Effects of heel height with backpack loading in young people.

BACKGROUND: There are many intrinsic and extrinsic factors that could affect posture. Two of them are backpack and heel height. The aim of t … static posture while carrying backpacks. The same measurements were taken and recorded conventional shoes with heel and forefoot heights. Postural analysis software (PAS/SAPO) was used to conduct angle assessments of the photos. RESULTS: Postural angles of the vertebral column on the cervical and lumbosacral regions are changed immediately up to the po …

Footwear affects the behavior of low back muscles when jogging.

Use of modified shoes and insole materials has been widely advocated to treat low back symptoms from running impacts, although considerable uncertainty remains regarding the effects of these devices on the rate of shock transmission to the spine. This study investigated the effects of shoes and insole materials on a) the rate of shock transmission to the spine, b) the temporal response of spinal musculature to impact loading, and c) the time interval between peak lumbar acceleration and peak lumbar muscle response. It was hypothesised that shoes and inserts a) decrease the rate of shock transm…

Effect of different forefoot rocker radii on lower-limb joint biomechanics in healthy individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies showed that rocker shoes with a stiff forefoot rocker profile significantly reduce peak plantar flexion moment at the ankle (PFM) and peak ankle dorsiflexion (DF). Both parameters are related to Achilles tendon and Plantar Fascia unloading. The shape of an outsole with a forefoot rocker is described with multiple rocker design parameters. The aim of this research is, to determine the relation between different forefoot rocker radii on peak DF and peak PFM at a self-selected walking speed. METHODS: 10 participants walked in standard shoes and three experimental p…

Foot pain in children.

A general approach to the child with foot pain has been described. In that the pediatrician is so often the recipient of parent's questions about children's shoes, he or she should be aware of problems relating to poorly fitting shoes, probably the most common source of complaints of foot pain in children. With a systematic approach, the pediatrician is very capable of managing the majority of such complaints.

Foot pain in children.

A general approach to the child with foot pain has been described. In that the pediatrician is so often the recipient of parent's questions about children's shoes, it is well for him to be aware of problems relating to poorly fitting shoes, probably the most common source of complaints of foot pain in children. With a systematic approach, the pediatrician is very capable of managing the majority of such complaints.

Advanced footwear technology in well-trained athletes: methodological insights from outdoor running.

BACKGROUND: Advanced footwear technology (AFT) is reported to elicit an approximate 4% average improvement in running economy (RE). However, … nical responses to the different shoe conditions were also highly variable. One of the advanced AFT shoes showed a greater strike angle (+2.07°; p = 0.001), with no other significant differences between shoes conditions. CONCLUSION: The large variability in the physiological response to AFT may be explained by methodological considerations. A minimum o …

The combined effect of short foot exercises and orthosis in symptomatic flexible flatfoot: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Flatfoot is a musculoskeletal problem associated with dysfunctional active and passive supporting structures of the normal foot curvature. Strengthening of the intrinsic foot muscles or using shoe orthosis are recommend treatment approaches. However, investigating the effect of combining both approaches is still warranted. AIM: To examine the effect of applying short foot exercises (SFE) combined with shoe insole versus shoe insole alone on foot pressure measures, pain, function and navicular drop in individuals with symptomatic flexible flatfoot. DESIGN: Prospective, active cont

May footwear be a predisposing factor for the development of hallux rigidus? A review of recent findings.

Hallux rigidus (HR) is the clinical manifestation of osteoarthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP1) joint and affects about 2.5% of … y HR. From the results of the studies, it appears that symptoms improve with rigid-soled low-heeled shoes such as boots and worsen with flat flexible-soled shoes such as sandals and tennis shoes, which should therefore be avoided. Despite this, although incorrect footwear increases symptoms, a direct correlation with the development of the condition has …

PURPOSE: To examine the influence of footwear on tibialis posterior (TP) activation in persons with pes planus. METHODS: Six asymptomatic a … ix subjects activated other lower-leg muscles in addition to TP. When wearing the foot orthoses and shoes, all five participants activated only TP. Additionally, activation of TP was higher when exercises were performed in shoes with orthoses than when barefoot (P = 0.019). CONCLUSION: Wearing the foot orthoses and shoes improved selective activation o …

Decreasing an Offloading Device's Size and Offsetting Its Imposed Limb-Length Discrepancy Lead to Improved Comfort and Gait.

OBJECTIVE: Patient adherence is a challenge in offloading diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) with removable cast walkers (RCWs). The size and weight of an RCW, changes to gait, and imposed limb-length discrepancies may all discourage adherence. This study sought to determine whether RCW size and provision of a contralateral limb lift affected users' comfort and gait. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Twenty-five individuals at risk for DFUs completed several 20-m walking trials under five footwear conditions: bilateral standardized shoes, a knee-high RCW with shoe with or without an external shoe lift co…

Gait changes with the use of Heelys: a case study.

Heelys shoes are a novel athletic shoe with a concealed wheel. They have been popular among youths since their introduction in 2000. This case study serves as a first look into the biomechanical implications of Heelys shoes on gait. Pressure readings of the forefoot, midfoot, and rearfoot during ambulation in regular athletic-shoe walking, Heelys without the wheel walking, Heelys with the wheel walking, and Heelys skating with the wheel were recorded on a single subject using the Pedar X System. A visual gait analysis was also performed on the subject. The resulting data show increased forefoo…

Accelerations due to impact at heel strike using below-knee prosthesis.

The acceleration in the sagittal plane of the prosthetic tube at heel strike in normal walking was measured in five healthy amputees with their definitive below-knee prosthesis, every subject using six different prosthetic feet, wearing sport shoes as well as leather shoes. The experiments were carried out in the rehabilitation centre "Het Roessingh", Enschede, The Netherlands. Maximum accelerations were extracted from the acceleration-time-signal. Mean acceleration maxima of all subjects were calculated for each foot-shoe combination to eliminate the individual influence of the subjects. In t…

Effects of Two Football Stud Types on Knee and Ankle Kinetics of Single-Leg Land-Cut and 180° Cut Movements on Infilled Synthetic Turf.

Higher ACL injury rates have been recorded in cleats with higher torsional resistance in American football, which warrants better understanding of shoe/stud-dependent joint kinetics. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in knee and ankle kinetics during single-leg land cuts and 180° cuts on synthetic infilled turf while wearing 3 types of shoes. Fourteen recreational football players performed single-leg land cuts and 180° cuts in nonstudded running shoes (RS) and in football shoes with natural (NTS) and synthetic turf studs (STS). Knee and ankle kinetic variables were analyz…

Functional dynamic prosthesis alignment maintained across varying footwear using a modular prosthetic ankle-feet system.

Changing footwear often presents a challenge for lower extremity prosthesis users. When prosthesis alignment is completed by the Certified Prosthetist, the prosthetic foot is set at an angle accommodating a single shoe heel rise (shoe heel height minus forefoot height); deviation from this heel rise causes misalignment of the prosthesis. To address this problem, the Rehabilitation & Engineering Center for Optimizing Veteran Engagement & Reintegration (RECOVER) has developed a modular ankle-feet system allowing for the use of footwear of varying heel rises without the need for realignment by th
