The most recent National Research Council Nutrient Requirements for Sheep and Goats was published in 2007, one of the most consequential nutrient requirement recommendations for sheep and goats in the world. The enhancement of production efficiency, minimization of carbon footprint, and maximization of resource economy, among others, motivate the continuing discussion of nutrient utilization and refinement of nutrient requirements in sheep and goats that are increasingly important in various parts of the world. Progress has been made in the estimation of energy and protein requirements in shee…

BACKGROUND: Atypical manifestations with a podal distribution have been occasionally reported in the USA, the UK and Israel in the early 2000s. The lesions were characterised by a tumor-like progression with a lack of remission over months and seemed to affect mostly older lambs and adult sheep, and ultimately led to euthanasia. Here, we report a case from Germany with similar findings, raising the question of whether this presentation may represent a distinct syndrome associated with orf virus infection in adult animals.
CASE PRESENTATION: In February 2024, an eleven-month-old lamb showed ex…

Malignant melanoma (MM) affects not only humans but also animals, with gray horses being particularly predisposed to acquiring the disease. Multiomics have greatly advanced the understanding of human MM. In contrasty little is known regarding the pathogenesis of gray-horse melanoma and the unique phenomenon of melanoma "dormancy" in some animals. To help close this gap in knowledge, melanoma tissue and intact skin collected from gray horses were subjected to transcriptome analysis using RNAseq. In the next step, cultured primary tumor cells and normal skin fibroblasts were established from gra

BACKGROUND: In the northwest of Morocco, coccidiosis, caused by a protozoan of the genus Eimeria sp., poses a threat to the health of livestock, particularly sheep, and can sometimes lead to the death of animals, thus damaging meat production in the kingdom of Morocco. The research on this disease will allow livestock farmers to identify the most important and widespread species in the region, as well as the risk factors that influence the spread of this epidemic, so that precautionary measures can be taken to protect livestock.
AIM: The objectives of this study were as follows:to inventory t…

AIMS: A survey of Salmonella in sheep caecal content samples was undertaken in England and Wales in 2023.
METHODS: Over 9 months, repeated sampling was conducted in 12 abattoirs that represented 28% of national annual sheep throughput with good geographical coverage. Samples of caecal content were obtained from 1228 sheep at abattoirs and cultured for Salmonella spp.
RESULTS: Salmonella was isolated from 104 (8.5%) samples, with 21 isolations (1.7%) of Salmonella Typhimurium. The most commonly isolated serovar (80 samples, 6.5%) was the sheep-adapted Salmonella enterica subspecies diarizonae…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the propofol-sparing and hemodynamic effects of guaifenesin administered for co-induction of anesthesia in sheep.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, blinded, two-way crossover experimental study.
ANIMALS: Thirteen healthy adult female sheep.
METHODS: Anesthesia was induced without premedication with intravenous (IV) guaifenesin 5% at 100 mg kg-1 (GGE) or an equivalent volume of physiologic saline (SAL), followed by IV propofol at a controlled rate (1 mg kg-1 min-1). Heart rate (HR), respiratory rate and oscillometric noninvasive arterial blood pressure (NIBP) were recorded at…

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular parasite that presents a worldwide risk. Humans can become infected by ingesting meat infected with T. gondii, and the consumption of infected sheep and goat meat is a significant public health issue. Antibodies against T. gondii have been found in sheep in Spain, indicating the presence of the parasite in the country. However, no previous studies have assessed the presence of T. gondii in sheep meat in Spain. In view of the significance of the transmission of T. gondii through meat consumption and given the lack…

Piroplasmoses in sheep are caused by vector-borne apicomplexan protozoa, Babesia and Theileria. Different species are responsible for the disease; some species are more pathogenic than others and have a worldwide distribution. In this sense, these causative agents can cause anaemia in flocks. In general, these vector-borne diseases infect small ruminants and cause host-mediated pathology. In the case of Babesia species, a combination of different mechanisms is involved: red blood cell lysis due to intracellular parasite multiplication, activation of biogenic amines and the coagulation system w…

Fasciola hepatica, Fasciola gigantica, and Fascioloides magna are liver flukes causing disease in cattle and sheep. Damage to the liver due to F hepatica and F gigantica results in clinical disease and/or production losses. F magna seems to have little effect in cattle but causes high mortality in sheep. The fluke life cycle involves an aquatic or amphibious snail intermediate host and thus requires suitable moisture and temperature conditions. F magna requires the presence of deer. Drug treatment is the mainstay of control and needs to be applied considering the life cycle and epidemiology of…

We review herein infections by Conidiobolus spp., Cryptococcus spp., and Aspergillus spp. in sheep and goats. Conidiobolus spp. are common causes of rhinitis in sheep and are less frequent in goats, in which Conidiobolus spp. also cause skin lesions. Cryptococcus spp. cause rhinitis, meningitis, encephalitis, and pneumonia in goats, and are rarely observed in sheep. Aspergillus spp. may cause rhinitis in goats, and pneumonia and mastitis in sheep and goats. Gross and microscopic lesions caused by these 3 fungal infections may be similar to each other. The diagnosis of these diseases must be ba…

Small ruminants are often presumed to be at a higher risk of developing obstructive urolithiasis after early castration. However, the underlying pathophysiology and histological correlation of this assumption is unknown. This study examines the neuropeptide distribution of the lower urinary tract in male lambs in respect to castration status or a recent history of obstructive urolithiasis. Various tissue samples were taken and examined. The sample consisted of 34 male lambs, aged six months (n = 11 early and n = 11 late castration; n = 12 intact), and 8 rams that had undergone necropsy due to

INTRODUCTION: The induction of a functional immune response against the four viral serotypes is one of the premises for an effective vaccine against Dengue virus. This is challenging since the immunization with four antigens leads to immunologic phenomena such as antigen interference, immuno-dominance, and tolerance. Moreover, the four serotypes have intrinsic features that impact the outcome after the immunization with a tetravalent formulation.
AREAS COVERED: This work reviews the main studies evidencing the differences between Dengue virus 4 and the rest of the serotypes. We address some p

In male small ruminants, voiding disturbances are not uncommon. A precise knowledge of the underlying disease is essential for prognostic evaluation as well as for a decision concerning the therapeutic approach. Common reasons for voiding disturbances in the male small ruminant are obstructive urolithiasis, traumata of the penis or inflammatory processes within the urethra or urinary bladder. The diagnostic method of choice - in addition to clinical examination - is diagnostic imaging. Because radiology is not always possible under field conditions, the aim of this article is a detailed presen

Scrapie in sheep occurs in two forms. Classical scrapie, along with chronic wasting disease in deer, differs from all other prion diseases in being contagious and occurring as propagating epidemics. By contrast, atypical scrapie occurs sporadically and like most other prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, is regarded as non-contagious under natural conditions. This difference motivates the present study, which uses the perspective of evolutionary biology to explore whether atypical or non-contagious scrapie can transform to classical or contagious scrapie when appropriat…

In this study, we assessed the prevalence and genetic characteristics of Cryptosporidium in sheep from 10 provinces in China. Fecal samples from 1,035 sheep originating from 16 farms were collected, and 295 (28.5%) were found to be Cryptosporidium positive by nested PCR. Cryptosporidium was detected at all farms, with infection rates between 5.7% and 50.0%. Three Cryptosporidium species were identified, including Cryptosporidium xiaoi (73.2%, 216/295), Cryptosporidium ubiquitum (21.7%, 64/295), and Cryptosporidium parvum (5.1%, 15/295). The distribution of Cryptosporidium species differed by p…
