A new surgical technique of uterine auto-transplantation in cynomolgus monkey: preliminary report about two cases.

OBJECTIVE: Uterine transplantation experiments have been performed in various animal species for future clinical applications of uterine transplantation for permanent uterine factor infertility in humans. The aim of this study was to confirm the feasibility of uterine auto-transplantation in cynomolgus monkeys by developing new surgical techniques. METHODS: Two female cynomolgus monkeys underwent surgery under general anesthesia. The uterus with vascular grafts and the vaginal wall was removed, and back-table preparation was performed using heparinized saline. The uterus with vascular grafts

Primary pineal rhabdomyosarcoma successfully treated by high-dose chemotherapy followed by autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation: case report.

Primary intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma is quite rare, and its prognosis is poor compared with that for rhabdomyosarcoma in other organs. The authors present a case of pineal rhabdomyosarcoma successfully managed with multimodal therapy including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) followed by autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (HDC/APBSCT). An 8-year-old girl presenting with headache and nausea was referred to the authors' institution. Computed tomography and MRI revealed a pineal tumor associated with obstructive hydrocephalus. Subsequently, an

[Choice of examination methods in bronchial cancer].

The techniques used for the investigation of a patient with lung carcinoma are determined by the mode of presentation of the disease. The first step is based on the clinical examination and the chest X-ray (frontal and lateral view). The pathological examination of the tumor represents the second step. Depending on the operability of the patient at this stage of the investigation, further evaluation will (or will not) be performed to determine the extension of the tumor, using TNM staging system. Any candidate for surgery has to be bronchoscoped in order to evaluate the endobronchial spread of

Morbidity of rectosigmoid resection and primary anastomosis in patients undergoing primary cytoreductive surgery for advanced epithelial ovarian cancer.

OBJECTIVES: Studies from the colorectal literature have shown that factors associated with anastomotic leak after colorectal resection inclu … the prolapsed loop requiring surgical correction, and prolapse corrected electively at the time of second-look surgery. CONCLUSIONS: In women undergoing primary cytoreductive surgery, the morbidity associated with en bloc resection of ovarian carcinoma with low rectosigmoid resection and anastomosis without protective ileostomy was acceptably low, with an anastomot …

Foreign body reaction to hemostatic materials mimicking recurrent brain tumor. Report of three cases.

Chemical agents routinely used in neurosurgery to achieve intraoperative hemostasis can cause a foreign body reaction, which appears on magnetic resonance (MR) images to be indistinguishable from recurrent tumor. Clinical and/or imaging evidence of progression of disease early after surgical resection or during aggressive treatment may actually be distinct features of granuloma in these circumstances. A series of three cases was retrospectively analyzed for clinical, imaging, surgical, and pathological findings, and the consequences they held for further disease management. All patients were b

Survivorship After Meniscal Allograft Transplantation According to Articular Cartilage Status.

BACKGROUND: Clinical outcomes after meniscal allograft transplantation (MAT) in arthritic knees are unclear, and objective estimates of graft survival according to the articular cartilage status have not been performed. HYPOTHESIS: MAT should provide clinical benefits in knees with high-grade cartilage damage, but their graft survivorship should be inferior to that in knees with low-grade chondral degeneration after MAT. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: The records of 222 consecutive patients who underwent primary MAT were reviewed to compare clinical outcomes and

Current concepts in anal fissures.

INTRODUCTION: Anal fissure is a common and distressing problem the true incidence of which is probably higher than recorded. There is a progressive understanding of the etiopathogenesis of this entity and the changing trend in its management approach. This is a systematic review of available published literature looking at current management options in anal fissures. METHODS: A MEDLINE-based search of the relevant literature from 1970 to 2004 was performed on the current concepts in etiopathogenesis and management of anal fissure. RESULTS: The current opinion is a drift toward conservative m

[Coronary anomalies associated with the Williams-Beuren syndrome. Apropos of 2 cases].

