Stimuli-responsive polymer-based nanosystems for cardiovascular disease theranostics.

Stimulus-responsive polymers have found widespread use in biomedicine due to their ability to alter their own structure in response to various stimuli, including internal factors such as pH, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and enzymes, as well as external factors like light. In the context of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), stimulus-response polymers have been extensively employed for the preparation of smart nanocarriers that can deliver therapeutic and diagnostic drugs specifically to inflammatory lesions. Compared with traditional drug delivery systems, stimulus-responsive na

Color-Tunable, Excitation-Dependent, and Water Stimulus-Responsive Room-Temperature Phosphorescence Cellulose for Versatile Applications.

Smart-response materials with ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are highly desirable, but they have rarely been described, especially those originating from sustainable polymers. Herein, a variety of cellulose derivatives with 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) rings are synthesized through the Hantzsch reaction, giving impressive RTP with a long lifetime of up to 1251 ms. Specifically, the introduction of acetoacetyl groups and DHP rings promotes the spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing process; and multiple interactions between cellulose induce clustering and inhibit the nonrad

Remodeling of the osteoimmune microenvironment after biomaterials implantation in murine tibia: Single-cell transcriptome analysis.

Osseointegration seems to be a foreign body reaction equilibrium due to the complicated interactions between the immune and skeletal systems. The heterogeneity of the osteoimmune microenvironment in the osseointegration of implant materials remains elusive. Here, a single-cell study involving 40043 cells is conducted, and a total of 10 distinct cell clusters are identified from five different groups. A preliminary description of the osteoimmune microenvironment revealed the diverse cellular heterogeneity and dynamic changes modulated by implant properties. The increased immature neutrophils, L

Sustainability of the dissemination of an occupational sun protection program in a randomized trial.

Sustainability of an occupational sun safety program, Go Sun Smart (GSS), was explored in a randomized trial, testing dissemination strategies at 68 U.S. and Canadian ski areas in 2004-2007. All ski areas received GSS from the National Ski Areas Association through a Basic Dissemination Strategy (BDS) using conference presentations and free materials. Half of the ski areas were randomly assigned to a theory-based Enhanced Dissemination Strategy (EDS) with personal contact supporting GSS use. GSS use was assessed at immediate and long-term follow-up posttests by on-site observation. Use of GSS

Smart stimuli-responsive strategies for titanium implant functionalization in bone regeneration and therapeutics.

With the increasing and aging of global population, there is a dramatic rise in the demand for implants or substitutes to rehabilitate bone-related disorders which can considerably decrease quality of life and even endanger lives. Though titanium and its alloys have been applied as the mainstream material to fabricate implants for load-bearing bone defect restoration or temporary internal fixation devices for bone fractures, it is far from rare to encounter failed cases in clinical practice, particularly with pathological factors involved. In recent years, smart stimuli-responsive (SSR) strate

Advancing Scaffold-Assisted Modality for In Situ Osteochondral Regeneration: A Shift From Biodegradable to Bioadaptable.

Over the decades, the management of osteochondral lesions remains a significant yet unmet medical challenge without curative solutions to date. Owing to the complex nature of osteochondral units with multi-tissues and multicellularity, and inherently divergent cellular turnover capacities, current clinical practices often fall short of robust and satisfactory repair efficacy. Alternative strategies, particularly tissue engineering assisted with biomaterial scaffolds, achieve considerable advances, with the emerging pursuit of a more cost-effective approach of in situ osteochondral regeneration

Unveiling Peritoneum Membrane for a Robust Triboelectric Nanogenerator.

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are smart alternative energy harvesters to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy to power small and portable electronic devices. A key challenge in fabricating an efficient TENG lies in the choice of an active material in addition to the mechanical stability and robust output performance of the device. This report suggests, for the first time, the use of a peritoneum membrane as a triboelectrically positive material for designing TENGs. The peritoneum covers the abdominal wall and diaphragm of mammals except for the kidneys and the adrenal glands

When 1+1>2: Nanostructured composites for hard tissue engineering applications.

Multicomponent, synergistic and multifunctional nanostructures have taken over the spotlight in the realm of biomedical nanotechnologies. The most prospective materials for bone regeneration today are almost exclusively composites comprising two or more components that compensate for the shortcomings of each one of them alone. This is quite natural in view of the fact that all hard tissues in the human body, except perhaps the tooth enamel, are composite nanostructures. This review article highlights some of the most prospective breakthroughs made in this research direction, with the hard tiss

Semi-crystalline Methacrylate Hydrogels for Multistage Solar and Thermal-Radiative Regulation.

Passive smart windows require materials that combine high daylight transparency, strong solar-heat shielding, thermal buffering, mechanical robustness, and cycling stability without external energy input. Here, we report a semi-crystalline hydrogel that couples stearyl methacrylate (SMA) side-chain crystallization/melting with oligo(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (OEGMA) lower critical solution temperature phase separation through 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) crosslinking. This dual-phase program generates three adaptive states: low-temperature latent-heat release with a temper

Crystallography and spin-crossover. A view of breathing materials.

The spin-crossover phenomenon (SCO) is a fascinating field that potentially concerns any material containing a (d(4)-d(7)) transition metal complex finding therefore an echo in as diverse research fields as chemistry, physics, biology and geology. Particularly, molecular and coordination-polymers SCO solids are thoroughly investigated since their bistability promises new routes towards a large panel of potential applications including smart pigments, optical switches or memory devices. Notwithstanding these motivating applicative targets, numerous fundamental aspects of SCO are still debated.

Sulfur-Oxygen Competitive Coordination Allosteric Hydrogel for Triboelectric Nanogenerator-Based Intelligent Tactile Recognition.

Flexible sensing technologies based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) have shown promise for wearable electronics and human‑machine interaction. However, existing hydrogel‑based TENGs suffer from an inherent trade‑off between interfacial adhesion and electrical output, and their material recognition capability is compromised in real‑wearing environments due to signal variations. Here, the authors propose a smart glove system integrating a dynamic Ag+─S coordinated hydrogel with a machine‑learning‑based material recognition framework. Inspired by biological allostery, a "sulfur‑oxygen comp

Fabricating Thermoconductive Phase-Change Fiber via Solvent-Regulated Encapsulation in Carbon Nanotube Network.

Personal thermal management (PTM) systems are pivotal for energy-efficient thermal regulation. However, conventional phase change fibers (PCFs) are limited by insufficient latent heat capacity and phase change materials (PCMs) leakage. To address these challenges, we encapsulated polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a phase change material within a continuous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network by coagulation bath solvent regulation. After optimizing the CNTs network contraction effect by controlling the ethanol (EtOH)/water content ratio, the resultant PEG/CNTFs(50wt%EtOH) (obtained from a 50 wt % EtOH c
