This study explored a novel strategy to develop solid-state whole-grain oats as a novel carrier of lactic acid bacteria and a nutraceutical supplement rich in ACE inhibitory peptides. Oats were fermented by Lactobacillus plantarum B1-6, Rhizopus oryzae, or a combination of L. plantarum B1-6 and R. oryzae. L. plantarum showed a much better growth performance in oats when it was combined with R. oryzae than when it was cultured alone, as evidenced by an increase in viable cell count to 9.70 log cfu g-1 after 72 h of fermentation. The coinoculated fermented oats (CFO) and the R. oryzae-fermented …

Mucormycosis is an often-fatal opportunistic fungal infection caused by members of the class Zygomycetes (Phycomycetes), order Mucorales. Most cases are diagnosed by histologic examination, through the identification of mucormycotic hyphae in infected tissues. Chronic debilitating conditions accompanied by acidosis such as diabetes mellitus, as well as leukemia, lymphoma, and immunodeficient states, predispose to the development of this type of opportunistic infection. This report describes a hitherto undescribed finding, the presence of structures consistent with sporangia in tissue sections,

This study represents 2 cases of kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) with invasive pulmonary Rhizopus infection, successfully treated with oral isavuconazole monotherapy without lobectomy. The rapid detection via mNGS of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid enabled early diagnosis and timely intervention, resulting in complete recovery and stable graft function. The literature review revealed a 16.7% mortality rate among 13 cases, with a higher mortality rate of 66.7% among patients receiving antifungal treatment without surgical intervention. Our findings underscore the efficacy of isavuconazole as a…

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is caused by environmental fungi and may complicate leg ulcers or traumatic wounds even in immunocompetent individuals. This case report highlights recurrent lower limb ulcers and cellulitis in a patient with type two diabetes mellitus, which was unresponsive to conventional antibiotic treatment. Histopathology revealed the diagnosis of cutaneous mucormycosis, and fungal cultures identified Rhizopus variabilis as the causative organism. Initial courses of oral azole antifungals yielded only partial response and he eventually required more aggressive treatment wit…

In an effort to generate new steroidal aromatase inhibitors, formestane (4-hydroxyandrost-4-ene-3,17-dione) (1) was biotransformed by Rhizopus oryzae to yield the known 4β,5α-dihydroxyandrostane-3,17-dione as the major product (5) and bioconverted by Beauveria bassiana to afford the known reduced 4,17β-dihydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one (6) and 3α,17β-dihydroxy-5β-androstan-4-one (7) and the new 4,11α,17β-trihydroxyandrost-4-en-3-one (8). All the metabolites showed more potent activities than their parent congener in the aromatase and MCF-7 breast cancer assays. The bioactivities and structural eluci…

We describe a case of a 31-year-old man with a history of ocular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who presented with a large 12-cm non-resolving traumatic skin lesion on his back. Biopsy showed fungal elements, and on fungal culture, Rhizopus arrhizus (formerly R. oryzae) was isolated. Cutaneous mucormycosis is an important diagnostic consideration for a non-resolving skin lesion in an immunocompromised host. Early tissue sampling is key, and diagnostic certainty is particularly important because first line therapy, liposomal amphotericin B, has significant systemic toxicities, notable renal toxicity, a…

Zygomycosis (mucormycosis) is a rare but highly invasive infection caused by fungi belonging to the order Mucorales, which includes the genera Rhizopus, Mucor, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Cunninghamella, Cokeromyces and Syncephalastrum. This type of infection is usually associated with hematologic diseases, diabetic ketoacidosis and organ transplantation. The most common form of presentation is rhinocerebral mucormycosis, with or without pulmonary involvement. Pulmonary zygomycosis is more common in patients with profound, prolonged neutropenia and can present as segmental o…

Microbial transformation studies of the antifungal alkaloid sampangine (2) have revealed that it is metabolized by a number of microorganisms. Using a standard two-stage fermentation technique, Beauvaria bassiana (ATCC 7159), Doratomyces microsporus (ATCC 16225), and Filobasidiella neoformans (ATCC 10226) produced the 4'-O-methyl-beta-glucopyranose conjugate (3), while Absidia glauca (ATCC 22752), Cunninghamella elegans (ATCC 9245), Cunninghamella species (NRRL 5695), and Rhizopus arrhizus (ATCC 11145) produced the beta-glucopyranose conjugate (4). There is a description of mass occurrence of nine cases of acute, fatal paraventricular and ventricular mucormycosis in fattened bulls at th … tes. Mucoraceum fibres were demonstrated in pathological manifestations. In three cases, strains of Rhizopus cohnii and Absidia ramosa were cultivated simultaneously from the sub-ulcerous layers in the reticulum. A number of findings testify that the mass occurrence of mucormycosis followed the feeding of mouldy bakery wastes on the basis of acidosis.

In normal rabbits subcutaneous granulomata produced by the injection of a spore suspension of Rhizopus oryzae remained confined to the site of inoculation, showed no fungus proliferation, no longer yielded the agent on culture 10 weeks after inoculation, and eventually healed. Similar well established granulomata in rabbits with acute alloxan diabetes induced 8, 10, and 15 days after injection of the fungus uniformly showed activation of the infection. This occurred only in animals showing acetonuria. In these animals the skin lesions showed proliferation of the fungus frequently associated wi…

Mucormycosis is an infrequent fungal infection commonly seen in immunocompromised individuals. However, it can also occur in immunocompetent patients, especially following trauma. We present a case of a 15-month-old girl with increasing swelling and redness in her left eye after a minor traumatic injury. Imaging showed sinusitis with orbital involvement. Histopathology validated the diagnosis of mucormycosis caused by Rhizopus species. The patient had emergency surgery, followed by antifungal and antibiotic therapy. Despite febrile reactions to the treatment, the infection was managed, and the…

Along with the pandemic COVID-19 spreads, new clinical challenges have emerged in the health care settings, among which there is a high risk of secondary invasive fungal infections with significant mortality. Here, we report a case of invasive fungal rhino orbital sinusitis due to the simultaneous co-infection by Rhizopus oryzae and Lomentospora prolificans, both identified by sequencing, in a 70-year-old Afghanistanian female with COVID-19. The patient was subjected to surgical debridement as well as taking liposomal amphotericin B, voriconazole, and on discharge, her condition was good. As f…

We report a fatal case of a rhino-cerebral zygomycosis, caused by Rhizopus arrhizus (oryzae). The patient was suffering from idiopathic thrombopenic purpura, diagnosed 1 year earlier. He was already treated with methylprednisolone 5 months prior to his admission to the hospital for a loss of vision and pain in the left eye as well as left orbital cellulitis. After an initial empirical treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics and voriconazole (infection of unknown origin), the patient was treated with liposomal amphotericin as soon as a positive fungal culture revealed a zygomycete. Unfortunat…
