[Trimeresurus albolabris (white-lipped green pit viper) - bite report: case report].

Toxicology is a specialized scientific discipline, focusing on microbiological, botanical and animal venoms, poisons and toxins. This discipline includes more than just the chemistry and mode of action of a toxin, but also with the biology of venom or poison producing organism, the structure and function of the venom apparatus, as well as the use of the venom or poison. The discipline of toxicology involves the study of the poison on living organisms and the therapy of the intoxication. A genus Trimeresurus, to which belongs Green Pit Viper, is large and includes around 36 types. Snake venoms

Field treatment of snakebites in the Israel Defense Forces.

Eight species of venomous snakes capable of inflicting bites dangerous or fatal to humans inhabit the State of Israel. Soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) routinely serve under field conditions, and are at greater risk for contact with venomous snakes than are their civilian counterparts. Every year scores of military personnel are bitten by poisonous snakes. The IDF has developed a protocol for field-level treatment of snakebite victims, which we present in this article. Employment of a number of simple therapeutic measures for early treatment of snakebite can prevent or significantly

Identification and molecular characterization of five putative toxins from the venom gland of the snake Philodryas chamissonis (Serpentes: Dipsadidae).

Philodryas chamissonis is a rear-fanged snake endemic to Chile. Its bite produces mild to moderate symptoms with proteolytic and anti-coagulant effects. Presently, the composition of the venom, as well as, the biochemical and structural characteristics of its toxins, remains unknown. In this study, we cloned and reported the first full-length sequences of five toxin-encoding genes from the venom gland of this species: Type III snake venom metalloprotease (SVMP), snake venom serine protease (SVSP), Cysteine-rich secretory protein (CRISP), α and β subunits of C-type lectin-like protein (CLP) and

Bite-to-needle Time - An Extrapolative Indicator of Repercussion in Patients with Snakebite.

BACKGROUND: Snakebite is a significant occupational and environmental hazard in tropical countries. The treatment of snakebite includes care of the wound, supportive care, and administration of anti-snake venom (ASV). Time is crucial to reducing the morbidity and mortality of patients. This study aimed to assess the "bite-to-needle time" with morbidity and mortality of snakebites and correlate it. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 100 patients were included. Detailed history included the time since snakebite, bite site, species of snake, and symptoms at presentation, which included level of co

Pets in peril: The relative susceptibility of cats and dogs to procoagulant snake venoms.

Snakebite is a common occurrence for pet cats and dogs worldwide and can be fatal. In Australia the eastern brown snake (Pseudonaja textilis) is responsible for an estimated 76% of reported snakebite cases to domestic pets nationally each year, with the primary pathology being venom-induced consumptive coagulopathy. While only 31% of dogs survive P. textilis bites without antivenom, cats are twice as likely to survive bites (66%). Even with antivenom treatment, cats have a significantly higher survival rate. The reason behind this disparity is unclear. Using a coagulation analyser (Stago STA R

Broad-Spectrum Detoxification of Snake Venoms With Supramolecular Materials Integrated via Molecular Recognition and Coassembly.

Snakebite is a medical emergency that often leads to high mortality and morbidity in tropical and subtropical regions. The diversity in venom composition between various types of snakes necessitates the use of different specific antivenom treatments, which presents clinical and financial challenges in the management of snakebites. Therefore, developing a broad-spectrum antidote to neutralize complex and diverse snake venoms has assumed critical importance. Herein, a broad-spectrum antidote is developed through molecular recognition and coassembly to neutralize four kinds of snake venom toxins,

Harm due to the use of pressure bandage immobilisation in patients bitten by snakes in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Pressure bandage immobilisation has remained the recommended first aid treatment for more than 40 years in Australia. However, whilst it is used in most people bitten by a snake, it is often applied poorly, and patients have been envenomed despite good pressure bandage immobilisation. We report two patients who suffered harm from this procedure. CASE REPORTS: Two men, a 35-year-old and a 44-year-old, were bitten by snakes. Both had a prompt application of pressure bandage immobilisation, and both reported significant pain requiring opioid analgesia whilst being transferred from re

Artificial intelligence-based snakebite identification using snake images, snakebite wound images, and other modalities of information: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Artificial intelligence (AI) is widely applied in medical decision support systems. AI also plays an essential role in snakebite identification (SI). To date, no review has been conducted on AI-based SI. This work aims to identify, compare, and summarize the state-of-the-art AI methods in SI. Another objective is to analyze these methods and propose solutions for future directions. METHODS: Searches were performed in PubMed, Web of Science, Engineering Village, and IEEE Xplore to identify the SI studies. The datasets, preprocessing, feature extraction, and classifica

Effect of the snake venom component crotamine on lymphatic endothelial cell responses and lymph transport.

