Clear-cell epithelioid leiomyoma of the round ligament.

A case of clear-cell epithelioid leiomyoma of the round ligament in a 69-year-old woman is described. The neoplasm presented as a firm left inguinal mass. A preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated an enhancing lesion extending extra-abdominally from the region of the external inguinal ring. The surgical resection specimen was tan-white, well-circumscribed, and measured 5.8 cm in maximum dimension. Microscopic examination revealed a well-demarcated neoplasm comprised of polygonal cells with abundant clear cytoplasm arranged in clusters and single files with abundant intervening

A limited immunocytochemical panel for the distinction of subepithelial gastrointestinal mesenchymal neoplasms sampled by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration.

We studied the use of immunocytochemical analysis with material procured by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-guided FNA) for the diagnosis of subepithelial intramural gastrointestinal (GI) mesenchymal neoplasms (SIGIMNs). We identified all EUS-guided FNA specimens of SIGIMNs that had undergone immunocytochemical analysis. Results were compared with follow-up histologic diagnoses. There were 95 aspirates that were diagnosed as GI mesenchymal tumors (GI stromal tumors [GISTs], n = 46), leiomyomas (n = 38), peripheral nerve sheath tumors (n = 5), and other neoplasms by cyt

Conservative surgical treatment of tongue hemangiopericytoma.

Hemangiopericytoma is a vascular tumor that is believed to arise from the Zimmermann's pericytes, smooth muscles cells localized around the blood vessels. This tumor presents as a slowly enlarging painless mass with a clear predilection for the musculoskeletal system. The aim of this work was to introduce a peculiar case of a tongue hemangiopericytoma managed by conservative surgical treatment.

Imaging of intra- and extraabdominal desmoid tumors.

Desmoid tumors are characterized by proliferation of fibroblastic cells that arise from the fascia or aponeurosis of muscle. They are most commonly found in the abdomen of adults, arising from the anterior abdominal wall, mesentery, or retroperitoneum. At sonography, desmoids have variable echogenicity, with smooth, well-defined margins. On contrast-enhanced computed tomographic scans, the tumors are generally high attenuation (relative to muscle) and have either ill- or well-defined margins. At magnetic resonance imaging, desmoids have low signal intensity relative to muscle on T1-weighted im

Primary leiomyosarcoma of bone: a clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural study of 33 patients and a literature review.

Leiomyosarcoma of bone is a rare tumor in an unusual location. Previous analysis of this entity mostly involved small numbers of cases with limited follow-up. Thirty-three patients with leiomyosarcoma of bone between 1977 and 1996 were studied, and the histologic appearance and grade were correlated with subsequent treatment and clinical behavior. To be included in this study the tumor had to be intraosseous, with other primary sites of origin clinically excluded. Also, most of the sarcomatous tissue (> or =70%) had to be of intramedullary location with only limited extraosseous extension. The

Spatiotemporal ATF3 Expression Determines VSMC Fate in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a catastrophic disease with little effective therapy, likely due to the limited understanding of the mechanisms underlying AAA development and progression. ATF3 (activating transcription factor 3) has been increasingly recognized as a key regulator of cardiovascular diseases. However, the role of ATF3 in AAA development and progression remains elusive. METHODS: Genome-wide RNA sequencing analysis was performed on the aorta isolated from saline or Ang II (angiotensin II)-induced AAA mice, and ATF3 was identified as the potential key gene for AAA d

Thyroid perivascular epithelioid cell tumor: A rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal tumors with histological and immunophenotypic characteristics of perivascular epithelioid cells, characterized by smooth muscle and melanocytic markers. Herein, we report a case of PEComa originating in the thyroid gland. CASE PRESENTATION: A 36-year-old woman presented with a thyroid nodule detected on physical examination that gradually enlarged during a 3-year follow-up period. The patient underwent a unilateral thyroidectomy after completing the relevant preoperative investigations. Postoperative pathological

Case report: Malignant epithelioid angiosarcoma in a Chinese female patient.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are mesenchymal tumors that exhibit characteristic epithelioid or spindle cell morphology and typically grow around blood vessels. These tumors are characterized by the expression of melanocytic and smooth muscle markers, such as HMB-45, Melan-A, and smooth muscle actin, indicating a dual differentiation phenotype. PEComas are extremely rare diseases, and patients typically have a very poor prognosis. Here, we report a case of malignant cutaneous PEComa with pulmonary metastasis in a Chinese female and review relevant literature. The patient under

LEIOMYOSARCOMA OF THE COLON.

INTRODUCTION: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors of the digestive tract. Leiomyosarcomas of the gastrointestinal tract are rare mesenchymal neoplasms which grossly and histologically resemble gastrointestinal stromal tumors. They may be differentiated from gastrointestinal stromal tumors by using immunohistochemistry and they are typically positive for a smooth muscle actin and desmin and negative for c-kit, CD34 and DOG1.1. They often express calponin and h-caldesmon. CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 59-year-old male with anemia, weight loss, intermitte

Leiomyoadenomatoid tumor of the uterus: report of a rare entity and review of the literature.

