OBJECTIVE: To study the outcome and complications of thyroid surgery.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: Regional hospital, Hong Kong.
PATIENTS: Three hundred and twelve patients (266 women and 46 men) underwent thyroid surgery between January 1994 and December 1999.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the treatment results of bilateral alveolar bone grafting (BABG) in patients with bilateral complete clefts of lip and palate.

Clinical, macroscopic, and histologic features of 12 lymphangiosarcomas in cats are described. Nine tumors were located in the subcutaneous tissue at the caudoventral abdominal wall (eight cats) or in the neck (one cat). A retrospective study of noncardiac thoracic surgery in children (age < 16 years) comprised 126 patients consecutively operated on over a 10-year period. The surgical procedures included chest-tube insertion for neonatal pneumothorax in 33 children, 12 of whom died within 5 days after birth. Primary intrathoracic disorders were treated in 55 cases, mainly congenital pulmonary malformations in the youngest and traumatic conditions in the oldest. This retrospective study comprising 37 patients with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy undergoing 56 general anaesthesias shows that 1) no atypical reactions occurred when suxamethonium was omitted, that 2) wherever atypical reactions were observed they were always preceded by the use of halothane and suxamethonium. Haemodynamic instability and intubation difficulties were the major complications encountered. Preoperative optimization and cautious anaesthetic practice avoiding suxamethonium and preferably also avoiding potent inhaled anaesthetics is recommended.

The profile of colic occlusions has been drawn from sixty two (62) observations made at the Surgical Clinic between 1970 and 1984. The male sex was slightly more affected (3 men for 2 women) with the age of the patients ranging from 19 to 82 years. Eyelid retraction in an adult occurs usually secondary to Graves' ophthalmopathy, but in children the diagnosis is often obscure. To our knowledge, there are no reports reviewing the relative frequency of the various etiologies of eyelid retraction in children.
