Associative effects of external buffers and plant secondary metabolites on ruminal fermentation during an induced subacute ruminal acidosis challenge in beef steers.

Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is a prevalent problem in cattle consuming highly fermentable diets. It was hypothesized that a novel feed additive (BRIC) containing alkaline salts and traces of plant secondary metabolites may modulate ruminal fermentation. The experiment evaluated four treatments during an induced SARA protocol. Treatments were (DM basis): 1) sodium bicarbonate at 1.2% (BICARB), 2) a commercial buffer at 1.2% (BRIC), 3) a blend of tannins and saponins at 0.15% (BXS), and 4) a combination of 1.2% BRIC plus 0.15% BXS (BRIC-BXS). Eight ruminally cannulated steers were used in a

Challenges in redirecting rumen hydrogen flow in vitro: insights from new hydrogenotrophic isolates.

BACKGROUND: Reducing methane (CH4) released from the rumen of cattle is essential for lowering greenhouse gas emissions from livestock. Methanogens, the archaea responsible for producing CH4, are the dominant hydrogen (H2) sink in the rumen. Hydrogen is a by-product of normal rumen fermentation, and increased H2 levels, resulting from inhibiting methanogenesis, may have negative effects on certain rumen fermentation processes. However, increased H2 levels may also open the possibility for H2 to be redirected into alternative pathways, harbored by H2-utilizing (hydrogenotrophic) bacteria that w

Effect of increasing organic loading rate on hydrolytic enzyme activities and microbial communities during anaerobic digestion of energy crops.

INTRODUCTION: Efficiency and stability of anaerobic digestion (AD) processes strongly depend on maintaining a balance between microbial conversion steps. Operational stress can disrupt this balance, leading to shifts in the microbial community, accumulation of intermediate metabolites, and changes in overall process performance. Therefore, the objective of the study was to better understand the role of hydrolysis and its interplay with subsequent conversion steps in the destabilization of the AD process during increasing organic loading rate (OLR). METHODS: To systematically investigate the r

Effect of body fatness and glucogenic supplement on lipid and protein mobilization and plasma leptin in dairy cows.

Twenty-four multiparous Ayrshire cows were used in an experiment to test the effect of body fatness and glucogenic supplement, fed during the transition period, on lipid and protein mobilization and plasma hormone concentrations. Eight weeks before their expected calving date, the cows were divided into blocks of 4. Two cows with the highest body condition score within each block were then allocated to a test (T) group and the other 2 cows to a control (C) group. To scale up the differences between fatter and thinner cows, the estimated energy allowance was 40% higher in group T than in group

Short-term feed restriction induces inflammation and an antioxidant response via cystathionine-β-synthase and glutathione peroxidases in ruminal epithelium from Angus steers.

Decreased intake is induced by stressors such as parturition, transportation, dietary transitions, and disease. An important function of one-carbon metabolism (OCM) is to produce the antioxidant glutathione to help reduce oxidative stress. Although various components of OCM are expressed in the bovine rumen and small intestine, the relationship between reduced feed intake, OCM, and antioxidant mechanisms in gut tissues is unknown. This study aimed to assess alterations in immune and antioxidant pathways in ruminal epithelium due to acute feed restriction (FR). Seven group-housed ruminally cann

Issues of Feeding Strategy for Lactating Cows in Vietnamese Smallholder Dairy Farms.

A limited literature suggests relatively simple feeding regimes and diet formulation strategies for dairy cows in Vietnamese smallholder dairy farms (SDFs). This study aimed to classify and compare feeding regimes and nutrient balance for lactating cows between four typical dairy regions (south lowland, south highland, north lowland, and north highland) in Vietnam and evaluate the possibility of systematic dietary imbalance. Eight SDFs from each of the four regions were visited for two adjacent milking periods per farm. For each visit, frequency and methods of feed and water supply to the lact

Biological implications of longevity in dairy cows: 2. Changes in methane emissions and efficiency with age.

Previous studies indicated that absolute CH4 emissions and CH4 yield might increase and that milk production efficiency might decrease with age in cattle. Both would make strategies to increase longevity in dairy cattle less attractive. These aspects were experimentally determined in Brown Swiss cattle distributed continuously across a large age range. Thirty lactating dairy cows (876-3,648 d of age) received diets consisting of hay, corn silage, and grass pellets supplemented with 0 or 5kg of concentrate per day. Twelve heifers (199-778 d of age) received hay only. Cows and heifers were membe

Testing preference for corn milling coproducts by lactating Jersey cows.

