Two-hundred and twenty-five strains of Shigella sonnei isolated from sporadic cases of bacillary dysentery were subjected to colicine typing. The result showed that types 15 and 12 were the prevailing types in Hong Kong and two new types which did not fit in with the colicine patterns of the current types were observed. Twenty-four Shigella strains of provisional serovars were isolated from travellers with diarrhea during 1993-2000 at Osaka Airport- and Kansai Airport-Quarantine Station. Serogrouping of 506 Shigella strains isolated in Singapore from 1986 to 1990 showed that Shigella flexneri (60.3%) was the most common, followed by S. sonnei (33.6%), S. boydii (3.2%) and S. dysenteriae (3%). We conducted a prospective, community-based study of healthy breast-fed Mexican infants to determine the protective effects of anti-Shigella secretory IgA antibodies in milk. Milk samples were collected monthly, and stool culture specimens were obtained weekly and at the time of episodes of diarrhea.
