Acral skin vasoreactivity and thermosensitivity to hand cooling following 5 days of intermittent whole body cold exposure.

We sought to examine whether short-term, whole body cold acclimation would modulate finger vasoreactivity and thermosensitivity to localized cooling. Fourteen men were equally assigned to either the experimental (CA) or the control (CON) group. The CA group was immersed to the chest in 14°C water for ≤120 min daily over a 5-day period while the skin temperature of the right-hand fingers was clamped at ∼35.5°C. The CON group was instructed to avoid any cold exposure during this period. Before and after the intervention, both groups performed, on two different consecutive days, a local cold prov…

Influence of exercise intensity and regional differences in the sudomotor recruitment pattern in exercising prepubertal boys and young men.

We investigated the influence of exercise intensities and regional differences in the sudomotor recruitment pattern in boys. Six prepubertal boys (age 11 ± 1 yr) cycled at light, moderate, and high exercise intensity (35%, 50%, and 65% VO2max) for 30 min in a temperate condition (28 °C, 40% relative humidity). Local sweat rate (ventilated capsule) and number of activated sweat glands (starch-iodine technique) at five body sites were assessed and sweat gland output was calculated. Responses in boys were compared with those in nine young men (23 ± 1 yr) tested under identical conditions. The for

Critical water temperature during water immersion at various atmospheric pressures.

The present work was undertaken to determine the effect of atmospheric pressure [ranging from a high altitude of 4,300 m above sea level or 0.6 atmospheres absolute (ATA) to depths of 10 m deep or 2 ATA] on the critical water temperature (Tcw), defined as the lowest water temperature a subject can tolerate at rest for 2 h without shivering, of the unprotected subject during water immersion. Nine healthy males wearing only shorts were subjected to immersion to the neck in water at 0.6, 1, and 2 ATA while resting for 2 h. Continuous measurements included esophageal (Tes) and skin (Tsk) temperatu

[Frostbite animal model preparation specification(draft)].

Frostbite is a common disease in winter, and systemic or local injury caused by low temperature invasion. Frostbite sites are commonly face, ears, nose, hands, feet and other peripheral blood circulation parts. The main symptoms are pale skin, cold, pain and numbness, skin itching in high temperature, and severe cases may suffer from skin erosions and ulcers. Frostbite model is a pathological model mainly based on Western medicine index. Based on the analysis of clinical symptoms of frostbite in traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine, and a large number of experimental studies on th

Effects of selective cutaneous denervation on hypothalamic thermosensitivity in rats.

The effect of altering input from cutaneous thermoreceptors of the face and trunk on the relationship between hypothalamic temperature (Thy) and heat production (HP) was studied in three rats. The signal from cutaneous receptors was altered in two ways: by altering skin temperature (Tsk) and by sectioning nerves supplying cutaneous receptors. It was found that when Tsk was lowered in normal rats Thy threshold for thermoregulatory HP was elevated, but the slope of the relationship between Thy and HP was not significantly altered. After the spinal nerves serving the trunk skin were sectioned, th…

Behavioral and physiological responses to short-term cold exposure in calves carrying the SLICK1 allele.

The SLICK1 genetic variant, originally identified in Senepol cattle, enhances heat tolerance in association with a short hair coat. The improved heat tolerance is linked to an increased ability to lose heat, which may lead to increased cold susceptibility in colder, winter environments. Our objective was to measure the thermoregulatory responses of Friesian-Jersey crossbred SLICK1 carriers and control calves during short-term, controlled, cold challenges over 2 yr. These were allocated into groups of 4 (2 slicks and 2 controls), penned individually, and subjected to acute cold temperatures (-4

A 3-D whole-body human thermoregulatory model to simulate extreme cold stress.

Prolonged exposure to Arctic-like conditions can lead to adverse physiological outcomes, significantly affecting the health, performance, and operational readiness of civilians and military personnel. In this study, we extended our previously developed, anatomically realistic, three-dimensional thermoregulatory virtual human model to more comprehensively predict changes in core body temperature and skin temperature of peripheral body regions (dorsum hand, fingertip, face, dorsum foot, and toe-tip) and the cheek under extreme cold-air temperatures down to -40.0 °C and wind speeds ranging from 0…

Thermal inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes during a process simulating temperatures achieved during microwave heating.

