Case Report Of Rib Polyostotic Fibrous Dysplasia.

Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia is a rare benign asymptomatic tumour of the ribs not requiring surgery on most occasions. We present here a case with left 10th and 11th rib fibrous dysplasia which was causing a hinderance to the Urologist for renalstone extraction. Therefore the 10th and 11th ribs were excised followed by chest wall reconstruction.

Rib Fracture Map in High-Energy Injuries.

OBJECTIVES: To use a novel rib unfurling technology to investigate the locations of multiple rib fractures occurring from high-energy trauma to discern if there are reproducible rib fracture patterns. METHODS: Patients between the ages of 18 and 48 years presenting to a Level 1 academic trauma center with ≥2 rib fractures after a high-energy mechanism of injury between 2017 and 2019 were identified. Curved planar reformatting of CT scans was used to create two-dimensional unfurled rib images by flattening out the view of the ribs from a CT scan. Rib fractures were placed on a template map usi…

Biomechanical characteristics of rib fracture fixation systems.

BACKGROUND: The primary aim of this study was to determine and compare the biomechanical properties of a fractured or intact rib after impla … ces in biomechanical properties such as stiffness and load to failure especially apply to fractured ribs. Insight in the differences between the systems might guide more specific implant selection and increase the surgeon's awareness for localizing hardware complaints or failure.

The History of Surgical Stabilization of Rib Fractures (SSRF).

Responsible for approximately 35% of all trauma-related deaths in the United States, thoracic trauma is one of the leading causes of death among trauma patients. Furthermore, traumatic rib fractures represent the most frequently encountered injury following thoracic trauma with mortality rates ranging from 8% among the elderly to 13% for patients with a flail chest. This manuscript reviews the history of SSRF as well as the contributions of the pioneering surgeons who championed this treatment. Rib fractures are a marker for severe injury as indicated by a recent National Trauma Data Bank (NTD

Slipping rib syndrome presentation in a young woman.

Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) disorder is the hypermobility of the costal cartilages attached to the floating ribs. Causes include weakness of the interchondral ligaments, and less commonly congenital rib deformities or direct trauma. Due to its location (right upper quadrant) and symptomatic presentation, the differential for this syndrome is especially broad, and as a result, even though this syndrome may make up to 5% of visits for lower chest/upper abdominal pain, it is frequently underdiagnosed, and patients often undergo excessive workup. Treatment includes conservative management, physica…

The rib cage: a new element in the spinopelvic chain.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzes anatomical variations of the thoracic cage (TC) according to spinopelvic alignment, age and gender using s … 01) and with TC Volume (0.3, p = 0.04), as well as rib absolute sagittal angle for upper and middle ribs (0.2, p = 0.02). Conversely, a -0.3 correlation has been exhibited between SPI and TK. Similar correlations were found with LL. PT significantly correlated with TC thickness (0.4, p = 0.003), SPI (-0.3, p = 0.03), and all rib relative sagittal angle …

Are We Underestimating the Morbidity of Single Rib Fractures?

PURPOSE: Previous studies suggest that patients with multiple rib fractures have poor outcomes, but it is unknown how isolated single rib fractures (SRF) are associated with morbidity or mortality. We hypothesized that patients with poor outcomes after SRF can be identified by demographics and comorbidities. The purpose of this study was to model adverse outcome after single rib fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used the 2016 National Inpatient Sample to identify patients with SRF associated with blunt trauma using ICD-10 coding. Comorbidities and abbreviated injury score (AIS) were also e

Rib Plasmacytoma With Unusual Sunburst Periosteal Reaction.

A 39-year-old man presented with progressive painful swelling on the left chest since 6 months. Examination revealed osseous consistency mass. CT of the thorax suggested mass arising from left fourth rib with intrathoracic and extrathoracic soft tissue components. It had extensive sunburst periosteal reaction consistent with primary malignant bone tumor. True cut biopsy revealed plasmacytoma. Routine hematological, biochemical, and bone marrow examinations were normal. Patient referred for whole-body F-FDG PET/CT to look for skeletal and bone marrow lesions. It revealed intensely metabolic lef

Robotically Assisted Transthoracic Cervical Rib Resection.

Several different approaches to surgical decompression of the thoracic outlet have been described. This report describes a unique case of robotically assisted transthoracic cervical rib resection for neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome. This minimally invasive technique offers delicate tissue manipulation under optimal visualization of the thoracic outlet structures. Hence it promotes patients' safety and complete surgical decompression.

[Rib fixation for flail chest after resuscitation].

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are a common complication caused by chest compressions during resuscitation. Flail chest may occur as a consequence, leading to respiratory failure. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present two cases in which surgical rib fixation was performed to treat flail chest after resuscitation. CONCLUSION: Based on a literature search, surgical rib fixation may be considered for flail chest after resuscitation in carefully selected patients.

Analysis of Rib Cartilages Anomalies in Patients With Microtia.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to identify the characteristics and incidence of rib cartilages anomalies in patients with microtia and to investigate the interaction between microtia and rib cartilages anomalies. METHODS: A total of 214 consecutive patients received a preoperative 3-dimensional chest computed tomography. A retrospective study was performed with the clinical and imaging data from November 2014 to July 2015. Pearson X2 test and Spearman analysis were used to analyze the interaction between microtia and rib cartilages anomalies. RESULTS: With the 3-dimensional chest

First Rib Fracture Resulting in Horner's Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: First rib fractures and traumatic Horner's syndrome are both quite rare, which can make it difficult to properly diagnose the combination of these 2 conditions in the emergency department. These conditions may be associated with severe medical emergencies, such as ongoing carotid dissection. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 33-year-old man who sustained fractures to his right second, third, and fourth ribs and a delay in the diagnosis of left Horner's syndrome after he was involved in a traffic accident. Left Horner's syndrome was caused by a left transverse fracture of the f…

Osteochondroma of the fifth rib resulting in recurrent hemothorax.

A 48-year-old man presented with recurrent spontaneous hemothoraces, which ultimately were found to be secondary to a pedunculated costal osteochondroma causing vascular injury. After initially undergoing endovascular coil embolization, he ultimately required segmental rib resection containing the offending lesion for definite treatment. Although a few cases of symptomatic costal osteochondromas have been reported in the literature, as far as we know, no previous reports have provided direct radiologic confirmation of active bleeding or the role of angiographic intervention. In this report, we
