A huge Ewing's sarcoma of the rib presenting with superior vena cava syndrome and dysphagia.

A 24-year-old male patient was admitted to our center complaining of dizziness (superior vena cava syndrome [SVCS]), dysphagia and pain in the right chest wall. At the initial diagnosis, the patient had been found to have an irregular shaped 35 × 30 × 27 cm mass in the right side of his chest. On November 12, 2019, this patient received surgery in our center. The right sixth rib and the tumor were completely removed (R0), while preserving all the lung tissue and other organs in the chest. The patient recovered well after surgery, and his right lung was fully expanded.

Ewing's Sarcoma of the Vertebral Body in an Adolescent: A Rare Case Report and Literature Review.

We report the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with a one-month history of back pain and bilateral lower limb weakness preceded by constitutional symptoms. She neither had a family history of malignancy nor a previous history of trauma. A series of imaging procedures revealed an aggressive lesion of the T12 vertebra with a large soft-tissue component and intraspinal extension leading to spinal cord compression causing cord edema. She underwent urgent posterior instrumentation and fixation of T9 to T12 vertebrae due to worsening neurological deficits. Adjuvant and neoadjuvant chemothera

Pathfinders in oncology from the end of the 19th century to the first description of Ewing sarcoma.

During the period 1884 to 1922, the only option in cases of operable cancers was radical surgery, and only a minority of patients were cured. Sporadic attempts were made to treat inoperable cancer patients with bacterial toxins; however, with the discovery of x-ray and radium, the era of radiation treatment as an alternative to surgery began. The discovery of transmissible cancers and experimental growth of cancer cells offered new information and not only led to a better understanding of the cellular composition of cancers but also yielded important information that ultimately paved the way t

Primary Ewing sarcoma of the larynx with distant metastasis: a case report and review of the literature.

Extraosseous Ewing sarcoma is a rare, poorly differentiated round-cell tumour that is part of the Ewing sarcoma family of tumours. Here, we present an extremely rare case of primary extraosseous Ewing sarcoma arising in the larynx, with distant metastases. A 53-year-old man with a history of Hodgkin lymphoma treated 4 years earlier with 8 cycles of chemotherapy presented to our medical centre with a 2-week history of hoarseness. On physical examination, he was found to have a right supraglottic mass together with a fixed right vocal cord. Computed tomography imaging of the patient's neck showe

Renal Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor: a case report and literature review.

Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (EWS/PNET) in the kidney is a rare but high-grade malignant tumor that affects predominantly elder children and adolescents. Patients mostly present with nonspecific symptoms such as abdominal pain and gross hematuria. Since EWS/PNET has a rapid clinical progression with early metastasis and death, it is essential to make an accurate and early diagnosis. Once diagnosed, multimodality treatment, including radical surgery combined with adjuvant chemotherapy, and radiotherapy if necessary, is recommended. Unfortunately, there are no characteristic s

Ewing's Sarcoma as a Second Malignancy in Long-Term Survivors of Childhood Hematologic Malignancies.

Modern multimodal treatment has significantly increased survival for patients affected by hematologic malignancies, especially in childhood. Following remission, however, the risk of developing a further malignancy is an important issue. The long-term estimated risk of developing a sarcoma as a secondary malignancy is increased severalfold in comparison to the general population. Ewing's sarcoma family encompasses a group of highly aggressive, undifferentiated, intra- and extraosseous, mesenchymal tumors, caused by several types of translocations usually involving the EWSR1 gene. Translocation

Extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the mediastinum: Significant response to chemoradiotherapy.

Primary mediastinal extraskeletal Ewing's sarcoma (EES) is quite rare. To the best of our knowledge, only five cases have been reported. Given the paucity of data, there is consequently no optimal treatment strategy available. The current study presents the case of a 51-year-old female with unresectable EES of the posterior mediastinum. Chemoradiotherapy achieved near complete remission without severe side-effects. The literature associated with EES is also reviewed. The present case highlights the possibility of the diagnosis of EES for a mediastinal mass. Chemoradiotherapy may be a good opti

Characterization and drug resistance patterns of Ewing's sarcoma family tumor cell lines.