Conventional heating was used to expose cells of Listeria monocytogenes, either in broth or in situ on chicken skin, to the mean times and temperatures that are achieved during a 28 min period of microwave cooking of a whole chicken. Heating L. monocytogenes by this method in culture broth resulted in a reduction in viable cell numbers by a factor of greater than 10(6) upon reaching 70 degrees C. Simulated microwave cooking of L. monocytogenes in situ, on chicken skin, resulted in more variability in the numbers of survivors. Heating for the full cook time of 28 min, however, resulted in a mea

The relationship between α1-adrenergic receptors and TRPM8 channels in detrusor overactivity induced by cold stress in ovariectomized rats.

PURPOSE: We studied whether cold stress induced detrusor overactivity in ovariectomized rats is associated with increased thermosensitive TRPM8 channel expression in the skin and whether the response could be inhibited by α1-adrenergic receptor blockade. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 Sprague-Dawley® rats at postnatal week 30 were randomly selected for ovariectomy (16) or sham ovariectomy (8). Five weeks later cystometric measurements of conscious, freely moving rats were made at room temperature (mean ± SEM 28C ± 2C) for 20 minutes. Eight ovariectomized rats were intravenously administ

The use of body surface temperatures in assessing thermal status of hutch-reared dairy calves in shaded and unshaded conditions.

The study was carried out in a Hungarian large-scale dairy farm during a 5-day period in hot August weather. Altogether 16 preweaning calves … oups imposed a severe heat load on the calves. The temperature of the body shell, as represented by skin temperatures, shows a much more significant variation, similar to ambient temperature. As expected, areas that are closer to the core of the body (ear and eye) show less difference from rectal temperature and show a narrower range (lower variance), as more dist …

[Role of brain biogenic amines in the central thermoregulatory mechanism of the rat (author's transl)].

Changes in rectal and skin temperatures following intraventricular injection of biogenic amines and related substances were investigated in rats. Intraventricular injection of norepinephrine in a small dose (6 mug) produced a slight elevation of rectal temperature, but in larger amounts (25-50 mug) resulted in a dose-dependent hypothermia which was associated with a marked rise of skin temperature. No change was observed in plasma free fatty acid and glucose levels and oxygen consumption after intraventricular injection of norepinephrine (25 mug). Intraventricular injection of imipramine and s…

[The individual measuring of the health-promoting impact of the sauna on preschoolers].

The paper deals with the role of individual grading of heat loading when preschool children take a sauna. The adaptative reserves of the child's body were determined by thermal imaging just during exposure in the thermal chamber. The time course of the maximum skin temperature, which was determined by a thermal imaging computer, was used as an informative indicator. The degree of adaptative reserve exhaustion was calculated by approaching to the extreme (maximum) temperature, by the degree reduction in the efficiency of heat emission through diaphoresis and by the rate of maximum skin temperat…

Thermosensation and TRP Channels.

Somatosensory neurons can sense external temperature by converting sensation of temperature information to neural activity via afferent input to the central nervous system. Various populations of somatosensory neurons have specialized gene expression, including expression of thermosensitive transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels. Thermosensitive TRP channels are responsible for thermal transduction at the peripheral ends of somatosensory neurons and can sense a wide range of temperatures. Here we focus on several thermosensitive TRP channels including TRPV1, TRPV4, TRPM2, TRPM3, TRPM8

The Effects of 10-Minute Outdoor Cold-Water Immersion on Postural Stability.

INTRODUCTION: Decreased body temperature after accidental cold-water immersion can impair fine motor control, muscular function, and cognition. Similar impairments to postural stability could further increase the risk of musculoskeletal injury before a complete recovery is made. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how changes in core temperature, skin temperature, and shivering magnitude after cold-water immersion impact postural stability. We also sought to assess how those outcomes recovered following active rewarming. We hypothesized that relatively colder foot temperature, lower core…