OBJECTIVE: The pathology of snake envenomation is closely tied to the severity of edema in the tissue surrounding the area of the bite. Elucidating the mechanisms that promote the development of such severe edema is critical to a better understanding of how to treat this life-threatening injury. We focused on one of the most abundant venom components in North American viper venom, crotamine, and the effects it has on the cells and function of the lymphatic system. METHODS: We used RT-PCR to identify the location and relative abundance of crotamine's cellular targets (Kvα channels) within the

The Clinical Usefulness of Taiwan Bivalent Freeze-Dried Hemorrhagic Antivenom in Protobothrops mucrosquamatus- and Viridovipera stejnegeri-Envenomed Patients.

Snakebites from Protobothrops mucrosquamatus (Taiwan habus) and Viridovipera stejnegeri (green bamboo vipers) account for the most venomous snakebites in Taiwan. The bivalent freeze-dried hemorrhagic (FH) antivenom is employed to treat these two snakebite patients without a strict clinical trial. We evaluated the clinical usefulness of Taiwan bivalent freeze-dried hemorrhagic (FH) antivenom in Taiwan habu- and green bamboo viper-envenomed patients. We checked ELISA- based serum venom antigen levels before and after FH antivenom to evaluate FH's ability to neutralize patients' serum snake venom

Illegal online pet trade in venomous snakes and the occurrence of snakebites in Brazil.

Greater access to the Internet has boosted the online pet trade and especially enabled the trade in niche-targeted groups, such as venomous species. Despite their fearsome reputation, an array of venomous animals, such as snakes, spiders and scorpions arise interest among pet hobbyists, which exposes owners, sellers, and others involved in their transport and maintenance to potentially serious accidents by envenomation. To assess the potential risk to human health posed by the trade and ownership of venomous pet snakes, we examined social media posts trading or portraying native and exotic ven

A Tropical Kiss by a Malabar Pit Viper.

Snakebite in India is often attributed to the "big 4," for which polyvalent anti-snake venom is effective. Also significant and less known is the burden of other venomous snakes, one of which is Trimeresurus malabaricus. We report a bite to the face of a tree climber by Trimeresurus malabaricus in the Western Ghats of India, which caused severe local envenomation in the form of facial edema and systemic signs of envenomation, including coagulopathy and hypotension. We discuss the role of thromboelastogram, infrared thermography, and routine diagnostics in this case, which led to the administra

Philodryas (Serpentes: Dipsadidae) Envenomation, a Neglected Issue in Chile.

Snakebite envenomation is considered a neglected tropical disease, although it also occurs outside the tropics. In this work, we analyzed the literature on Philodryas species in Chile (Philodryaschamissonis, P.simonsii, and P.tachymenoides) from 1834 to 2019, searching for epidemiological, clinical, and molecular aspects of envenomation. Ninety-one percent of the studies found regarded taxonomy, ecology, and natural history, suggesting that snakebites and venom toxins are a neglected issue in Chile. All snakebite cases reported and toxicological studies concerned the species Philodryaschamisso

Tissue pathology induced by snake venoms: how to understand a complex pattern of alterations from a systems biology perspective?

The study of snake venom-induced local tissue pathology has been predominantly based on experimental designs and concepts that view tissue alterations from a dichotomous, homogeneous and reductionist perspective. Experimental observations, however, indicate that cells and extracellular matrix are affected by venoms and toxins in a complex and heterogeneous fashion, and that the effect of whole venoms in whole organisms cannot be properly assessed by studying only the action of isolated toxins in isolated systems. It is proposed that a novel conceptual and methodological frame is necessary to b

Clinical aspects of bites by viper in Spain.

Poisonings due to Viperidae bites are quite common in our country. There is a mortality of 3 to 7 cases out of 35 million inhabitants and a variable morbidity which increases in some years. From 1965 to 1980, about 125 cases of bites by Vipers latasti, 80 by V. aspis and 23 by V. seoanei received treatment. Fifty per cent of the cases received small doses of venom and presented proteolytic and coagulant reactions. With stronger doses the reactions were anticoagulant and hemolytic. Two cases affected by bites of V. aspis developed a neurotoxic syndrome with ptosis, dysphagia, dysphasia and para