Despite intensive treatment with chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery, over 70% of patients with metastatic Ewing's Sarcoma Family of Tumors (EFT) will die of their disease. We hypothesize that properly characterized laboratory models reflecting the drug resistance of clinical tumors will facilitate the application of new therapeutic agents to EFT. To determine resistance patterns, we studied newly established EFT cell lines derived from different points in therapy: two established at diagnosis (CHLA-9, CHLA-32), two after chemotherapy and progressive disease (CHLA-10, CHLA-25), and two at r

Primary intradural extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma of the lumbar spine presenting with acute bleeding.

We report the case of a 28-year-old female with primary extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma who presented initially with a low back pain and a right S1 radicular pain. Before scheduled surgical removal, she suddenly developed an unusual complication of an acute hemorrhage and an acute cauda equina syndrome. Emergency surgery was done which demonstrated an acute bleeding. Treatment was followed by the chemotherapy and the adjuvant radiotherapy. Follow-up has been done for 6 years after presentation.

Ewing's sarcoma arising from the adrenal gland in a young male: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Ewing's sarcoma uncommonly arises from extraosseous soft tissue or parenchymal organs. Primary adrenal Ewing's Sarcoma, although very rare, is extremely aggressive and commonly fatal. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17 year old Pakistani male was referred to the outpatient oncology clinic at our center with a three month history of concomitant pain, swelling and dragging sensation in the right hypochondrium. Abdominal examination revealed a large, firm mass in the right hypochondrium extending into the right lumbar region and epigastrium. His genital exam was unremarkable and there were no s

Solitary extra-skeletal sinonasal metastasis from a primary skeletal Ewing's sarcoma.

INTRODUCTION: Ewing's sarcoma is a rare, malignant tumour predominantly affecting young adolescent males. We describe a unique case of an isolated extra-skeletal metastasis from a skeletal Ewing's sarcoma primary, arising in the right sinonasal cavity of a young man who presented with severe epistaxis and periorbital cellulitis. RESULTS: Histologically, the lesion comprised closely packed, slightly diffuse, atypical cells with round, hyperchromatic nuclei, scant cytoplasm and occasional mitotic figures, arranged in a sheet-like pattern. Immunohistochemical analysis showed positive staining on

VEGF165 promotes the osteolytic bone destruction of ewing's sarcoma tumors by upregulating RANKL.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether vascular endothelial growth factor-165 (VEGF165) contributed to the osteolytic process in Ewing's sarcoma. VEGF165 induced osteoclast formation from murine bone marrow cells. Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining demonstrated significantly fewer osteoclasts in VEGF-inhibited TC/siVEGF7-1 tumors compared to TC71 parental or TC/si-control tumors. Receptor activator NF-kappaB (RANKL), a critical osteoclastogenic factor, was decreased in TC/siVEGF7-1 cells. Incubation of these cells with recombinant VEGF165 upregulated RANKL in a dos

[Ewing's sarcoma in children--current surgical treatment options, evaluation of our patients].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Neoplastic diseases continue to arouse much concern in the general population. This also applies to bone tumors. Until recently, these neoplasms, most frequently occurring in children and adolescents, were considered to have the worst possible prognosis with a minimal opportunity for a successful outcome of treatment. This is a likely reason for the still deeply rooted belief that amputation of the affected limb is necessary and disease prognosis is uncertain, which also applies to Ewing's sarcoma. Only lately could these patients be offered a hope of successful treatment

The Ewing's sarcoma protein interacts with the Tudor domain of the survival motor neuron protein.

