Calcium Homeostasis and Parturient Paresis in Ruminants: Mechanistic Insights and Clinical Management.

Parturient paresis remains a major economic challenge in global ruminant production, causing acute periparturient hypocalcemia and predisposing high-yielding animals to a cluster of secondary pathologies. Traditional narratives often treat regulatory pathways in isolation, whereas this review synthesizes multi-organ endocrine networks to address the kinetic dyssynchrony between mammary calcium drain and homeostatic recruitment velocity. Beyond the classical parathyroid hormone-vitamin D axis, we integrate the mammary-gut-bone axis into a unified endocrine model, highlighting the critical role

Cobalt deficiency in ruminants from Tocantins State, Brazil: an underdiagnosed nutritional challenge?

CONTEXT: Although mineral deficiencies are well-documented in Brazil, they continue to cause significant economic losses, particularly in animals raised under extensive grazing systems. Cobalt (Co) acts as a cofactor for the enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA isomerase, the sole metabolic pathway for propionate conversion and subsequent glucose synthesis. It is also essential for vitamin B12 synthesis, which supports hemoglobin formation, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, and nucleic acid synthesis. Deficient animals exhibit anorexia, weight loss (despite forage availability), anemia, ruminal atony, an

Genetic Diversity of Taenia hydatigena (Cestoda: Cyclophyllidea) in Small Ruminants from Algeria.

PURPOSE: Taenia hydatigena is a globally distributed cestode causing cysticercosis in livestock, particularly in small ruminants. In North Africa, data on its distribution and prevalence are scarce, with no prior studies addressing its molecular epidemiology. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of T. hydatigena in sheep and goats from Algeria. METHODS: A total of 1,002 animals (939 sheep and 63 goats) were examined for the presence of T. hydatigena cysts at the municipal slaughterhouse of Djelfa province between October 2021 and July 2022. Sixty-nine isolates w…

Pathological and Epidemiological Assessment of Trematode Burden in Ruminants From Central Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Trematode infections in ruminants cause major economic losses through reduced productivity and liver condemnation, with their epidemiology closely linked to snail habitats, rainfall patterns, and poor grazing management. A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2022 to March 2023 to characterize pathological changes caused by trematode infections and identify associated risk factors in ruminants slaughtered at three selected abattoirs in central Ethiopia. METHODS: A total of 256 ruminants, 137 bovine, 64 ovine and 55 caprine were included in the study. The sample size w…

Seroprevalence and associated factors of Leishmania infantum in small ruminants in Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniosis is a vector-borne disease caused by Leishmania parasites transmitted by infected phlebotomine sand flies. In the epidemiological study reported here, we investigated exposure to Leishmania infantum in sheep (Ovis aries) and goats (Capra hircus) in mainland Portugal. METHODS: A cross-sectional serosurvey was conducted in three geographical regions of Portugal (Trás-os-Montes, Centre and South), with sampling in 19 municipalities and 87 localities. RESULTS: A total of 2124 small ruminants were tested (1820 sheep and 304 goats). Overall seroprevalence was 21.3% (453/21…

Nematophagous fungi to controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants: A systematic review.

Gastrointestinal nematode infections are responsible for production losses in small ruminant worldwide. Moreover, anthelmintic resistance ha … t potential to produce bioproducts in the biological control of gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants.

Identification and Validation of Genus/Species-Specific Short InDels in Dairy Ruminants.

BACKGROUND: Over the past thirty years, the identification of species-specific molecular markers has significantly advanced our understanding of genetic diversity in both plants and animals. Among these, short InDels have emerged as vital genomic features, contributing more to sequence divergence than single nucleotide polymorphisms do in closely related species. This study aimed to identify specific InDels for Bos taurus, Bubalus bubalis, Capra hircus, and Ovis aries via an in silico approach and validated them in 400 individuals (100 for each species). RESULTS: We identified and characteriz

A 'green' toolbox: non-chemotherapeutic approaches for gastrointestinal nematode control in ruminants.

Grazing ruminants are commonly infected with gastrointestinal nematodes, and their negative impacts on animal health, welfare and production are intensified by increasing anthelmintic drug resistance. The goal of reducing anthelmintic use while preserving effective parasite control has motivated research on non-chemotherapeutic interventions, including those relevant to 'green'/organic ruminant production systems. However, 'green' control strategies are at varying levels of development, and an updated overview of the fragmented evidence is timely before they can be integrated with current para…

Prevalence and Diversity of Piroplasms in Free-Ranging Ruminants in Nevada, USA.

Wildlife may be infected with a high diversity of piroplasms and may serve as hosts or reservoirs for piroplasms of importance for domestic animals and public health. In the US, some piroplasms (e.g., Babesia spp. and Theileira cervi) have been associated with disease in native and exotic ungulates. Blood from 447 ruminants in Nevada were PCR tested for piroplasms, with 115 individuals from five species or subspecies found positive: 28/46 California bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis californiana), 1/16 desert bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis nelson), 70/255 mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus), 14/53 el…

Secondary Structure Analysis of Fasciola from Semi-wild Ruminants of Northeast India.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to study the secondary structure analysis of Fasciola flukes from a rare mithun host from Manipur. Fascioliasis, a neglected tropical trematodiasis, is poorly studied in India and is widely believed to be predominantly caused by F. gigantica. Through this study, we want to assess the flukes from the rare semi-wild ruminants of Northeast India. This study is important as the mithun population is semi-wild and its population is declining in Manipur. METHODS: Sample collected from the difficult and challenging terrain of Northeast India. The sample was col…

Ethnoveterinary uses of forage plants for domesticated ruminants in Malakand agency, Pakistan.

Plant ethnoveterinary uses are evident in various studies around the world, but the ethnoveterinary practices of forage species are not widely reported. Traditional knowledge is rapidly disappearing because of urbanization and commercial activities. The purpose of this study was to document plant species used by the local communities in Malakand Agency, Pakistan for foraging and ethnoveterinary purposes. Twenty different localities in the study area were surveyed for documentation of forage species and related traditional ethnoveterinary knowledge used for livestock. Semistructured questionnai
