Reconstructing Colonization Dynamics of the Human Parasite Schistosoma mansoni following Anthropogenic Environmental Changes in Northwest Senegal.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic environmental changes may lead to ecosystem destabilization and the unintentional colonization of new habitats by parasite populations. A remarkable example is the outbreak of intestinal schistosomiasis in Northwest Senegal following the construction of two dams in the '80s. While many studies have investigated the epidemiological, immunological and geographical patterns of Schistosoma mansoni infections in this region, little is known about its colonization history. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Parasites were collected at several time points after the disease out…

[Progressive spinal amyotrophy type I or Werdnig-Hoffman disease. Apropos of 5 cases in Dakar (Senegal)].

Type I spinal muscular atrophy or Werdnig-Hoffman disease is rarely described in black populations. We report five such cases diagnosed in a paediatric outpatient clinic in Dakar. We conducted a retrospective study relating to patients examined for hypotonia progressing since birth for whom the electromyogram had made it possible to confirm an involvement of the peripheral nerve without nerve conduction anomaly. Mean age of diagnosis was 12.3 +/- 7.6 months. Respiratory distress was noted for 2 patients. A family background of similar symptomatology was found in 1 case and consanguinity in 2 c

Frequency and characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in wastewater in Dakar, Senegal.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the occurrence, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and genetic characteristics of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli in wastewater collected in Dakar, Senegal. RESULTS DESCRIPTION: All samples (n = 48) carried ESBL-producing isolates. The concentrations of ESBL-producing E. coli ranged from 1.4 × 10⁴ to 3.3 × 10⁵ CFU/100 mL, whereas the ratio of ESBL-producing E. coli among the total E. coli population varied between 0.2% and 16.3%. All the 107 isolated ESBL-producing E. coli isolates were multidrug resistant (MDR), with 100% r…

Diagnosis and follow-up of the first case of Gaucher disease under enzyme replacement therapy in Senegal.

UNLABELLED: Gaucher disease is a rare inherited disorder caused by a deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase, leading to the accumulation of glucocerebroside within macrophages. This accumulation results in a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations, which may be life-threatening in severe cases. We report the first documented case in Senegal of a patient with Gaucher disease successfully treated with enzyme replacement therapy. The diagnosis was established based on characteristic bone marrow findings showing Gaucher cells, together with markedly reduced β-glucocerebrosidase a…

Genomic Characterization of Salmonella Isolates Causing Infections in Children with Sickle Cell Disease in Dakar, Senegal.

Salmonella is a major bacterial pathogen in low-income countries, where it circulates among humans, animals, and the environment. Children with sickle cell disease (SCD) are particularly vulnerable to severe Salmonella infections. This study aimed to characterize Salmonella isolates causing infections in Senegalese children with SCD. Using antimicrobial susceptibility testing, whole-genome sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis, we investigated antibiotic resistance, serovar diversity, and virulence factors on 23 isolates from SCD patients with diverse clinical infections. The isolates belonge…

Impact of seasonal malaria chemoprevention timing on clinical malaria incidence dynamics in the Kedougou region, Senegal.

Seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine and amodiaquine is recommended by the World Health Organization since 2012 for clinical malaria prevention in children in the Sahelian region of Africa. In Senegal, SMC implementation began in 2013 and is given to children under 10 years old. This study aimed to describe clinical malaria incidence in the general population during routine SMC implementation and to analyse how SMC timing impacted clinical malaria dynamics in eligible children. We conducted an ecological study in the Kedougou region of Senegal in 27 villages in…

Validation of the Child Depression Screening Tool in three African settings: Rwanda, Senegal and South Africa.

The unavailability of reliable, easy-to-use depression screening tools adapted for Sub-Saharan African children is a significant barrier to the treatment of childhood depression. We thus adapted the Child Depression Screening Tool (CDST) to the South African (SA), Senegalese (S) and Rwandan (R) contexts, as a tool to screen for depression in children suffering from chronic illnesses, trauma and difficulties related to COVID-19, family and community hardships. A DSM-5-based diagnostic interview and the CDST screening measure were administered to 1,001 participants aged between 7 and 16 years. T…

Child marriage prevention as a preconception health strategy: A modelling-based cost-benefit analysis in Senegal.

OBJECTIVES: This modelling study evaluates the costs and benefits of implementing community sensitisation interventions to prevent child marriage in Senegal. By focusing specifically on the prevention of neonatal mortality and stillbirths, it offers a new perspective on the broader health implications of such interventions, addressing a critical gap in the economic evaluation of preconception health strategies. STUDY DESIGN: Model-based economic evaluation. METHODS: We developed a deterministic, cohort-based simulation model to estimate the economic and societal impacts of community sensitis…

Recent emergence of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 in Senegal and virus spread to neighboring countries.