The survival motor neuron (SMN) gene is the spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) determining gene. Here we report that the SMN protein product interacts in vitro and in vivo with the arginine/glycine (RG)-rich RNA binding protein and transcription factor, Ewing's sarcoma (EWS). Recently, the SMN encoded Tudor domain (exon 3) and the YG-motifs (exon 6) have been shown to be involved in binding to RG-rich proteins. Here, we demonstrate that the Tudor domain encoded by SMN exon 3 is independently sufficient to mediate the interaction with EWS. Synthetic mutations within the Tudor domain, as well as a SM

Emergency department presentations of a rare tumor--extraosseous cervical paraspinal Ewing's sarcoma.

We report the case of a 9-year-old boy who presented to our community-based Pediatric Emergency Department with complaints of neck pain, stiffness and upper extremity weakness. The symptoms were later identified to be due to cervical extraosseous paraspinal Ewing's sarcoma. The patient had a fatally aggressive clinical course. Cervical extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma is rarely reported in pediatrics. Ewing's sarcoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of children presenting with complaints of unremitting or recurring non-specific back or neck pain or neurological deficits. Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor of the ureter: a case report and review of the literature.

Extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma/primitive neuroectodermal tumor (ES/PNET) is a rare soft tissue tumor of childhood usually found in the extremities. The authors present the case of a 17-year-old girl who presented with right flank pain and hematuria and during operation was found to have a right ureteral mass. The histopathologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, and cytogenetic characteristics of the excised mass were consistent with extraosseous ES/PNET. This is the first known reported case of extraosseous ES/ PNET of the ureter. The pathologic features and clinical management of this cas

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy of metastatic Ewing's sarcoma with MIC2 (CD99) immunocytochemistry.

The use of fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) has been infrequently described as a diagnostic modality for Ewing's sarcoma (ES) patient follow-up and management. The purpose of this study is to examine the use and accuracy of FNAB combined with MIC2 immunocytochemistry for evaluating metastases in patients with ES. Records from Saint Louis University Health Sciences Center and Indiana University Medical Centers identified patients with known ES who had undergone FNAB for evaluation of potential metastases. Immunocytochemical analysis for MIC2 (CD99) was performed retrospectively on cell bloc

High-dose busulphan/melphalan with autologous stem cell rescue in Ewing's sarcoma.

Eighteen patients with poor risk Ewing's sarcoma (including 11 patients with metastatic disease at presentation) received consolidation therapy of busulphan and melphalan with autologous stem cell rescue. There were nine females. The median age at diagnosis was 14.2 years (range 2.75-30 years). There was one early death due to cytomegalovirus pneumonitis. One patient developed a single generalised convulsion during busulphan therapy. Severe renal toxicity was not encountered. One patient developed veno-occlusive disease of the liver (VOD) which eventually resolved. With a median follow up of 2

Prognostic features of Ewing's sarcoma on radionuclide bone scan after initial treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To study short-term changes in the radiopharmaceutical bone scan (BS) appearance of Ewing's sarcoma for indicators of decreased survival or future disease progression. METHODS: One-hundred and four patients with non-metastatic Ewing's sarcoma were evaluated at three time points: time of diagnosis (pre-biopsy), after induction chemotherapy (13 weeks) and after radiation therapy (20 weeks). Radiographs, computed tomograms (CTs) and BSs were obtained at each interval. Primary lesion activity and size on BS were evaluated and compared to radiographic and CT findings. RESULTS: No signi

Effectiveness of intrathoracic chemothermotherapy for malignant pleurisy due to Ewing's sarcoma: a case report.

This paper describes a case of malignant pleurisy which showed evidence of the effectiveness of a new mode of cancer treatment, intrathoracic chemothermotherapy (ICT). ICT consisted of a bolus intrathoracic injection of 50 mg cis-diamminedichloroplatinum (CDDP) and local heating using 8 MHz radiofrequency waves for 60 min. A patient with multiple lung metastases and malignant pleurisy on both sides due to Ewing's sarcoma was treated on the right side with ICT, along with concomitant systemic administration of 50 mg CDDP. Intrathoracic temperatures were monitored by insertion of thermocouple te
