This study examined vicarious trauma in clinicians who provide sexual abuse treatment (N = 383). A random sample of clinical members from the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers and American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children were surveyed. A sample of 819 female college students completed measures of childhood sexual abuse (CSA), adult sexual victimization (ASV), mistrust, trauma-related symptoms, and drinking problems. Using a serial indirect effects model, we hypothesized that CSA would be associated with ASV through the indirect effects of mistrust → trauma-related symptoms → drinking problems. Seventeen female subjects (ages 55-73) participating in a clinical trial for older panic disorder patients were administered the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Seven subjects reported histories of sexual abuse. Physical abuse was reported by 10 subjects, including six of the seven who also reported sexual abuse. The data raise questions regarding the possible contributory role of childhood trauma in some panic disorder patients.

Furthermore, both depression and anxiety have been linked to compulsive sexual behaviors.