Two coronary artery anomalies associated with the Williams-Beuren syndrome are reported. The first case was a 14 year old child with severe supra-aortic stenosis associated with severe hypoplasia of the ascending aorta; 2 D echocardiography and angiography showed a voluminous aneurysm of the left main coronary artery. Aortoplasty with a patch gave a good early result. The second case was a two and a half months old baby operated as an emergency after cardiac arrest and who died at the end of surgery. The baby had severe supra-aortic stenosis, occlusion of the left coronary ostium by the left a

Infected Wound Secondary to a Hyena Bite in a Patient From Rural South Sudan: A Case Report.

Animal bites, especially hyena bites, can lead to severe injuries and cause significant morbidity and disabilities to a patient, most commonly in low- and middle-income countries. In South Sudan, the most common type of hyena is the Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta). The management of severe injuries due to a hyena bite is multi-disciplinary and challenging in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). Acute emergency conditions like active bleeding and sepsis should be treated, the wound should be cleaned, debrided from devitalized tissue, and reconstructive procedures should be done when the wou

Intra- abdominal sepsis from a perforated duodenal ulcer-Management of a difficult surgical abdomen.

INTRODUCTION: Peptic ulcer perforation is a common surgical emergency that is a complication of 9% of patients with peptic ulcer disease (Kjetil et al., 2015 [1]). Despite advances in the management of peptic ulcer disease, the number of acute complications have remained constant. Intra-abdominal sepsis is defined as inflammation of the peritoneum caused by pathogenic micro-organisms and their products (Pavlidis, 2003). CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case report on intra-abdominal sepsis in a 20 yr old patient admitted in the intensive care unit at our institution following a perforated duod

Conservative laparoscopic approach to a perforated pyomyoma after uterine artery embolization.

We describe a conservative laparoscopic approach to treatment of a perforated pyomyoma after uterine artery embolization. A 36-year-old woman came to our emergency department 8 weeks after undergoing uterine artery embolization. She reported painful abdominal cramps. Physical examination revealed fever, tachycardia, hypotension, abdominal pain with rebound tenderness and pain during bimanual examination. Ultrasonography showed a fundal/subserosal leiomyoma and a moderate amount of fluid in the abdominal cavity. Because the patient desired preservation of the uterus, a laparoscopic approach was

[Congenital diaphragmatic hernia: evaluation of two ways of management].

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze the treatment and evolution of congenital diaphragmatic hernia in the last 16 years, distinguishing two ways of management, and to look for parameters that can predict the evolution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 1978 and 1994, 29 cases of congenital diaphragmatic hernia were treated in our NICU. During the first period (1978-1988) 17 cases (group 1) were treated after birth as a surgical emergency. In the second period (1989-1994), preoperative stabilization was performed before surgery (12 cases, group 2). Two cases of group 2 were excluded b

Timing of free microsurgical tissue transfer for the acute phase of hand injuries.

Because of favourable survival rates in replantation surgery and a high standard of free tissue transfer the interval between injury and microsurgical reconstruction has become gradually shorter. The acute phase can be defined as the interval ranging from emergency procedures within 24 hours to urgent procedures done within 72 hours. Bearing in mind the infection rates that have been reported of 1.5% for the acute phase and 17.5% for the late phase, we should encourage emergency reconstructions. However, in most cases of upper extremity injuries, reconstruction with conventional flaps is possi

Allogeneic deep frozen meniscal graft for repair of osteochondral defects in the knee joint.

Osteochondral defects in the knee joints of five patients caused by trauma or osteochondritis dissecans were repaired using deep-frozen allogeneic meniscal grafts. Three patients were male and two were female, with a mean age of 26.4 years. The mean follow-up period was 31 months. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at all periods clearly showed a smooth and congruous articular surface, although the signal intensity of the grafted meniscus was not the same as that of the articular cartilage. Second-look arthroscopy performed approximately 1 year after surgery demonstrated that the g