Manipulations at the intersection of nutrition, behavior, and management may be an important way to apply novel feeding strategies that take advantage of affordable feeds and a cow's natural behavior to increase feed intake. The grain fuel sector continues to modify methods for how corn ethanol is produced. This has resulted in different feed coproducts that can be utilized by the dairy industry. The objective of this study was to determine how preferences of various corn milling coproducts differ and also compare them with corn grain. Eight lactating Jersey cows (169 ± 4 DIM, 29.7 ± 4.55 kg/d

Calcium salts of long-chain fatty acids from linseed oil decrease methane production by altering the rumen microbiome in vitro.

Calcium salts of long-chain fatty acids (CSFA) from linseed oil have the potential to reduce methane (CH4) production from ruminants; however, there is little information on the effect of supplementary CSFA on rumen microbiome as well as CH4 production. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of supplementary CSFA on ruminal fermentation, digestibility, CH4 production, and rumen microbiome in vitro. We compared five treatments: three CSFA concentrations-0% (CON), 2.25% (FAL) and 4.50% (FAH) on a dry matter (DM) basis-15 mM of fumarate (FUM), and 20 mg/kg DM of monensin (MON).

Metagenomic characterization of the cecal microbiota community and functions in finishing pigs fed fermented Boehmeria nivea.

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea, BN) is used as livestock forage through suitable silage fermentation owing to its nutritional value. To date, relatively few studies have investigated the effects of dietary fermented BN (FBN) on gut health in finishing pigs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with 20% FBN on intestinal morphology, gene expression, and the functional response of the gut microbiota in finishing pigs. We found that FBN did not significantly affect serum antioxidant enzyme activities, ileal morphology, or the expression of genes encoding

Potential use of garlic products in ruminant feeding: A review.

The addition of antibiotics as growth promoters to ruminant feed can result in bacterial resistance and antibiotic residues in ruminant products. Correspondingly, there is serious public concern regarding the presence of antibiotic residue in ruminant products and the consequent threat to human health. As a result, the addition of plants and their products to ruminant feeds, as an alternative to antibiotics, has received much attention recently. Garlic and its products are rich in organosulphur compounds, which have a variety of biological activities and have been widely used as natural additi

Seasonal effects on ruminal fermentation and greenhouse gas emission patterns in non-lactating crossbred Saanen goats under tropical conditions: Evidence from respiratory chamber measurements.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: High ambient temperature (HTa) associated with climate change poses challenges to livestock production and exacerbates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in a self-perpetuating cycle. While HTa influences ruminal fermentation and enteric methane (CH₄) emissions in dairy cows, data on long-term seasonal HTa effects in heat-adapted tropical dairy goats under natural conditions remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate seasonal HTa effects on ruminal fermentation patterns, physiological responses, and daily CO₂ and CH₄ emissions in non-lactating crossbred Saanen goats using res

Inclusion of rapeseed cake or oil in the diet of beef cattle reduces enteric methane emissions without affecting animal performance.

The global methane (CH4) pledge aims to reduce anthropogenic CH4 emissions by 30% by 2030. Oilseed rape (Brassica napus L), a break crop with 40 million ha cultivated globally in 2022, produces fatty acid-rich by-products that could potentially reduce rumen methanogenesis while enhancing meat fat composition. The study objective was to examine the effects of fatty acid supplementation from rapeseed ingredients on DM intake (DMI), average daily gain, gaseous emissions, haematology, rumen fermentation pattern, and fatty acid content of the longissimus dorsi muscle of beef cattle fed a mixed fora

Methionine-balanced diets modulate the fatty acid profile of beef.

Methionine plays a central role in methyl metabolism and glutathione synthesis, and its availability can influence the partitioning of methyl groups toward lipid metabolism and antioxidant defenses. Manipulating methionine supply may therefore affect muscle fatty acid desaturation-elongation pathways and oxidative stability. However, few studies have examined the effects of rumen-protected methionine (RPM) supplementation on the lipid profile and antioxidant status of beef. Therefore, our study investigated how RPM supplementation affects the fatty acid (FA) composition and antioxidant status