OBJECTIVES: As we approach the eradication of poliomyelitis, one of the global challenges is to control and interrupt the transmission of the vaccine-derived polioviruses. In Senegal, an outbreak of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) of the NIE-JIS-1 emergence group was previously reported from 2020 to 2021. METHODS: Our study report a newemergence of cVDPV2 in Senegal from 2023 to 2024, first detected in sewage and later in stool samples from children with acute flaccid paralysis, particularly, in Southeastern Senegal. RESULTS: All recent strains from Senegal were geneti…

Lessons from the elimination of trachoma in Senegal: implications for high-burden countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

Senegal's achievement in eliminating trachoma as a public health problem offers a powerful model for countries still burdened by the disease. This success was driven by a holistic and context-sensitive implementation of the SAFE strategy. The country invested in training health workers to deliver trichiasis surgeries in hard-to-reach areas, ensured high coverage of azithromycin through consistent mass drug administration (MDA), and embedded hygiene promotion in schools and community structures. Importantly, Senegal tailored interventions to regional cultural and epidemiological contexts, enhan…

A Case of Myiasis Caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in an Italian Traveler Returning from Senegal.

PURPOSE: Myiases are infestations of human and animal tissues by fly larvae. These conditions are widespread in tropical countries and travelers in those areas are at risk of becoming infested. Although Cordylobia anthropophaga (Blanchard & Berenger-Feraud, 1872) is one of the most common myiasis-causing species, few high-quality images and molecular sequences are available for this fly. We present a case of C. anthropophaga infestation in an Italian patient returning from Senegal, with the aim of increasing both visual and molecular data for this species. METHODS: After removal, the larva wa…

Prevalence and Predictive Factors of Sickle Cell Emergencies Readmission in the Clinical Hematology Department of Dakar, Senegal.

Introduction: Sickle cell emergencies are the most common cause of hospitalization for patients with sickle cell disease (SCD). Hospital readmissions represent a considerable financial burden for healthcare systems and increase patient morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and predictive factors of sickle cell emergencies readmission. Materials and Methods: We conducted a prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive, and analytical study over a 4-month period, including all adult patients admitted for an emergency related to SCD: vaso-occlusive crisis (VOC),

Re-Emergence of Dengue Serotype 3 in the Context of a Large Religious Gathering Event in Touba, Senegal.

Dengue virus (DENV) was detected in Senegal in 1979 for the first time. Since 2017, unprecedented frequent outbreaks of DENV were noticed yearly. In this context, epidemiological and molecular evolution data are paramount to decipher the virus diffusion route. In the current study, we focused on a dengue outbreak which occurred in Senegal in 2018 in the context of a large religious gathering with 263 confirmed DENV cases out of 832 collected samples, including 25 life-threatening cases and 2 deaths. It was characterized by a co-circulation of dengue serotypes 1 and 3. Phylogenetic analysis bas…

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney in southern Senegal (Ziguinchor): case report and review of the literature.

The kidney's primary squamous cell carcinoma is a rare tumor, representing 0.5-0.8% of malignant renal tumors and 4% of upper urinary tract tumors. This pathology often occurs after a long past history of renal lithiasis and repeated untreated or poorly treated urinary tract infections. The delay in diagnosis resulting from an insidious symptomatology, without specific signs, often leads to a pejorative development, especially in poor countries. A seventy-nine-year-old Senegalese woman, with no past history of lithiasis nor recurrent urinary tract infection and urinary schistosomiasis, was rec…

The effects of performance-based financing on neonatal health outcomes in Burundi, Lesotho, Senegal, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Maternal and newborn care has been a primary focus of performance-based financing (PBF) projects, which have been piloted or implemented in 21 countries in sub-Saharan Africa since 2007. Several evaluations of PBF have demonstrated improvements to facility delivery or quality of care. However, no studies have measured the impact of PBF programmes directly on neonatal health outcomes in Africa, nor compared PBF programmes against another. We assess the impact of PBF on early neonatal health outcomes and associated health care utilization and quality in Burundi, Lesotho, Senegal, Zambia and Zimb…

Mycetoma epidemiology, diagnosis management, and outcome in three hospital centres in Senegal from 2008 to 2018.

Mycetoma is a neglected tropical disease caused by various actinomycetes or fungi. The disease is characterized by the formation of tumor like-swellings and grains. Senegal is an endemic country where mycetoma cases are under-or misdiagnosed due to the lack of capacities and knowledge among health workers and the community; and where the management of eumycetoma, burdened by a high amputation rate, is currently inadequate. This study aimed to update data on the epidemiology of mycetoma cases diagnosed in three hospital centres in Senegal over a 10 years-period. A total of 193 patients, diagnos…

Biochemical effects and safety of Gum arabic (Acacia Senegal) supplementation in patients with sickle cell anemia.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a hereditary chronic hemolytic anemia with several clinical consequences. Intravascular sickling of red blood cells leads to multi-organ dysfunction. Moreover, several biochemical abnormalities have been associated with SCA. Gum arabic (GA) is an edible dried gummy exudate obtained from Acacia Senegal tree. GA showed antioxidant and cytoprotective activities and demonstrated protection against hepatic, renal, and cardiac toxicities in experimental rats. We hypothesized that regular intake of GA improves renal and liver functions in patients with SCA. ME…