Adenomatoid tumor occurs in the testicular spermatic cord and ejaculatory duct in males and in the fallopian tube and uterus in the females. These are usually small, benign lesions and are mostly incidental findings. Leiomyo-adenomatoid tumor (LMAT) is a variant of adenomatoid tumor, where in the smooth muscle component is predominant. Only nine cases of LMAT are reported so far in the English literature. We report one case and review the nine cases reported so far.

Uterine adenomyoma of endocervical type.

A uterine adenomyoma of endocervical type was presented histopathologically in a 44-year-old woman. She had a mural tumor of the uterine endocervix, which showed a well-circumscribed margin and multiple cysts filled with mucin. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a proliferation of endocervical glands and smooth muscle. The glandular epithelial components were cystic and occasionally papillary, but neither component showed cytological atypia. A differential diagnosis of the uterine endocervical tumor should include adenomyoma of endocervical type.

Adult rhabdomyoma of the lip.

A 75-year-old man presented with a slowly enlarging crust on the left lower lip. Beneath the crust, there was a palpable nodule approximately 1 cm. A superficial punch biopsy demonstrated an actinic keratosis of the lip. A vermillonectomy with a wedge-shaped excision of the nodule was performed because invasive squamous cell carcinoma was suspected. Histologically, the tumor proved to be an adult rhabdomyoma with an overlying actinic keratosis. The tumor cells were positive for desmin and muscle-specific actin and negative for vimentin, alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA), and S100 protein.

Primary leiomyosarcoma in the floor of mouth: a case report.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant soft tissue tumor that exhibits smooth muscle differentiation, and its occurrence in the oral cavity is exceedingly rare, especially in the floor of mouth. A 54-year-old male was admitted for evaluation of a painless nodular mass in the left floor of mouth with a 3-month history. With the help of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination, the patient went on a surgery excision, and by pathological and immunohistochemical findings, a diagnoses of LMS was confirmed. Then the patient went on chemotherapy, and six-month follow up

Angiomyoma in the buccal space.

Angiomyoma is a rare benign tumor originated from vascular smooth muscle cells, in other words, the tunica media, and the characteristic is the detection of numerous blood vessels together with spindle-shape smooth muscle cells. In most cases, it occurs in the subcutaneous tissue of the limbs, especially in the lower limbs, but it is very rare that it occurs in the head and neck area. In the head and neck area, it is developed most frequently in the larynx and the turbinates, and in addition, the development in the oral cavity (lip, hard palate, tonsil), nose, ear, cheek, parotid gland, and su

An orbital perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) in a 9-year-old boy: Case report and review of the literature.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of benign neoplasms characterized by smooth muscle and melanocytic differentiation. Orbital cases are rare. A 9-year-old male presented with a slowly growing orbital mass. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a well-defined orbital mass without intracranial extension. The microscopic appearance of the complete resection specimen showed large nests of epithelioid cells with wide cytoplasm containing melanin pigment and round to oval nuclei with mild cytonuclear atypia and low mitotic activity. Immunohistochemistry was positive for

Extrauterine Retroperitoneal Leiomyomas: 3 Case Reports and Review of the Literature.

Leiomyomas are benign mesenchymal tumors which originate from smooth muscle cells. Extrauterine leiomyomas are rare and they may arise where smooth muscle cells are found. Their diagnosis is challenging due to their heterogeneous ways of presentation. Histological analysis may reveal areas of sarcomatous differentiation; therefore, complete resection of the entire tumor is the only curative treatment. There is no adjuvant therapy proved to increase overall survival. It is essential to develop a standardized protocol, detailing how to follow up these patients since it is not reported in the lit

Expanding the histomorphologic spectrum of TFE3-rearranged perivascular epithelioid cell tumors.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of mesenchymal neoplasms that have smooth muscle and melanocytic differentiation. They can be sporadic or associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and commonly present in the kidney as angiomyolipoma or in the lung as pulmonary clear cell sugar tumors or lymphangioleiomyomatosis. However, they can present at any visceral or soft tissue site. They usually have a benign clinical course, but rarely can behave in a malignant fashion. Most PEComas demonstrate abnormalities of TSC2, but a recently described subset harbor TFE3 rearrangemen

Lessons from pregnancy and parturition: uterine leiomyomas result from discordant differentiation and dedifferentiation responses in smooth muscle cells.

Leiomyomas, benign smooth muscle tumors of the uterus, are the most common gynecological neoplasm in women. Studies with human tissues and primary cultures have revealed little about the development of leiomyomas, although several genes have been shown to be differentially expressed in leiomyomas compared to matched normal myometrium. We propose that uterine smooth muscle tumor cells mimic a differentiated myometrial cell of pregnancy, and are associated with a hypersensitivity to sex steroid hormones, preventing the cells from responding to normal apoptotic or dedifferentiation signals which …

Unusual ciliary body tumor. Mesectodermal leiomyoma.

A 23-year-old white woman presented with a pigmented ciliary body mass in the left eye. The tumor appeared to transilluminate when observed with indirect illumination. Clinically the tumor was considered to represent either a malignant melanoma or a cyst and was excised by iridocyclectomy. Electron microscopic examination established the smooth muscle nature of the tumor. The literature on this unusual tumor is reviewed. Furthermore, this report serves to emphasize the value of iridocyclectomy in the diagnosis and treatment of ciliary body tumors.
