Sleep disturbance has the largest impact on children's behavior and emotions.

OBJECTIVE: Children's behavior and emotions are affected by sleep disturbances, the parent-child relationship, media viewing time, and the social status of parents and caregivers. We conducted a questionnaire survey to identify the factors that have the greatest impact on children's behavior and emotions and how these factors relate to each other. METHODS: A parental questionnaire survey was performed at a public elementary school. The questionnaire comprised questions on the family environment (e.g., family structure, media and game exposure, after-school lessons, and caregiver's work schedu

Preventing seat belt unbuckling in an individual with autism and ADHD: a case study.

BACKGROUND: Vehicular accidents are a leading cause of mortality among adolescents and young adults. The American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) advocates for seatbelt use to reduce injuries and fatalities. Individuals with special needs, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and developmental disabilities, present unique transportation safety challenges like frequent unbuckling. Despite increasing availability and use of aftermarket products designed to prevent unbuckling, their real-world effectiveness remains understudied. PURPOSE: This pr

Identification and validation of an explainable screening model of college students' mental health with therapeutic strategy implications.

Mental health issues, especially depressive symptoms, among young adults represent a public health challenge. Conventional psychological assessment tools have limited sensitivity and specificity for identifying individuals at risk. This study aims to develop an explainable machine learning-based model to stratify concurrent depression risk in young adults. This study included 100,257 college students and collected mental health variables including depression, anxiety, resilience, parent-child relationship, and duration of mobile phone usage. The screening capabilities of 13 machine learning al

Family phenotypic profile in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia: genotype-phenotype correlation in a pediatric Italian population.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare, hereditary, autosomal dominant vascular disease, characterized by visceral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), mucocutaneous telangiectasias and epistaxis. While symptomatic medical and surgical therapies are used in the management of pediatric patients, data comparing phenotypic presentation between genetically related individuals (e.g., parent-child pairs) remain limited. AIMS AND METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study involving pediatric patients with genetically confirmed HHT and their affected parents a

Self-Reported Multidimensional Gender Identity in Autistic and Non-Autistic Children.

ABSRACT: PURPOSE: The several prior studies assessing gender identity in young autistic individuals mostly included a mix of child and adolescent participants, heavily relied on parent-reported measures, and yielded mixed findings. A single parent-reported item from the Child Behavior Checklist assessing "wish to be of the opposite sex" was employed in most of these studies. Only one prior study focused specifically on children, but that study employed parent-reported measures. METHODS: Using self-reported multidimensional measures, the present study assessed gender identity in autistic and n…

Determining minimal clinically important differences in the North Star Ambulatory Assessment (NSAA) for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

The North Star ambulatory assessment (NSAA) is a functional motor outcome measure in Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), widely used in clinical trials and natural history studies, as well as in clinical practice. However, little has been reported on the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of the NSAA. The lack of established MCID estimates for NSAA presents challenges in interpreting the significance of the results of this outcome measure in clinical trials, natural history studies and clinical practice. Combining statistical approaches and patient perspectives, this study estimated

Making and Breaking of Gels: Stimuli-Responsive Properties of Bis(Pyridyl-N-oxide Urea) Gelators.

The structural modification of existing supramolecular architecture is an efficient strategy to design and synthesize supramolecular gels with tunable and predictable properties. In this work, we have modified bis(pyridyl urea) compounds with different linkers, namely hexylene and butylene, to their corresponding bis(pyridyl-N-oxide urea). The gelation properties of both the parent and the modified compounds were studied, and the results indicated that modification of the 3-pyridyl moieties to the corresponding 3-pyridyl-N-oxides induced hydrogelation. The stability of the parent and modified

Patient and Parent-Reported Signs and Symptoms for Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Identifying symptomatic patients who are at low risk for group A streptococcal (GAS) pharyngitis could reduce unnecessary visits and antibiotic use. The accuracy with which patients and parents report signs and symptoms of GAS has not been studied. Our objectives were to measure agreement between patient or parent and physician-reported signs and symptoms of GAS and to evaluate the performance of a modified Centor score, based on patient or parent and physician reports, for identifying patients at low risk for GAS pharyngitis. METHODS: Children 3 to 21 years old pre

An efficacy study of a combined parent and teacher management training programme for children with ADHD.

BACKGROUND: Several parent training programmes and behavioural teacher training programmes built on learning theory have been developed for problem prevention and treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and/or oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) during the last few decades. Group format has often been used for parent training but single-subject designs are more common in teacher training. More studies have focussed on pre-school children than on older children, and a minority have been conducted in public mental health settings. AIM: This study aimed to evaluate a combine

Pharmacokinetics and O-dealkylation of morphine-3-alkyl ethers in the rat. A radioimmunoassay study.

Radioimmunoassay procedures were used to investigate the relationship between the chemical structure and disposition of morphine, codeine, ethylmorphine, t-butylmorphine, and pholcodine. Male Sprague-Dawley rats received po or iv doses of each drug equivalent to 10 mg/kg free base. Blood samples were collected at various times over the 6-hr period after each drug administration, and plasma concentrations of the parent drugs and metabolically produced morphine were determined. A single ethylmorphine antiserum was used for analysis of codeine, ethylmorphine, t-butylmorphine, and pholcodine in se

Writing abilities longitudinally predict academic outcomes of adolescents with ADHD.

Students with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience a host of negative academic outcomes, and deficits in reading and mathematics abilities contribute to these academic impairments. Students with ADHD may also have difficulties with written expression, but there has been minimal research in this area and it is not clear whether written expression abilities uniquely contribute to the academic functioning of students with ADHD. The current study included a sample of 104 middle school students diagnosed with ADHD (Grades 6-8). Participants were followed longitudinally t
