AIM: Determination of the prevalence of spondylarthropathies (SAP) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) among Finno-Ugrian population of Russia.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A one stage expedition trial was made of representative samples of Mordovian and Mari populations including 1312 citizens aged over 14 years.
RESULTS: Incidence rate of SAP among Mordovian and Mari examinees was 0.7 and 0.2%, respectively, ankylosing spondylitis being most frequent finding. RA occurred in 2.5 and 0.6%, respectively. All the RA cases were females without family history of this disease.
CONCLUSION: SAP and RA prevalen

PURPOSE: In 1992-94 a nation-wide survey in primary schools in the Sultanate of Oman for ocular disorders was conducted. This report focuses on the prevalence of visual acuity loss after injury.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: A random selection of 6,292 children from Grades 1 and 6 from all primary schools in the country provided the research sample. Children who failed the visual acuity screening test received a complete "on the spot" eye examination by the pediatric ophthalmologist.

We identified all patients treated by local fasciectomy at the Department of Hand Surgery, Uppsala University Hospital between 1965 and 1996. A total of 2375 operations were performed on 1600 patients. We found a male:female ratio of 5.9:1. Women had a higher mean age at first operation (62.4 years) than men (59.8 years). One-third of the men required repeated surgery and one-quarter of the women. Early age at first operation was associated with recurrent disease.

Skin diseases are common in children. However, only a very few prospective epidemiologic surveys are available in the literature. The present survey was directed at determining the spectrum and pattern of skin diseases of children in Kuwait. A total of 10,000 consecutive new patients were studied; 96% were children of Arab descent. Three hundred and twenty seven European lynx (Lynx lynx) were examined for Trichinella sp. larvae using the muscle digestion method. The animals were of both sexes, various ages, and collected between 1989 and 1994 in different locations in Finland. Forty percent of them (132) were found to be infected. A total of 1,136 school children comprising 433 males and 703 females, within the age groups 4 to 16 years and all resident in Aba municipal town of Abia State were examined for clinical signs of dermatophytoses. Melanosis naeviformis of Becker (MNB) can be associated with hypoplasia of soft tissue or extremities, spina bifida and scoliosis of the vertebral column. We have investigated 50 patients (42 men, 8 women) with MNB radiologically. Scoliosis was diagnosed in 13 patients (26%). The curves of scoliosis varied from 11 degrees to 17 degrees. Reports from various countries, but never from Israel, have presented demographic data and the relative frequency of various salivary gland tumors. We reviewed 25 years of experience with-245 patients treated for salivary gland tumors, arising in the parotid [142 patients [pts], 57.9%], submandibular [34 pts, 13.9%], sublingual [2 pts, 0.8%] and minor salivary glands [67 pts, 27.3%]. The epidemiology and clinical presentation of abdominal tuberculosis were studied retrospectively in 298 adult cases admitted in Safdarjang Hospital, New Delhi over a 3-year period. We present the raw data from a study done on the incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures on Ischia, an island facing the Bay of Naples. Its 43,975 inhabitants form a well-defined, stable and homogeneous population. Since no air transportation to the mainland is available for residents, acute health care is provided by the sole local hospital. We carried out a discharge data survey by reviewing the hospital medical records from 1980-1989. During that decade, 148 residents (111 women, 37 men) had new hip fractures. Two aetiological studies on filariasis were conducted from January to June, 1993. In the first study, 690 blood samples clinically diagnosed of filariasis were examined. In the other, 150 blood samples and 150 skin snips collected from the same group of eye clinic Patients clinically diagnosed of filariasis were investigated. Of the 690 subjects, 108 (15.64%) had filariasis with M. perstans and Loa loa accounting for 98.15 and 1.85% of positive cases respectively. AIMS AND BACKGROUND: In southern European countries, the availability of epidemiologic data on cutaneous malignant melanoma is limited. A descriptive analysis was performed on melanoma cases diagnosed in the Italian region of Romagna (population 600,000), 1986-91.
