. The CVI of BRVO and ME eyes were compared with that of the unaffected fell…

Creation of Retinal Vein Occlusion Model in Cynomolgus Monkeys and Determination of its Pathological Features.

OBJECTIVE: A retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a relatively common retinal vascular disorder, especially in the elderly. Many experiments have been performed on patients with an RVO but performing any type of experiments and especially longitudinal experiments on humans is difficult, if not impossible, on ethical grounds. Therefore, we have created a retinal vein occlusion (RVO) model by laser irradiation of cynomolgus monkeys after intravenous injection of rose bengal. We evaluated the pathological changes of the retina, and the effects of ranibizumab, an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor…

Central retinal vein occlusion in a patient on hemodialysis secondary to antiphospholipid syndrome: Case report.

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) is one of the most common retinal vascular disease. Macular edema associated is responsible of the major decrease in visual acuity. The main causes often implicated are high blood pressure and diabetes. Other etiologies should be sought including CRVO secondary to antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). This rare etiology is associated with a poor prognosis when late diagnosed. Owing to the high associated mortality, early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary. We describe a case of APS complicated by a catastrophic antiphospholipid syndrome in a patient w…

Plasma homocysteine levels, methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase A1298C gene polymorphism and risk of retinal vein thrombosis.

There are limited data regarding the role of methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) A1298C polymorphism and hyperhomocysteinemia as risk factors for retinal vein thrombosis (RVT) in Iranians. This study aimed to examine a possible association between fasting plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) levels, MTHFR A1298C polymorphism and RVT development in Iranian patients. Our study population consisted of 73 patients with a diagnosis of RVT (52.7 ± 16.2 years) and 73 age and sex-matched healthy controls (49.1 ± 14.6 years). Genotyping for the MTHFR A1298Cpolymorphism was conducted by PCR-RFLP te…

Poor outcomes despite aspirin or statin use in high-risk patients with retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: Since atherosclerosis contributes to the pathophysiology of retinal vein occlusion (RVO), we aimed to assess the effects of aspirin and statins on the visual outcomes of RVO in high-risk patients, whom we define to have hypertension and open-angle glaucoma prior to RVO. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective case-control study of adults diagnosed with RVO between 2006 and 2014. To evaluate for a preventive effect of these medications, we compared the prevalence of aspirin or statin use (either separately or concomitantly) among high-risk patients who developed RVO and among those who …
