Background. The prevalence of constipation in the (German) population has been shown to be 14.9% in a telephone survey, but more detailed data are required to characterize the sociographics and clinical characteristics of persons with different types of functional constipation, either constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) or functional constipation with or without meeting Rome criteria. Methods. Of 2239 constipated individuals identified during the telephone interview, 1037 (46.3%) were willing to provide a postal address for a questionnaire, of which 589 (56.8%) returned t…

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are common in clinical practice and in communities around the world, including Korea. In a recent point prevalence study on functional dyspepsia (FD) in Korea using the Rome III criteria, 13.4% of community respondents reported dyspepsia. Forty-seven percent of these FD cases were classified as postprandial distress syndrome, 26% as epigastric pain syndrome, and 27% as overlap syndrome. Upper and lower GI symptoms commonly overlap and FGIDs are related to psychological disorders. In our recent study of subjects recruited from a health-screening pro…

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis of functional constipation is important for reducing its negative consequences on the health of children and ado … inic specializing in pediatric gastroenterology. All children were aged between 6 and 12 years. The Rome IV criteria (two features for more than 1 month) and the Bristol scale were used.
RESULTS: The prevalence of functional constipation among the elementary school students was 22.3% (n=101). Among the 351 students who did not have functional constipa …

Recognizing the importance of childhood functional gastrointestinal disorders in understanding adult functional gastrointestinal disorders, and encouraging clinical and research interest, the Rome Coordinating Committee added a pediatric working team to Rome II in 1999. For Rome III, there was an increase from 1 to 2 pediatric working teams. This report summarizes the current consensus concerning functional disorders in infants and toddlers. Another report covers disorders diagnosed more often in school-aged children and adolescents. The symptoms from functional gastrointestinal disorders in c…

This article discusses the most interesting presentations at Digestive Disease Week, held in San Diego, in the field of functional and motor gastrointestinal disorders. One of the most important contributions was undoubtedly the presentation of the new Rome IV diagnostic criteria for functional gastrointestinal disorders. We therefore devote some space in this article to explaining these new criteria in the most common functional disorders. In fact, there has already been discussion of data comparing Rome IV and Rome III criteria in the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome, confirming that th…

In the early 1960s, a climate of public condemnation of electroconvulsive therapy was emerging in the USA and Europe. In spite of this, the electroshock apparatus prototype, introduced in Rome in 1938, was becoming hotly contended. This article explores the disputes around the display of the electroshock apparatus prototype in the summer of 1964 and sheds new light on the triangle of personalities that shaped its future: Karl and William Menninger, two key figures of American psychiatry in Topeka; their competitor, Adalberto Pazzini, the founder of the Sapienza Museum of the History of Medicin…

BACKGROUND: Functional constipation (FC) is a global burden, and data on its prevalence based on Rome IV diagnostic criteria in young children, particularly after the coronavirus disease 2019 era, are limited.
AIM: To determine the prevalence of FC in Thai infants and toddlers using the Rome IV criteria and identify associated factors.
METHODS: The Thai version of the Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaire for Pediatric Functional Gastrointestinal Disorder (R4PDQ-Toddler) was developed and then officially approved by the Rome Foundation. Guardians of children aged 6-48 months from six hospitals in…

BACKGROUND: Constipation is common in people with advanced cancer and is associated with significant morbidity and health economic burden, but it is often sub-optimally managed. Despite international consensus diagnostic criteria for functional and opioid-induced constipation (Rome IV diagnostic criteria), the term 'constipation' means different things to different people, impacting assessment, diagnosis and management.
AIM: To investigate the association between persons with advanced cancer self-reporting of constipation, response to the Rome IV diagnostic criteria statements for opioid-indu…

BACKGROUND: Conflicting data exists regarding risk factors associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Functional Dyspepsia (FD). Few studies examine anxiety/depression in relation to GERD phenotypes (Esophagitis/EE, and Non-Erosive Reflux Disease/NERD), FD, and Rome-IV syndromes. Our aim was to evaluate the association between epidemiological factors and comorbidities with GERD phenotypes, FD, and Rome-IV syndromes, as well as their relationship with anxiety/depression.
METHODS: 338 subjects were selected from 357 patients referred to three tertiary-centers for endoscopic eval…

BACKGROUND: Previous work indicated that psychosocial factors (depression and somatization) are more strongly associated with symptom severity and weight loss in functional dyspepsia (FD) than gastric sensorimotor function. However, there is conflicting evidence regarding the association of these etiopathogenetic factors with Rome III symptom-based subgroups in FD [epigastric pain syndrome (EPS), postprandial distress syndrome (PDS)]. We aimed to test whether gastric sensitivity and emptying, depression, and somatization are differentially associated with empirically derived functional gastrod…

[I]n contrast to Aristotle's male oriented explanation of procreation the Galenic was 'feminist' inasmuch as both sexes were presented as contributing equally in conception and accordingly both had to experience pleasure... Anatomically, the two sexes were presented in Galenic accounts as complementary, the difference being that the man's genitalia were on the outside and the woman's on the inside. The clitoris was likened to the penis and the ovaries considered 'testicles' or 'stones' that produced seed. The male seed was, it is true, depicted by Galenists as superior in having 'spiritual' qu

Background/Objectives: The diagnosis of lower functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) is currently based on subjective and unreliable patient-reported symptoms, with significant clinical overlap between diagnosed phenotypes. Objective biomarkers are urgently sought. Gastrointestinal ultrasound (GIUS) can objectively and non-invasively assess luminal contents. This study aimed to assess the utility of GIUS in phenotyping patients with lower FGIDs. Methods: Patients with lower FGIDs underwent a GIUS and completed the Rome IV Diagnostic Questionnaire, SAGIS questionnaire, and 100 mm VAS sco…

The gens Julia was one of the oldest families in ancient Rome, whose members reached the highest positions of power. They made history because Julius Caesar, perpetual dictator, great-uncle of the first emperor, Augustus, passed his name on to the Julio-Claudian dynasty with the emperors Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. Descriptions of the diseases of these emperors and some of his family members may indicate diagnoses such as epilepsy, dystonia, dementia, encephalitis, neurosyphilis, peripheral neuropathies, dyslexia, migraine and sleep disorders. In the historical context of ancient Ro…

BACKGROUND: Individuals with hypermobility spectrum disorders/hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (HSD/hEDS) frequently fulfill criteria for Rome IV functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is also commonly reported in HSD/hEDS and may impact on co-morbidity with and severity of FGIDs, although this remains to be studied. We determined the impact of concomitant POTS and HSD/hEDS on their association with Rome IV FGIDs.
METHODS: With the help of the charity organization Ehlers-Danlos Support UK, an online cross-sectional health survey was c…
