GC-MS-Based Analysis of Methanol: Chloroform-extracted Fatty Acids from Plant Tissues.

Fatty acids (FAs) are carboxylic acids with long aliphatic chains that may be straight, branched and saturated or unsaturated. Most of the naturally occurring plant FAs contains an even number of carbon (C4-C24). FAs are used in food and pharmacological industries due to their nutritional importance. In addition, FAs are considered as a promising alternative for the production of biodiesel from terrestrial plant biomass. To establish commercial applications, more reliable analytical methods are needed for the identification, quantification, and composition determination of FAs. Here, we descri

Geographic differences in hepatosplenic complications of schistosomiasis mansoni and explanatory factors of morbidity.

In a study in three neighbouring villages of southern Madagascar, where Schistosoma mansoni is hyperendemic, ultrasound examination using the Niamey protocol showed marked differences in the burden of disease from one village to another. Hepatosplenic schistosomiasis was more frequent in the village with the highest geometric mean egg counts and the earliest onset of infections, demonstrating that the morbidity induced by S. mansoni may vary greatly within a given area. True representativeness of study populations, a keystone of epidemiological studies, is mandatory to obtain a clear picture o

Small airways dysfunction: The importance of utilising Z-scores to define MMEF abnormalities in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: The small airways comprise the largest cross-sectional area of the lungs, however, assessing and reporting abnormalities for this region of the bronchial tree has been practically and scientifically uncertain. METHODS: Using routinely collected spirometry data for patients with either asthma or COPD, the accuracy of % predicted values for defining small airways dysfunction was assessed. A z-score of ≤ -1.645 of the maximal-mid expiratory flow (MMEF) was used as the gold standard for defining abnormality in the small airways. RESULTS: Records of 3396 patients were included in the

Suggested cutoff tumor size for management of small EUS-suspected gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Although the incidence of asymptomatic small gastric submucosal tumors increased gradually with routine medical health examination, there was little clinical evidence for management consensus in these small gastric submucosal tumors including endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-suspected gastric gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). We investigated the clinical course of small EUS-suspected gastric GISTs and propose a cutoff value of tumor size for treatment policy. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 50 patients with EUS-suspected gastric GISTs of sizes less than 3 cm were e

In vivo evidence for interferon-gamma-mediated homeostatic mechanisms in small intestine of the NHE3 Na+/H+ exchanger knockout model of congenital diarrhea.

Mice lacking NHE3, the major absorptive Na(+)/H(+) exchanger in the intestine, are the only animal model of congenital diarrhea. To identify molecular changes underlying compensatory mechanisms activated in chronic diarrheas, cDNA microarrays and Northern blot analyses were used to compare global mRNA expression patterns in small intestine of NHE3-deficient and wild-type mice. Among the genes identified were members of the RegIII family of growth factors, which may contribute to the increased absorptive area, and a large number of interferon-gamma-responsive genes. The latter finding is of par

Calcium carbimide--ethanol interaction.

Each of 4 male alcoholic subjects received 0.7 mg/kg calcium carbimide (CC) orally 12 hr before ingestion of 0.25 gm/kg ethanol on 3 separate occasions. The CC-ethanol interaction consisted of increased blood acetaldehyde level and elevated heart rate. For each individual there was small variability in the area under the curve (AUC) values of the blood ethanol level--time course profiles for the 3 experiments, indicating a consistent extent of ethanol absorption. For subjects 1, 2, and 3 there was appreciable intraindividual variability in the AUC and the peak blood acetaldehyde levels of the

Deep learning and capsule endoscopy: automatic identification and differentiation of small bowel lesions with distinct haemorrhagic potential using a convolutional neural network.

OBJECTIVE: Capsule endoscopy (CE) is pivotal for evaluation of small bowel disease. Obscure gastrointestinal bleeding most often originates from the small bowel. CE frequently identifies a wide range of lesions with different bleeding potentials in these patients. However, reading CE examinations is a time-consuming task. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are highly efficient artificial intelligence tools for image analysis. This study aims to develop a CNN-based model for identification and differentiation of multiple small bowel lesions with distinct haemorrhagic potential using CE images

Radiomics for intracerebral hemorrhage: are all small hematomas benign?

OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that not all small hematomas are benign and that radiomics could predict hematoma expansion (HE) and short-term outcomes in small hematomas. METHODS: We analyzed 313 patients with small (<10 ml) intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) who underwent baseline non-contrast CT within 6 h of symptom onset between September 2013 and February 2019. Poor outcome was defined as a Glasgow Outcome Scale score ≤3. A radiomic model and a clinical model were built using least absolute shrinkageand selection operator algorithm or multivariate analysis. A combined model that incorporated t

Small cell carcinoma of the gallbladder: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular pathology study of 12 cases.

Small cell carcinomas of the gallbladder are unusual neoplasms that have been characterized only recently. The authors describe the clinical, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular features of 12 small cell carcinomas of the gallbladder. The mean age at diagnosis was 69 years, and the male-to-female ratio was 5:7. The neoplasms had an average size of 3 cm, and 90% showed invasion of the muscularis propria and perimuscular connective tissue. Seventy-five percent of the carcinomas had metastasized or extended locally beyond the gallbladder at surgery. Survival was uniformly poor, wi

Brain areas involved in perception of biological motion.

These experiments use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to reveal neural activity uniquely associated with perception of biological motion. We isolated brain areas activated during the viewing of point-light figures, then compared those areas to regions known to be involved in coherent-motion perception and kinetic-boundary perception. Coherent motion activated a region matching previous reports of human MT/MST complex located on the temporo-parieto-occipital junction. Kinetic boundaries activated a region posterior and adjacent to human MT previously identified as the kinetic-occip

Human factors project: development of computer models of anatomy as an aid to risk management.

Behavioral studies and reports in the pediatric medical literature suggest that children, particularly those younger than 4 years, frequently place foreign objects such as toys and small parts of consumer products in their mouths, nasal cavities and ear canals. These actions not infrequently lead to injury or death. Accurate models of the anatomical areas most often severely injured by foreign body impaction (oral cavity, orbit, ear canal and nasal passages) would greatly facilitate assessment of the risks of impaction. Because models of these anatomic regions in children of the ages when they

Topical Ruxolitinib in the Treatment of Necrobiosis Lipoidica: A Prospective, Open-Label Study.

Necrobiosis lipoidica (NL) is a rare granulomatous disease. There are few effective treatments for NL. We sought to investigate the efficacy and safety of the Jak1/2 inhibitor, ruxolitnib, in the treatment of NL and identify the biomarkers associated with the disease and treatment response. We conducted an open-label, phase 2 study of ruxolitinib in 12 patients with NL. We performed transcriptomic analysis of tissue samples before and after treatment. At week 12, the mean NL lesion score decreased by 58.2% (SD = 28.7%, P = .003). Transcriptomic analysis demonstrated enrichment of type I and ty

Rapid detection of Brugia malayi in mosquito vectors using a real-time fluorescence resonance energy transfer PCR and melting curve analysis.

We developed real-time fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) combined with melting curve analysis for detection of Brugia malayi DNA in blood-fed mosquitoes. Real-time FRET PCR is based on a fluorescence melting curve analysis of hybrid formed between amplicons generated from a family of repeated DNA element, 153-bp HhaI repeated sequence, specific to genus Brugia and specific fluorophore-labeled probes. The B. malayi-infected mosquitoes were differentiated from Wuchereria bancrofti-infected and uninfected mosquitoes and from genomic DNA of Dirofilaria i

Is congenital bony stenosis of the cervical spine associated with congenital bony stenosis of the thoracic spine? An anatomic study of 1072 human cadaveric specimens.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Tandem stenosis of the cervical and lumbar spine is known to occur in 5% of individuals with symptomatic neural compression in one region. However, the prevalence of concurrent cervical and thoracic stenosis is not known. Whether this relationship is due to an increased risk of degenerative disease in these individuals, or whether this finding is due to the tandem presence of a congenitally small cervical and thoracic canal is unknown. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of concurrent thoracic and cervical stenosis and whether the presence of stenosis in the ce

Arthroscopic Debridement vs Bone Marrow Stimulation for Small Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus: A Retrospective Matched Study of Outcomes for Lesions <60 mm.

BACKGROUND: Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) are common ankle injuries, even small OLTs (≤100 mm2) cause pain, swelling, and reduced mobility if untreated, yet an optimal treatment standard remains elusive. This study aimed to compare the midterm outcomes of arthroscopic debridement (AD) and bone marrow stimulation (BMS) techniques for small-sized OLTs and to determine possible association between lesion size and clinical efficacy. METHODS: Patients with small-sized OLTs who received AD or BMS were retrospectively analyzed, with a minimum follow-up of 36 months. A 1:1 propensity scor
